  1. Once, me and my Mormon friends were driving down the street in my Suburban and I said "Hey Mormon, pass the Jell-O salad," And he said "Not 'til we get to the ward activity, Mormon." And I say "Mormon please." and he's like "Mormon whaaaaaaat?" One time, this black guy comes up to me and he's like "My Mormon." and I was like "Actually, you can't call me a Mormon. Only we can call each other Mormons. You can say LDS, but not Mormon."
  2. 1. Obviously feelings will vary from individual to individual but I don't see anyone being ostracized for continuing with Scouting. It will become just another activity that some people do, like 4H, FFA, or club sports. There are many LDS women that work outside the home. Not having to do so is the ideal but being self-sufficient is more important. I've known many women that work and were still asked to be Relief Society Presidents [women's pastors] and Primary Presidents [children's pastors]. 2. What do you mean Scouting isn't free?! 3. Are there no other churches or schools serving as COs in your area? Hopefully someone will step up.
  3. It's not so much a change in name as it is an effort to re-emphasize that Jesus Christ is the center of the Church. Mormons gonna morm.
  4. Don't sweat it. There's talk in my district of starting a troop in 2020. With over 100 LDS troops to draw from, I would assume they'll find enough adults to staff it. We haven't yet seen what the new Church program will look like but I imagine the boys will still get their fill of camping, hiking, shooting, climbing/rappelling, service, STEM, etc. That will probably have a significant effect on the amount of LDS youth interested in BSA. No one in my troop has said anything about continuing after 2019.
  5. There's no prohibition. I know a few LDS girls that are already in Cub Scouts (just not packs chartered by LDS congregations).
  6. Meh. You don't need Philmont to go backpacking, Sea Base to go sailing, or Bechtel Summit to visit Disneyland. The Scouts in my troop are becoming more and more antagonistic toward the idea of any combined BSA event. After our last summer camp, they resolved to never attend a council camp again. When I reminded our PLC of an upcoming district camporee (which I was looking forward to), it was quickly voted down and replaced by a backpacking overnighter. Meeting other Scouts looks to be pretty low on their list of priorities. Judging by our campfire conversations, their best memories are all events that we did separate from other troops.
  7. Why would Trail Life give them fewer opportunities to make memories?
  8. I'll buy. What's the knot going to be? Square knot with quick release (holds fast until the wrong string is pulled), thief knot (too much strain and it slips off)?
  9. That was my immediate thought when Family Scouting was explained as a way to simplify and consolidate schedules.
  10. In that case, I’m glad that by doing such things I can please the people I care about and offend the ones I don’t.
  11. Well, how would she feel if he opened a door for her or let the ladies eat first because he knew they underestimated how much food to bring?
  12. In my council, it's more common to find training that doesn't happen on a Sunday. Wood Badge is usually two sessions from Thursday to Saturday. IOLS is Friday and Saturday. Summer Camp is Monday to Saturday (we leave town at 4:30am in order to get there on time).
  13. ParkMan, I wanted to organize my thoughts before replying but then @walk in the woods came in and said it better than I could. I disagree with both your goal and your method. A Scout follows the rules of his family, school, and troop. He obeys the laws of his community and country. If he thinks these rules and laws are unfair, he tries to have them changed in an orderly manner rather than disobeying them.
  14. Sorry to correct your correction but The Merry Archers would be the proper way to pronounce it. The Y in Ye isn't a Y but an alternative form of Þ (thorn), which makes the th sound. Unless of course you actually want to be All Y'all Merry Archers; in which case, Ye Merry Archers would be correct.
  15. Oops. I started to write this post but I didn't think I submitted it.
  16. Let’s get a petition going to ban coffee at all BSA functions! It has a long and sordid history of cultural appropriation.

  18. True. To be perfectly honest, I just recommend my Scouts start the Camping MB when they join the troop (I’m also registered as the counselor). They earn it piecemeal within two years.
  19. What kind of overhead does your trading post have that they’re losing money on blank belts? Or do they just not generate as much revenue as pre-tooled belts?
  20. https://scoutingwire.org/marketing-and-membership-hub/bsa-today/ Is it this one?
  21. Was there heavy cloud cover? The moon is full right now.
  22. Our troop owned a garbage truck. It was a small town with no other garbage service. We probably couldn’t do it today but we sure knew where our funds were coming from.
