  1. how about "the Scouting organization formally known as Boy Scouts" or Scouting The Fun Units - better known by it's initials when in communications with the Girl Scouts USA

  2. Well, this is America where sue is more often a verb than a name. To be fair, you know what they say, 99% of lawyers give the rest a bad name.

  4. I'd prefer Scouting BSA over Scouts BSA. It implies we're doing something rather than just being there. In the meantime, I went with a patrol last night that helped out at a local homeless charity. It was great watching them. At one point I just asked the PL if he could get his patrol organized and a minute later they had it all figured out. I'm really impressed with this PL. He's 13. They had fun. I put a bug in their ear about helping this charity once a quarter and making this their thing. It was a good night to be a scouter.

  7. Congratulations to Zach on his Iowa state senate win. Regardless of what anyone thinks of his politics, it's great to see an Eagle Scout rising in public service.

  8. I agree with everything you said. But, the GSUSA has competition now. I'm waiting for those few scouter.com members (they know who they are) to accuse the GSUSA of promoting a sexist, bigoted, good-ol-girls program. After all, girls and boys are wired the same. What's the deal? Barry

  9. I would be utterly shocked if GSUSA were willing to change their name to Girl Guides. The name "Girl Guides" or "Guides" has, in my experience, very very little name recognition in the U.S. Our young Girl Scouts always seem surprised to learn that Girl Scouts in other countries are called "Guides". If GSUSA is worried about confusion over names with both GSUSA and BSA applying the word "scouts" to girls in this country, then they would be even more concerned about the name-recognition suicide that would be the result of changing their name to "Guides".

  10. Yes, I met some scouts from France a couple of years back, I don't know what branch they were in officially, they self described themselves as "we're like the hippy scouts of France", I think they were non-denominational. Lovely bunch. I guess in France if there isn't a branch that fits what you think scouting should be, you start a new organisation, and all the others just give a gallic shrug. Suing other organisations seems like a much more sensible use of funds than using it to improve your own offering [eye roll]. But them I'm British, so I probably just don't understand, I'd p

  11. Have not seen any confusion. One group sells cookies, the other does not. Hmmm maybe that is it - some rumor that Scouts BSA will sell Scout Cookies - Slim Mints, Do-or-Don't, Trailalongs, Gilwell Grins...

  12. I think some of the issue is local leaders and councils being “innovative”. See below for an image used in the lawsuit.... clearly not from Nationals as their online forms crash too quickly to take screenshots.

  13. BSA has used "Scouts" and "Scouting" since 1913. A tad late to sue over merely using those words. This is the last gasp of a zombie organization. Scouting BSA cookies! _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Win the culture war and leave only devastation. "Free stuff"

  16. I concur. On a side note, perhaps I will break out the old 70's 'Scout BSA' uniform for Roundtable this month; and yes, it will include my much maligned red beret!

  19. From a thread in the /BSA Sub Reddit: The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has 41 live records for the term "Scouting." Of these 41 live trademark/patient registrations, 13 are owned by the BSA including the following: NORTHERN STAR SCOUTING, FRIENDS OF SCOUTING, LIVE SCOUTING'S ADVENTURE NATIONAL JAMBOREE SBR 2017, LIVE SCOUTING'S ADVENTURE, SCOUTING WORKS, THIS IS SCOUTING, MY.SCOUTING, SCOUTINGU, SCOUTING FOR ADVENTURE, SCOUTING FOR FOOD, NATIONAL SCOUTING MUSEUM, NATIONAL CATHOLIC COMMITTEE ON SCOUTING, and SCOUTING. 0 "Scouting" are owned by the GSUSA.

  21. Yeah, but clearly ageist and sexist saracam! Why should strong independent women and children have to hide? You are clearly part of the patriarchical power hierarchy that must be destroyed!

  22. The only way the BSA could play this game to win was not to play. Prior to allowing girls the BSA was emblematic of the male power hierarchy of society oppressing girls. Now that BSA is allowing girls, the BSA is clearly exploiting them to oppress the the gender specific GSUSA. If the GSUSA loses this fight it will be something else. Harvard chased down this rabbit hole two years ago when they banned single-gender organizations, then backtracked to allow female single-gendered organizations as long as they were gender focused. That's the same basic zeitgeist the BSA is facing.

  25. Yes, people are confused that both organizations exist and are separate. I have been surprised at the number of people who truly did not know that the 2 organizations were not the same. And even more so to find out that they are not finally joining into one organization.

  26. Scouts BSA sounds cool but I would have switched it to “BSA Scouts”. It rolls off the tongue better. Guess we’ll see how National responds to this. Saddest part is that there are people out there that actually think that the two organizations are interchangeable/the same. BTW, what’s wrong with red loops? As long as it’s on the correct uniform (de la Renta shirt) it’s still official.

  27. All the issues GSUSA listed are prior to use of Scouts BSA. They know they can’t sue to block BSA from accepting girls so this is what they are left with. Will be interesting to see BSA’s response.

  28. Oh, the times they are a-changing (or changed...) Waaaay back when I was about 7 or 8 years of age, my grand dad died, and mom and pop and I made the trip up to Boston to make the arrangements. After they settled us in the motel, they talked to me and decided after the "viewing", I did not have to tag along with them as they made all the other arrangements, so they wrote down everything, made sure I knew where they would be, made sure I knew where the motel was, gave me a key(!) and set me in a taxi with money for the fare both ways, and sent me off to a museum. That's how much they t

  30. And the plural of "y'all" is "all y'all". I would agree with @KarenZ that AAC has always been a powerhouse and one of the largest councils. That's where I started Scouting in 3rd grade as a Bear in Norcross, GA.

  31. Worst? How about Best ! True story.... Cub Scout Day Camp: 200 plus Cubs. Last day, water festival day. 85degrees, sunny. No Scout Program to speak of (unless you count the slip'n slide rescue rope pull). I am serving as "First Assistant Everything Else" after being Archery Range SO (wife was the CSDC Director ). Even if there is an official activities rotation (bugle every hour), Cubs are running around, getting wet, sliding on the slides, climbing on the hay bales, throwing wet sponges at targets, etc. Woman comes up to me (I am an identified "person in authority") and waves

  32. While the "G.I.R.L." advertising push is relatively new, the girls-can-do-anything-including-in-fields-previously-offlimits-to-females emphasis of GSUSA has been around for a long time -- I can remember it going back to at least the 1980's. The ironic thing now is that their message now seems to be that it is great for girls to aspire to anything they desire, except joining the Boy Scouts.
