  1. Our troop solved the phyiscal issue years ago by using the local pediatrician to do all our annual physicals. We schedule a saturday morning with him, we have a couple of EMT's/RN's in the parents to assist with paperwork, weights, and that stuff and he gives the boys the once over. This MD does all the school physicals for sports and other activities plus he is the doctor that 80-90% of the boys see anyway. Takes a couple of hours at the most and there all done. We started doing this with him in 2001 for the NSJ and been doing it ever since, works good for both of us. We feed him cob
  2. "And if these youth are guilty, they should just accept the consequences for what they did." In the old days we would have fessed up if we had done a dumb thing like this, in this day and age, that is not a smart thing to do. The 3 teenagers involved could have the rest of thier life marked by this. I have seen to many youth marked for life when a parent could have handled the issue, but they usually abrogated thier parental rights by not teaching thier children the difference between right and wrong. This week alone, I get to see 4 youths in court aged 16-19 for various stup
  3. If you read the police reports very carefully, you will notice a few things that differ from the news story. 1. They didn't duct tape him up, just a piece of tape on his mouth. 2. The youth that asked him to accompany him to the camp was not one of the 4 charged, infact is only briefly listed in the report. 3. There is no mention of cell phone pictures, the report does not mention it, only pictures the deputies took. Other than the 21 yr old, the camp staff here committed several errors which are going to cause the DA a ton of problems trying to prosecute this. It
  4. I would go for either waterboarding of a cattle prod to get to the bottom of this.
  5. Maybe I am in the minority here, but if Amy is not comfortable with more than 8, then that is all she should have to take. Why should the CM be allowed to force a DL to take more cubs then they are willing to work with. Whats the consequences, we lose a den of 8, because the leader is unhappy. No one should force you into doing something that makes you uncomfortable, If you can be force to take 2, what happens when there are 2 more after that, do you have to take 1 more, then 1 more. When does it end. Amy, put your foot down and say "NO"
  6. I am not sure about where you are, but to get mud here in NY all you need is a little rain and a couple of scouts
  7. Like I said, until people quit trying to trivialize DUI/DWI, this is going to be an ongoing problem. Its a crime pure and simple, deal with it like any other crime. If you don't think its that serious, join me some saturday morning at 2am, doing an arraignment on a drunk who has either injured or killed someone while driving drunk. Explain to me then after reading all the accident reports, hospital papers and charge sheets how its not that bad. Sorry for the rant, getting off my soapbox now.
  8. speaking as a scouter and as a Judge, I will tell you this was not his first time, not if he got 120 days in Jail. If this man had been arrested for burglary, or assault, you wouldn't be having this discussion, he would have been gone already. When people wake up and realize DUI/DWI is a crime, not some minor traffic offense, maybe people will treat it with the seriousness that it deserves. You drink, you drive, your a criminal. If your a criminal you don't deserve to be a leader.
  9. The value is what ever you can talk some patch collector into paying. If you pay the postage, I will take it for free and won't charge you.
  10. Could it be that these 2 parents are using this excuse as a smoke screen for other reasons, like $$, or internal problems in the family?
  11. While I know FOS is a necessary evil in scouting, and I do my part every year, I thank god I am not allowed to have anything to do with it other than donate.
  12. Sometimes the Youth members are smarter than us adults. They see things that we may not see or overlook and the youth consider a black mark when it comes to things like OA or Troop elections.
  13. There is no council where they have mandated training that its working properly. When ours tried it a couple years ago they found out that they would have to lose 40% of the units. NO council is gong to do that. So for those that are untrained they just waive it for that year, hoping they fix it before recharter, then waive it again and again. Unless a council is prepared to take a big hit on membership, its not going to work. If your in one of the few councils that are trying to mandate training, ask how many waivers were granted in your council
  14. Schattenmann I think its you that have forgotten the 12. Perhaps you should run through them in your mind with special emphasis on Trustworthy and Loyal. To be blunt, if I was the SM and you tried this, one of us would be gone and I bet it wouldn't be me.
  15. So what do you suppose would happen if you took a donation? wiuld they diband the unit? NOPE! Would they say don't do it again? Maybe But there isn't a whole lot they can do to you for taking an offered donation. We have a local company that sends out checks to local youth groups every year. We have been getting a $250 check for years, but if council asks for an FOS donation, the answer is "Sorry we only give to local groups".
  16. One of our neighboring troops sent one to NE region and got it back in 10 days
  17. artjrk, The true answer lies not in some grey area BSA rule, but the property laws of the state that you are located in.
  18. I guess I must be old fashioned as I don't have a debit card, I use mainly cash except for buying gas or groceries. On the average I have $300 to 500 in cash in my pocket all the time. Also, in my court we don't take personnel checks, or credit/debit cards. Cash or Money orders/bank check is all we take when you pay your fines.
  19. My answer is if this is an individual thing, not a troop as a whole, sign him up if he wants to go. Pay the money, why even ask the CC. What is she going to do tell council to refund the money, they would laugh at her. Can you see a council camp turning down willing paying scouts? I think not. Just ignore her. On another note, I wouldn't have sent my son as I think these kind of MB's should be done 1 on 1 with an experianced counselor, not in a camp setting
  20. Then the answer is disenroll him immediatly, that ends his time, and also I would speak to the CE and tell his exactly what is going on. They had no authority doing this as you never turned the scout down, thats the only way he can appeal, and since you didn't deny him anything according to your emails, there is no basis for appeal. I would be darned if I would take crap like this. This man, his son, the DE and the council folks would quickly be personna non-grata at my troop.
  21. Mr.Maynard, Your answer to council advancement, the DE and anyone else should have been a simple, I am the SM, the SMC and BOR will be at the troop level, and until someone removes me from being SM, BUTT OUT. I would never have wrote a 3 page letter. I may have gone there in person and ask them by what authority they are questioning me.
  22. I didn't have a question at all, especially since your stating your the expert with all the answers. But I note your "Opinion" on if hatchets shout be allowed. Thanks for the "Opinion", but its not the right answer.
  23. What you do is get a cell phone Jammer, then no ones cell phone works for about 100 ft around you
  24. There is no formal way, Just simply have the CC and the SM tell them they are no longer welcome. Its not hard to do. Then send a note to Council asking they be remved from your troop charter. Thats the end of it. What possible repercussions is there? NONE! They have no recourse.
