  1. Only boys are allowed to bull's-eye womp-rats in their T-16's around here. Sir, the possibility of successfully navigating this thread is approximately 3,720 to 1. Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did Obi-Wan's apprentice.

  2. Perhaps the national press releases should have been delayed until they have an idea of how it was to be implemented. I just read this thread and learned a whole lot more than what has been communicated to the Scouters by my Council. I have had extensive training in the field of "Risk Communication"...BSA National and local Council Executives need a crash course. In a nutshell...1) identify your stakeholders, 2) communicate early and often, 3) tell the truth, 4) if you don't know, say you don't know., 5) get out ahead of the rumors and quash them.

  3. I don't think you should override the youth decision in this case without actual evidence, either from her prior behavior or their prior judgement that the decision is necessarily a poor one. I would probably watch a little more closely and check in with her patrol mates a little more directly as to her performance, but you don't have reason to do more than that. As to her leading the patrol on an overnight, who else is in her patrol? Is she leading a patrol full of other 11 year olds? If she wasn't the PL would the make-up of the patrol change significantly. It may be true that

  4. Yeah, was a big Star Wars fan all my life, but I am just done with it, it is just not fun anymore. The girls and feminists can have it. There is no point complaining or getting upset about it, I am powerless to do anything about it. The people in charge are not listening, they have their own agenda that I am not a part of. So it is best that I just walk away and find something that I can enjoy, that will be a better use of my time.

  5. Would you give Eagle to a Trails Life scout who decided he wanted Eagle instead of whatever award it is they give out? Let's just be honest. Mrs. Ireland has not done the work, because she's not eligible to do the work. I can't study advanced coursework and then go to the local university and demand my masters degree, because I "did the work." I have to follow the requirements as the university lays them out if I want their degree. Unfortunately there are no procedures in place for a situation like this, because Mrs. Ireland is the first who's the challenged the situation in this way. Th

  6. I think one fear traditionalists have is National will treat lasses differently than the lads. Take heart! This is proof that National Supply can provide ugly and poorly functional items for ALL scouts. But after spending a lot of time around the same school-age girls around here at least they are not spandex bike shorts with a pink "Scouts" across the backside. Skorts seem to have some modesty to them. I pray that National will have the fortitude in 2019 to forsake scout yoga pants with "You Go Girl" on the posterior. GSUSA would fume about that!

  7. Exactly. I remember a graduate course I took on communication. It showed the video of the CEO of an oil refinery taking a horrible beating in a press conference after his refinery polluted the local water supply. It was ugly. But, the guy stood up there, took the questions and did his best. That's leadership. And was used as an example of how to get in front of challenges. I agree with your points. Communicate early and often. Tell the truth. Get out ahead of rumors. ... It's human nature that people are going to debate, discuss and plan. BSA was poorly prepared. Three month

  8. Yes, it's how we stop the sky cows from escaping. Handy tip: When camping in Britain, always check you aren't in a field under a herd of sky cows, they can make a right mess if they "pat" your tent.

  10. You're twisting GTA 5.0.4.0 beyond its intent. We are to never accept work from a Canadian resident member of Scouts Canada. The guide is clear on the intended beneficiary: Youth from other countries who temporarily reside in the United States, or have moved here ... That wording precludes youth who never resided in the US, youth who permanently resided in the US, and youth who mostly reside in the US but temporarily (using the loosest possible definition of the term) leave the US to participate in another scout program. Moreover, it sets bounds on which ranks may be rewarded

  17. But a movie that is both good and please the fans has the best 'legs' and will over time bring in a lot of money. While there are folks in the entertainment industry to who are trying to promote their art as much as their livelihoods the people who back them are in the business to make money. So that is a potential self correcting feature. Of course the Star Wars franchise is its own pocket universe now with multiple income streams from merchandise, secondary media spin-offs (books, background films, cartoons), and theme parks so that as long as a new film supports that it may matter less if i

  18. We often have the new scout patrol choose their PL from among their ranks, so that boy could be around 11 or 12 years of age. BSA no longer lets members hike or camp independently with their mates, so official solo camps are off the table. But, this is Western Pennsylvania, so keeping some clusters of boys (and, sometimes, their girlfriends) from soloing would be like keeping the wind from blowing. Those clusters, however, tend to be older. So, your instincts about pushing a young PL too hard in that direction are probably sound. The ground truth: most of us are only as good as our assist

  19. As Tahawk says, the patrol system runs a bit differently here. Ultimate call does rest with the SL albeit they give as much responsibility to the scouts as possible. The view of the forum is simply to get some outside opinion. In any walk of life it's sometimes easy to miss something that you may wish to consider when only seeing things from the inside. Getting an external view can be very helpful!

