  1. One of our council camps is offering two LDS sessions. These would be de facto boy only. The council will provide dining facility staff and some senior staff members, the troops will have to find their own MBCs and plan their own programs. I haven't heard of any takers. We'll be doing our own summer camp.
  2. I don't see the need for an intermediate step either. Did anyone from this generation of leaders start with a plastic knife when they were cub scouts?
  3. What used to require four perceived infractions in the eyes of an overzealous power-tripping camp counselor can now be accomplished in one perceived infraction. Progress!
  4. Have you tried holding a separate race for parents? That takes a lot of the "dad won't even let me touch the car" pressure off.
  5. Trying to help someone with it right now. The site is crawling.
  6. That's probably not a matter of instructional training, it's scout leaders that don't see it as harmful even after being told that BSA defines it as hazing. Perhaps the trainer needs to spend a little more time on persuading why it's bad. I myself could use a little more training on why you shouldn't physically fight a bully. I'm curious. What does your district do for round table?
  7. I would entirely agree with this article if "acting aggressive" and encouraging stoicism weren't lumped in with pornography, catcalling, and sexual assault.
  8. Are you not describing round table? (Also University of Scouting, but UoS can be hit or miss depending on the instructor or starting level of the audience).
  9. I think it depends on your Council. I called my registrar last week for verification and was told that everyone has to take YPT (with exception of the EO) or they'll be dropped.
  10. I've wondered about this before (especially when I serve as a UoS instructor and they want me to pay $5 for a poorly made necker). Is it literally true?
  11. The programs of the past and present have been tailored to the needs and interests of each gender. This new program will probably be no different. Sometimes themes will be the same, but the implementations are different.
  12. There's probably going to be a lot more of these storms as BSA moves in this new "market" with parents that have no previous Scouting experience. This was interesting... and frightening.
  13. Is that even possible? I thought councils were regional monopolies.
  14. That BSA is a government program or directly funded by tax dollars (which can be true in some ways, I suppose). And that “religion has no place in scouts.”
  15. One complete centennial tan uniform for my person. Another ripped and threadbare one in my bag of rags for wood finishing (I think there were some quality control issues when they first came out). One old Oscar de la Renta shirt in the closet for memory's sake. At one time I had a pile of uniforms gleaned from thrift stores but they've all been given away now. And who-knows-how-many Class Bs.
  16. I finally received a response to my email. I didn't get the same answer as @scotteg83. Nor did I get a clarification. Instead, she threw something entirely new out there. I'm just going to assume they don't really know the answer. My email: The response:
  17. If we aren’t supposed to eat animals, then why are they made out of meat?
  18. Second on this one. The father can be present but make the conversation between you and the scout. You're in an LDS troop, that 17-year-old Scout is probably going to be cooking all of his meals for himself in a year. You're not helping him if you cheat on the requirements.

  20. My council camp has started giving us a form with everyone compressed onto a few pages in line item format. It's rather annoying. It would be nice for the boys to retain some token they could use to prove their accomplishment if the troop's records were ever in question.
  21. I'll admit that we fall short on the patrol method when it comes to cooking. The boys pick whatever they want to eat (and I do mean whatever) and I guide them in making it until they can do it on their own. Otherwise, they would be eating hot dogs and lukewarm chili out of the can. Do your boys not ask you how you made this dish or that dish? Are they hiking the entire time or do you backpack to a location and stay for a day? Do they have quality backpacking gear?
