  1. ^ who was it that that trying the same thing over and over expecting a different result was the definition of.....
  2. Great story. I am just shocked a Pack could pull off a 5 day camping trip. I can't get more than one or two families to attend a 2 day trip. 18 more months, 18 more months.
  3. There you go again calling a Den a Patrol. However if they really do camp once a month I might look the other way. Like you I want to of for the opportunity to achieve all 20. Beyond the 7 for AOL will be at my convienence not theirs and when the requirement says "with your family". That means at home on your own not with your Scout family at den meetings.
  4. Well it's not like a plane went missing. Besides what is there to report if everyone is clamming up and lawyering up.
  5. I know a very successful troop that sells frozen pizza about 3 times a year. One time period is two weeks prior to Super Bowl. My school does the same thing. I don't need expensive popcorn around the house, but my boys do eat frozen pizza often. So I buy around 10 each time, just work those repeat customers. A weird one I have heard is very successful is Simply Sheets. Everyone uses sheets and the profit is $20 per set sold at $40. 1800 thread count. OR dress the Cubs in drag and sell cookies, I think that's kosher now. Everyone loves cookies!
  6. Overall I have been very optimistic with my new SM/ASM but I have hit a major snag. Traditionally the district Fall Camporee is where troops invite Webelos to a joint campout and the activities are a bunch of stations the patrols rotate through. Admittedly it isn't the most fun or adventurous event. Given our climate scouting for food in November we really only have September and October to have a joint event in the fall. Well the boys have voted on a Watersports outing in September and a out of state backpacking trip in October that will require missing a day of school and both will be a bit pricey and limited capacity. The new SM has proposed a campout at a local park in the middle of suburbia and maybe a bike ride or trip to a historic site as the joint event because it would be cheap and easy. He doesn't want to do a cram down on the scouts citing "boy led, adult advise" and they just don't seem to care all that much. The current Webelos II has been struggling and last year attended a rocket outing with one of premier big troops nearby, we did nothing. My stake in this issue is as IH, CM, temp CC of troop, and a parent and DL of a Webelos 1 as well. Thoughts?
  7. Interestingly there is "controversy" over "all politics is local." "“All politics is local†was used by Washington AP bureau chief Byron Price in 1932. Tip O’Neill first used the term in 1935, when he entered politics."
  8. ^^^^we should be getting some interesting reports out of Colorado and Washington.
  9. What's wrong with an agenda ? I don't know but the BSA says it is a problem. "....nor may any member use Scouting to promote or advance any social or political position or agenda;".
  10. 4' 11" 98# isn't bad. I only hope my boy gets there by HS. Almost 12 4' 3" 65#. Unfortunate if he has to miss another weekend backpacking trip this year.
  11. "Fox said he will be represented by the Rutherford Institute, a Virginia law firm established by attorney John Whitehead that specializes in civil liberties cases. The firm's website includes essays by Whitehead warning of "life today in the fiefdom that is the American police state." ". I am starting to smell a political agenda here.
  12. If and this is still a big if, these accusations are false. Who repays the tax payers for all this wasted time and travel?
  13. Well this was not far from your "Iowa Gold". Ralston NE and there were tracks running near the creek close by. Hmmm.
  14. Nice. Only 4 out of 16 in uniform?..., weewooo. Weewooo weeewooo. What's a the statue of limitations on that.
  15. Years ago I found a glass pipe on my lawn and not wanting in my trash I called the police to come get it. The officer and I had a good chat and he explained it was all over the place especially around the drainage creeks and they just let the wild stuff be because while you might get a little high it also causes a severe headache. Natural consequences.
  16. The House has voted some 50 odd time for the repeal of the ACA. Not happening. The nut on Exit 16 declared a new The End Is Near date. Not happening. The gerrymandering of districts is so entrenched change in House in the next 20 years. Not happening. Our Tenderfoots will be running the show in 20 years and we know what most of them they think. That is happening. Congressional charter revoked, not happening.
  17. I don't know what version of the changes you reviewed. When I made this post in May there was not an option for the Webelos to continue on the requirements they started with. As of July 24th they have had a change of heart and are allowing the Webelos the choice. They heard a lot of flak about it including a change.org petition someone started in the comments over on Bryan. Don't know if that made a difference. I don't have a problem with changing the program, it needs it. Except some for some poorly worded religious requirements and I am not sure Webelos is really an 18 month program anymore. I think having some time with the troop on shorter campouts is good before summer camp.
  18. Who you IH and COR want as SM is up to them. Who is allowed on Council Property remains a BSA member is a SE issue. I like Stosh's approach, but his problems are not going to be solved quickly. I will posit any Scouter that insists he is the SM and nothing else or takes his ball and goes home is probably not a good candidate for the job. Remember the committee members to not have a "vote". I would try try to convince the Pastor to keep the parents informed of the situation. They have a right to "vote" with their feet if they are not comfortable with the SM. Check out the "Eagle and Weed" thread for some perspectives on the parents right to know what is going on.
  19. As a hypothetical exercise this has been an informative thread. But under what circumstance does anyone believe congress will vote and a President would sign a revocation of the charter?
  20. Spread out and crouched down most likely. What do you do with 10 scouts on a hike when severe weather hits? Are you proposing tornado proof shelters for 300+ campers? That is extremely expensive and would put the cost of camp out of reach for most scouts. I have been to LSSR outside Sioux City IA and the devistatiin from the 08 tornado was extensive. So they are fundraising for shelters for that one camp and ignoring all the other camps in the area to satisfy all the worried moms. To Stoshes list I would add a health lodge and commissary with refrigeration for patrol cooking as it becomes difficult to live off the land when a camp has a couple thousand attendees in a season.
  21. Our council has 2 summer camp properties, one with two BS camps and a Venturing base so there is variety available. One issue is the least one of the Council's two Lodges (yes two) requires a troop to attend camp in council every other year. I know, it has been said on this board they can not do that, but they do and it is not a hill I or anyone else apparently wants to die on. Outside that restriction why shouldn't they get to choose where they go? I am hoping they pick Maui next year.
  22. What difference does it make that these were Boy Scouts? Should they have been given special consideration because they wore a uniform?
