    • @Jameson76, thanks for the real-world perspective, the math that units are working through now is sobering.   I agree, it's scramble time for National.   Their unapologetic silence speaks volumes.
    • I agree with this.   I think they sent out the most recent one to test the waters before this rate increase hits.   I wonder if we will see another one afterwards or at the beginning of the year? These are the 3 areas I said could use improvement and my responses.  I saw it as an opportunity for a couple rants.  :
    • We are supposed to recharter around the first weekend of November.  Concern is we will not know the fee until maybe a week prior.  I know they have said we will hear something about 10/23, but that is the earliest.  Our unit has about 100 Scouts and Leaders.  Currently that is maybe $3,300 for recharter.  If the fee goes to (and this is worst case) $100 per Scout (*Hey - still a bargain!!) we will need to somehow come up with another $6,700.  Many families may decide not to continue.  Will take a minute to sort all of this out and determine a path forward. Not good planning at all.  Between the UNKNOWN FEE and the REVISED BACKGROUND CHECK FORM and the DEPARTURE OF THE LDS UNITS my assumption is that CSE Surbaugh's Bonus and those of the National Staff is clearly tied to how many leave the program 2019 to 2020
    • At our pack meeting last night, several parents started talking that they don’t want to bail out the BSA from their past sins (sex abuse).  The discussion came up as I had to stop parents paying registration fees until we hear from National BSA.
It will be a tough message if they see a large fee increase tied to anything related to creating a victims fund.  I mentioned insurance and they scoffed.  A couple parents told me their sons play football and they sign waivers as the football teams no longer have insurance for head or neck injuries.  I mentioned health insurance and they pushed back saying they have their own health insurance and don’t need it from BSA.
These parents can afford it (median income in my area is 6 figures) but they don’t like the idea of paying for overhead or items they don’t see any benefit.  For example, many paid $100 for an outing we went on with no pushback, but they would be upset to be charged $25 in additional fees if they don’t see a value in return.
    • The advantage of sheet over a liner is sleeping on the top of the bag when it's hot. Liners are to confining. And as you stated, sheets make a 30 degree bag into a 25 degree, or even more with the right choice of a Walmart liner. And not just winter, it is an early summer advantage in the Rockies where the common temps are still in the 30s.  Barry
