  1. If correct, the fact that it was pre-planned makes it even more disgusting.
  2. So, if he is really that inactive, why is he continueing to be placed on the charter every year. At the end of the year, inform him and his parents, that unless his attendance improves, he will be dropped from the charter, since he is bascially a non-active, non-participating scout.
  3. Had a boy in my troop awarded the Medal of Merit after he did the same thing to his younger brother. My son (an older scout) taught him the Heimlich manuver.
  4. Wow, I feel your pain. I've had a few parents like that over the years. Sure takes away from some of the fun of being a scout leader.
  5. Wow, I thought I had too many uniforms. I have hardly any compared to some of the folks out there.
  6. Someone posted earlier that BSA uniforms are guaranteed. Suppossedly, if the patch falls off, you can return the shirt for a replacement. If enough people do this, and they have to replace enough shirts, maybe they'll get the message and stop trying to sell cheap pieces of junk.
  7. Yup, they even have said that we can mix and match the old and new as we wear out parts of the uniform.
  8. There are different devices to designate different phases of the program. There are several knots that can be earned in more than one phase. The device is worn on the knot to designate what phase the knot was earned in.
  9. Definately cherry. With vanilla ice cream on top.
  10. Had a situation like this several years ago when I was the district advancement chairman. The Scoutmaster of a scout refused to sign the scoutmaster conference and the Eagle application. The national advancement policy states that the Eagle BOR can be convened anyway. We still did the BOR, tried to get some input from the scoutmaster as to his reasons for the refusal. He declined to do so, so we reviewed the scout and passed him.
  11. Sounds like a great idea, if you can avoid the legal hassles, which it sounds like you have. Good luck.
  12. Most of the crews in my area do some outdoor acivities, and participate in the councils venturing program, where the youth spend part of the day competing in scout-like activities, and then have a co-ed dance in the evening.
  13. Good story. Thanks for sharing.
  14. Good message. Thanks for sharing.
  15. That would be nice. I have yet to meet a unit that really wants to have a unit commissioner. My last unit would invite me to a meeting, change the time and place of the meeting, and then forget to inform me. So I would show up, and be the only one there.

  17. Sounds like a really great experience. Thanks for sharing.
  18. How heartbreaking. It is great that you are doing that for his family.
  19. I agree with alot of the points already made. The election process makes it too easy to get in. It is often a big "click" with the good old boys getting all the lodge positions, being considered for Vigil, etc. Plus, the ordeal is not held at summer camp, pulling the OA out of public view. The ceremonies in my opinion have gotten very lame also. Just my 2 cents worth.
  20. A bunch of great ideas. In the past I have seen troops that I was personally associated with give things like red shoulder loops (not the butt ugly green ones we have now), handbook, neckerchief. We would give out troop information from the time they started Webelos 2, so that they and their parents would be familiar with what was going on in the troop.
  21. Trousers: Boy Scout Long Pants Boy Scout Shorts Venturing Long Pants Venturing Shorts Shirts: 3 Boy Scout Short Sleeve 1 for UC 2 for ASM 2 Boy Scout Long Sleeve 1 for UC 1 for ASM 2 Venturing short sleeve 1 for UC 1 for Venture Crew Committee member
  22. Sure it's possible. Have a great time and go for it.
  23. Ed hit the nail right on the head. If a boy isn't joining boy scouting, what is the point of a bridging ceremony. What does he do when he cross the bridge? As "Ask Andy" so rightly put it, "the bridge to nowhere".
  24. Heard the other day that my council has filled one troop, and is starting on a second. They will be recruiting for applicants for the adult leader positions shortly.