  21. "Why is it important that the forum give feedback on this issue.[?]" Because the UK does not follow Bill's Patrol Method, as Leader (BP's "Officer") he has the power to name the PLs or define their powers, and he wants some input. Cambridgeskip, girls are often more mature than boys. She could have a test run with a adult within scream and you could go from there. There are always questions - even role-plying - to test how she would handle "issues."

  23. I wasn’t talking about a poll. I was giving my perception of how members of this forum feel about the subject based on the many posts on the subject. And I’m not talking about the number of posts, I’m talking about the number of people. I’m not claiming it’s a scientific approach. It’s just based on my observations. My conclusion from those observations is that there has been a mixed reaction.

  25. One also has to consider the issue of YPT training this girl may not have taken, the insurance that she isn't under and the consequences of anything she may do in that role. Like my mother used to say, it's all fun and games until someone gets hurt.

  27. Yeah, I remember that poll on this site...again though, let's be honest, the idea of girls in the Boy Scouts has not been well received. For my one vote, I'm an Eagle and I think girls in Boy Scouts is absurd. Complacency is a big problem, IMHO, among scouters in the BSA. All too often, they're willing to just look the other way or do nothing. When people sit by and let the special interest proponents do whatever they want, we end up with girls in the Boy Scouts...

  28. I have found the Scouts know who is better to do the job than us old fogeys. My son was 10 when he was a PL. Ok it was a New Scout Patrol with other 10 and 11 year olds with an older Scout as Guide, but he was in charge, and in all honesty the Guide didn't do much. At the end of his term of office, he was nominated for, and elected by the troop. Senior Patrol Leader. He was 11 years, 2 months old when elected. You trained your Scouts. You need to trust your Scouts. NOW LET THEM LEAD! to paraphrase Green Bar Bill.

  29. It's funny how many people want to claim that "real" Star Wars fans hated the film, yet no matter how much they pout, the numbers clearly show that the VAST majority of people loved it. I can easily claim to be one of the biggest Star Wars fans on this forum; no far I haven't seen anybody here who can even approach the devotion and love I have for the films (look into my costume and memorabilia collection if you have any doubts). But I will say this - The Last Jedi is an artful, beautiful movie, powerful in its messages, heart-breaking in its action, and deeply moving in its implic

  30. Why is it important that the forum give feedback on this issue. Shouldn't the patrol members be the one's to give the yea or nay? After the past 10 years of having the boys in the patrol pick their own leaders, the problems have been reduced to near zero. Occasionally a PL will not uphold his responsibilities and get replaced, but for the most part when the boys pick their leadership, they really can't complain down the road. As far as the gal's age, it shouldn't be a big problem. I have had a lot of new scout patrols that have not selected an older scout to be their leader and have

  31. I wonder the same thing. In this forum it has been somewhere in the vicinity of 50-50, or perhaps a better guess would be something like 40% opposed, 35% in favor and 25% not sure/waiting-and-watching/no opinion. Or the 40/35 could be the other way. Among the Scouters I know in person, the most common reaction is a shrug of the shoulders as if to say, It is what it is. I attended a portion of a Cub Scout RT session where this was being discussed and most of the leaders seemed to have gotten past the yes-or-no stage and were mainly interested in getting more information about what they were

  34. A couple of our explorer scouts (14-18 year olds) have just got back from the Advanced Mountaineering Course run by our neighbouring scout county in the Scottish Highlands over new year. Piccies here! Our mountains aren't quite the Rockies but as you can see they certainly found themselves in a winter wonderland. I'm quite jealous! I'd have tagged along (adults can do the course as well) if I hadn't been on the grand tour of the family over Christmas and New Year.

  35. Change nothing about the name. The girls that are Brave will join without any concerns over the name and those that don't because of the name -- then maybe BSA isn't for them after all. My daughter wants to be, and I want her to be, a Boy Scout. Hawkwin Who is trying to raise a future girl Ranger, or future girl POTUS, or a future girl CEO, or a future girl fighter pilot, or a girl scientist, or a future girl astronaut... And a future Boy Scout.

  36. If the "journalist" who wrote this article really wanted to get a good story, she would be asking more questions and getting to the real root of the problem here. Why are the parents in this unit okay with allowing a 16 year-old to run Cub Scout activities? Why is there no legal adult supervising their children? How did she get past National's strict age qualifications for Den Leader - did she lie on her application? Or did she even turn one in? Is she merely a Den Chief posing as a Den Leader? Does anybody in her unit even know the difference, or care? Is her council beding the rules simply

  37. Update Jan 4, 2018 The report on an electrocution that killed three East Texas boy scouts will NOT be released. According to the Texas Attorney General's Office, they have ruled not to release the report on the boating accident at Lake O’ the Pines, which killed scouts Heath Faucheux, 17, Thomas Larry, 11, and Will Brannon, 17. The scouts were fatally injured last August when their sailboat came into contact with power lines on the lake. http://www.kltv.com/story/37195916/texas-attorney-general-office-report-on-fatal-boy-scouts-boating-accident-will-not-be-released
