  1. Well, our council camps have stopped handing out blue cards and the 100 word essay is often the only requirement left undone for Enviro. Sci. I find it easier to just read the essay myself and record it in ScoutBook. Heck, reading the essay gives me something to do while I wait for ScoutBook to load.
  2. I'm curious, do your scouts have the same silly restrictions we do about not shooting each other with toy guns? Why is it so expensive? Sorry, not trying to derail the topic.
  3. Nope. I know a few people whose address is still “Twelve miles past the turnoff to...” Not that they all have telephones...
  4. You’d be surprised how well your mail carrier knows you, city or rural. I never had an address growing up. As long as the zip code is correct, I wouldn’t be too concerned about the package arriving.
  5. I agree. It’s just a lot of fuss if all you need to do is something simple like turn in your endangered species essay for Environmental Science or report that you cooked at home for Cooking.
  6. @qwazse Do you have more details or a source for his reasoning?
  7. All jokes aside about a Scout Master being a wildcard MB counselor, all requirements should be signed off by a registered counselor. There's no national rule saying that an SM can't also be an MBC, but some would argue that it cheapens the adult association method of Scouting.
  8. One of our council camps had one last year at summer camp. It was poorly attended and someone managed to break their leg. No word on there being one this year.
  9. Indeed. Imagine trying to explain the whole affair to someone who just got back from a two week camping trip and didn't see the story evolve in real-time.
  10. I want to try this as a hobo breakfast. Just throw the packet in the remnants of last night’s fire.
  11. http://meritbadge.org - Annotated advancement requirements. Don't skip the footnotes, they're the most useful part. https://www.animatedknots.com/ - Needs no further explanation. http://www.thedump.scoutscan.com/dumpinventoryview.php - Scans of all kinds of material from the golden age of scouting. https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/29558 - The original BSA handbook. Subversive anathema in our modern age.
  12. An attempt that was completely bungled. In my council, the townhall and survey were offered only to a “select group” (according to a council employee). I too would love to see the internal results.
  13. I suppose that depends on your council. Assuming both of our camps stay open, both will be coed (The registration forms are eerily empty and there's talk of compressing everyone into one. My theory is that it might have something to do with council having no published plan in the leader guide about showers, latrines, etc. Hopefully all the absent troops are planning individual summer camps.)
  14. Come next month, anything larger than a troop event will be de facto coed (and depending on your troop, everything might be coed). I don't see how anyone could be lulled into believing the programs are separate.
  15. To the contrary, I know a few different people that have suffered through lugging aluminum dutch ovens out to favorite backpacking campsites and buried them. I believe some have been out there for ten years or more.
  16. Ingredients 1.5 lbs. ground beef 1 oz. packet taco seasoning mix 0.5 c. sweet onion, chopped 4 green onions, chopped 8 oz. package cream cheese 1 c. salsa 12ish small tortillas (we usually use wheat) 1 c. pepper jack or Mexican blend cheese, shredded 2.5 c. green enchilada sauce 4 oz. black olives, sliced (optional) Directions 1. Brown beef. Add taco seasoning and transfer ingredients to a large bowl, reserving drippings. 2. Cook both kinds of onions in the hot drippings until tender. Add to seasoned ground beef along with cream cheese and salsa. Stir the mixture
  17. Unfortunately, I disagree with you on what would occur if this were to be put into public practice. Like the proverbial camel putting his head in the tent, it would only open BSA up to more pressure to drop the religious requirement. How many "I'm a scout but BSA won't give me my Eagle" op-eds would we see before National caves to peer pressure? I would bet you could count them on one hand.
  18. How would an atheist fulfill his duty to God or be reverent? Before anyone says it, claiming God doesn't exist ergo nothing is required of me ergo I have fulfilled my duty to God (as I have often seen on Reddit) does nothing but mock Scouting's ideals. By that metric, I can go from Scout to Eagle in two weeks.
  19. "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you,"Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin." John 8:11. Jesus associated with sinners in an attempt to change them, not become one of them. Do you want to allow atheists into BSA for the express purpose of helping them find God? Sounds like a great idea.
  20. Maybe I’m mistaken, but I don’t believe a district signature was always required. At any rate, I know for a fact that my local scout shop will sell you one no questions asked.
  21. Is this it? http://www.799girlstroop.com/images/Scouts BSA Program Information and FAQ.pdf
  22. I need a reaction that's both laughing and ugly crying.
  23. Unfortunately, that's only one of two metrics. If BSA attracts two million girls but loses its intended nature in the process (for the reasons described above), I wouldn't count it as a success.
  24. Simple, Scouts BSA = Scouts But Scouts Asexually.
