  1. The religious accommodations need to be met, but camp tear down, equipment check in and police line are difficult after a Friday night campfire. You could skip Friday afternoon activities and do it then but what do you do with all the gear especially if there is inclement weather before the parents come to pick up?
  2. Hmmm..thanks for tip in finding my replacement.
  3. My council is a big one and has online option. Unless some big event is occurring camping on council properties is not a problem unless you are wanting specific amenities (cabins, treehouses, adirondacks, cub world). Plenty of camporee field and trail camping for free. Having two large properties relatively close helps (5,200 acres 77 miles and 2,600 acres 15 miles).
  4. A few on the committee were determined to rip a 6" PVC pipe on a table saw but as we got down to the wire my CC just bought the $26 inflatable. The just a bit of wind against the boats is all it takes to wear those boys out. . 10" was long enough. Someone in your pack has an electric air mattress pump. Oh, I learned lesson on paint as well. When the directions say use water based paint, use water based paint. Balsa just sucks up oil.
  5. You may be right NJ, but Lehmberg could still President. We know theft, disorderly conduct and a DUI are not disqualifications for the Oval Office, but for local prosecutor.....that's different.
  6. Think of all the patches you could get for one of those nifty $700 red sashes.
  7. Or... Talk about bear attacks at the the campfire....that should keep them close. Sounds like you run a real tight ship. Congrats. How do you handle MB classes at the local BSA Mint? Require two scouts to have the exact same schedule? From what I have seen during session time Buddy System goes out the window and is just given lip service.
  8. Two questions. For those that have a no more than two to a tent rule, what are your justifications? Stosh, is a scout seriously required to wake up his buddy at 3AM and have him follow his buddy over to the tree line for a leak? Or stand outside the latrine for 10 minutes if necessary?
  9. Tahawk it is certainly within the rights of the CO to make program rules that do not conflict with BSA policy. As you know the CC is appointed by the COR and serves at the COs pleasure. If the CC is making rules against the wishes of the CO that is the only problem. The SM needs to discuss this issue with the COR and IH if necessary.
  10. I am sure they boys would love to sleep 8 to a tent. The problem arises when you have a Webelos III troop or as in my case a Tiger Cubs V troop and they all stay up until 2am and won't shut up. I am the only one who is willing to stay at summer camp all week and if the SM and parents don't do something about this crap, I will institute a similar policy or shut the unit down.
  11. Follow the GTA and report it to your district advancement chair. Oh, and don't take MB classes.
  12. So the troop won't let the scouts sleep "under the stars"? Or use a tarp tent? Sounds like the policy needs a little more lawyering. I have news for you, three season tents like to fail in the snow. What about facilities that prohibit solo tenting? Who pays for the damage to troop equipment? What about hammocks? Sounds like you could have problems at Pre-ordeal.
  13. Oh come on, it is a lot more complicated than "check off some stuff in your book along the way." Sadly the BSHB is relatively useless except as tinder these days. However a page or two should suffice and the boys certainly don't need someone to spoon feed them tracking charts they should be more than capable of making themselves in Word or Excel. Maybe this book is targeted to LDS, we know that is a completely different program.
  14. Kent, as Twocubdad pointed out all of us here know how to make getting Eagle simple. I think it would help if you posted a PDF version of the book here so we could look it over and provide some reviews or at a minimum the table of contents and a few chapters.
  15. With new leadership the subject has come up again. Last year I wanted to subscribe to Troopwebhost for communications, event signups and planning. The AC didn't want to budge from Troopmaster and I was fine with that. Advancement is not a problem I am looking to solve. Having a platform for Scouts and parents to communicate and plan is. Now someone has brought up Troop Track. Anyone use it?
  16. I think the staff deserve 24 hours off as well.
  17. These boys are in my neck of the woods. They have a rather lengthy somewhat cafeteria style uniform policy. Not a fan of jeans myself but at least they aren't basketball shorts. Jorts as well, well it is Jefferson County after all.
  18. Not sure what to think of "smacked doodle". Is that a regional thing?
