Concerns with coed rules, leadership, liability
Sentinel947 replied to Jameson76's topic in Issues & Politics
Not to mention, Cub Scouting is absolutely a Parents and Child activity. -
The current moral panic is bad for males and females
Sentinel947 replied to cocomax's topic in Issues & Politics
He mentioned Social media. I didn't mention his church because he has decided not to share more about it and I'm not going to speculate as to what happened. -

Social media is basically a screaming match where the loudest voices win and only the most invested in a viewpoint participate. -

"The Patrol Method" - Bill tries to convince adults

A plaque or some sort of memorabilia can be a nice touch. I'm a sucker for nicely framed photos. Maybe a picture from some event with the boys in it, with their signatures on the back?

Why Can't Adults Trust the Scouts
Sentinel947 replied to Eagle94-A1's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I'm an Eagle Scout, and I've been through WoodBadge. Wouldn't say I'm part of the "cult" though. I've met leaders that were Eagle Scouts who were awesome. But being an Eagle doesn't automatically make somebody an expert on the program, anymore than playing High School football makes you qualified to be a Football Coach. -
Why Can't Adults Trust the Scouts
Sentinel947 replied to Eagle94-A1's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Very little I learned earning Eagle prepared me to be an ASM. Sure understanding in general how Scouting worked and having good scout skills has helped, but my Scoutmaster training was an eye opener. Joining this forum and lifting best practices from others was an eye opener. Following Clark Green's blog helped me too. Wood Badge training. All those sources have helped me become a helpful contributor to my troop as an ASM more than being an Eagle. -
Origin of the Eagle Pledge and Eagle Charges
Sentinel947 replied to qwazse's topic in Scouting History
I suppose that looked like I was bragging a bit. I'm definitely honored by them, but there's not really a set criteria for who gets awarded them so I don't take the mentor pins all that seriously. I know what I've done to support the various Eagle Scouts, and that's the real reward, is being part of a young mans Eagle Scout journey. -

Yea. It's whatever the Scout wants to do in my opinion. I'm very fortunate to have been given three in my time as an ASM. -

Most mentor pins in our Troop go to Either the Scoutmaster, or even more commonly, the Scouts Father. -

The Question That Reveals the Heart of the "BSA" Culture Wars
Sentinel947 replied to Eagledad's topic in Issues & Politics
I feel like we'd be accused of silencing dissent or something like that. Some of the other Scouting websites I follow don't allow discussions of politics, I'd be thrilled if we went away from that to a forum that just focuses on the program. -
Rifle merit badge, need explanation
Sentinel947 replied to AlexScout's topic in Advancement Resources
The way it's written I'd say they need to shoot 5 groups, and each shot must have the minimum score, but I can see how it is vague and questionable. Scopes are fine. Camp I worked at used iron sights because we didn't buy scopes. Rifle can be supported. I highly recommend it whether they are prone or seated a shooting table. Even a fairly light gun like a .22 can be unsteady in the hold of an adult, even more so for Scouts. -
Eagle Scout and "Scouts for Equality" founder runs for Senate
Sentinel947 replied to EmberMike's topic in Issues & Politics
Thanks Obama! I was on my own insurance last year, but I changed jobs and my current company doesn't offer health insurance. So I am back on the folks insurance for now. -

No offense taken. Although I have seen this interesting article floating around: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2018/01/19/adulthood-now-begins-24-say-scientists-young-people-delay-work/ -

He's 26. If that's a kid, than I'm an adolescent still. I guess I want them Eagle Palms I never finished if I'm still a child. All joking aside, I get that "kid" is a way to refer to younger adults. But at 24, I'm out of my parents house, undergrad is done, working, paying all my own bills. Definitely not a "kid" anymore and I doubt Zach Wahls is either. -
Troop launches 11 Eagle scouts in one year
Sentinel947 replied to WisconsinMomma's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Wow. We've had about 80 Eagles since 1993. Or 24 years. -
Eagle Scout Application Filing Fee

That's good. There shouldn't be a fee anywhere. -
Eagle Scout Application Filing Fee
Sentinel947 replied to hikeoholic's topic in Advancement Resources
I've seen this on the BSA sub reddit. They mentioned Orange County's BSA council. I have doubts that this is true, because it's such an idiotic policy. It really doesn't take much manpower or time to review Eagle applications, and $120 is a ridiculous and arbitrary increase over free. -

Agreed. I thought about emailing the journalist, but I'd have to do it with an email with my real name on it, and I'm not comfortable being quoted and having my words twisted to mean something I didn't say. -

I think so as well. Many online journalistic outlets will use "unnamed sources" when they are talking about stuff they saw on Reddit, Facebook, Twitter or other message boards. If there is an email how come Miss Nashrulla did not quote it in it's entirety in her article? -
