  1. Our pack is currently chartered with a Hospital, but we are massively outgrowing the space for meetings. We are looking into holding pack meetings at the school. Due to connections, we were allowed free access as long as it was during the week, when they have a evening janitor already staffed. (normally any out of school hours would cost us a $30 per hour janitor fee). We used to be chartered by the Knights of Columbus through a Catholic church, but after the KoC dropped charters, we had a hard transition to the Church, specially with their additional Youth Protectio
  2. As a cub leader, I never wore a necker past Tiger Leader (mainly because I bought a Tiger leader necker and didn't feel like getting a new one when I moved up). When I moved to the Troop, we have custom Troop Neckers, which at first I only wore to Court of Honors. After taking my SM/ASM training, one of the things that truly struck home to me. How can you ask your Scouts to be in full uniform, if as an adult you don't wear the necker yourself. So after that training, I have worn my necker ever since. I even purchased an adult sized Webelos Leader necker for my Daughters den
  3. welcome! remember, don't forget to feed the moderators
  4. but seriously, a Great SM or ASM, would allow the Scouts to operate the same way they have always been. But just be there for the chance that something bad could happen. I would not spend the time "correcting and yelling" at my scouts. I would save the words of "wisdom" until the end when they do roses and thorns.
  5. I would wear the flap, once you pay dues of course. My cubs love patches, and it should be the same for the leadership (or maybe I am just a patch nerd)
  6. Yeah, I remember him bashing it on another tread for the same idea, but he doesn't seem to defend his words. The Patrol method is still the same patrol method, just with Adult Leadership in attendance.
  7. Patrol Method is being outlawed in October?
  8. My son's dues is only $60 (included nationals 33 + $1 local for insurance) His camp-outs are normally $20 He paid for summer camp through fundraisers and camperships for council. He paid for his $110 whitewater trip by doing the troops pancake breakfast fundraiser. Grandma bought him his book for his AOL crossover to boyscouts. He came into the troop with a shirt from Webelos, so thats been paid for. I did donate $175 to FOS this year. My son and now daughter earn their own way. Now as a leader in 2 units, I do have to pay my way since
  9. I know for me and my son, we visited troops in December and January. Once he decided on the troop we did double meetings until crossover. Did that for a month until crossover, really helped him get to know the other scouts.
  10. I can understand your frustration, but I don't see this as "Cub Scout Dens". As a leader myself, I have always offered to the Patrols to be available for events with enough of a heads up. Being at that patrol event, will not stop them from doing anything differently then they should have on their own. I do not hover and correct them until they come to me for guidance, but even then, I point them to an older knowledgeable Scout first. Leadership requirements do not change the method and ideas of Scouting, its just another CYA from BSA that has to be made since others have let mistakes a
  11. Growing up, I always thought the jacshirt was the adult version of a cub scout brag vest
  12. I remember reading it that you can only have the BSA logo patch and nothing else. But I am on my work computer and cannot access the current insignia guide
  13. Still one of the more frustration uniform rules. Not that I see anyone locally follow it. No uniform Nazis here
  14. In our Pack, if you are of Cub Scout age, you must be registered to participate. The only "tag-a-longs" that participate for free would be ones too young to register
  15. Am I the only one that found what you said funny? "Its a huge commitment and the the physical fitness might have been a turn off" "I was more into dance and music programs" Dance would have had a bigger commitment then Scouting, at least in today age it is, I've seen dance groups practice multiple times a week, and I was never in good physical fitness as a youth Scout, but I bet I would have been if I was in dance.
  16. I picked one up for my daughter as well. But for you, if the LDS is pulling out, then I wouldn't recommend telling your scouts to get the newest book. The last book still has all the same information, you just have to use the extra pamphlet to show the updated requirements versus electives. AND they are on clearance, AND they still have Spanish versions.
  17. I can understand canceling your subscription. But FOS and popcorn goes to your local council for fundraising, that council that had nothing to do with this change.
  18. Maybe I've been mislead, but I thought you had to be "trained" in your position before attending WoodBadge. Which for a SM or ASM, to be considered "Trained", you must have IOLS?
  19. It would be cool to have them intime for crossover, but I doubt you will make it happen. Sucks, cause kids that join in half way through the season will have a red one while everyone else still has yellow.
  20. Sometimes our SPL will read from the Boy Scout Handbook and all the scouts will sit in a semi-circle and chuckle along... but he reads from a copy of the 1911 version, the boys find some of the original sections very humorous
  21. Our unit has maybe 5 ASMs on paper, with 33 scouts. However, I am the only truly active ASM. In the last year, I have been on more camp-outs and troops meets then the others, and because of the SM's new job, I have been to more meetings then he has. So in a true active roll, we only have myself and the SM. The other 4, 1 never seem to come, but his youngest son his aging out, and he was the SM with his older son years ago. 1 is a new crossover Dad that wants to start helping, but hasn't done more then the app and YPT. The other 2 come maybe 50% of the time. Our Advancement cha
  22. Sounds like they are trying to be prepared for the new Girls in Troops coming in 2019. But why join a Boy Troop, just to leave and take over a Girl Troop in a year.
