  1. After doing Eagle Scoutmaster Conferences for 30+ years, one of the questions I always asked was "When did you decide you wanted to become an Eagle?" And one of the most popular responses was "When I was at so and so's Eagle COH." So it is not only for the eagle candidate. but is a great inspiration for younger scouts. Dale

  2. Metaphorically taking off the uniform and putting on the "dad hat" my hoodlums made me a number of years ago. Oldest is 95% completed with his Eagle Project. All that remains is to do is get it inspected and approved, present it to the hospital, and the give a presentation on the project to the foundation that is giving him the grant. Basically stuff he needs to do himself. Project was building 2 mobile gaming stations and a mobile gaming library cart with storage for some of the accessories. While not as major as some projects of late, with the exception of dealing with beuracracy,

  4. IMHO, this is the best ECOH. I've seen so so many poorly attended ECOHs that I like a ECOH that is an extension to a normal relaxed fun COH. Also ... my personal preference is ... every COH should be a pot luck. Food builds fellowship.

  5. There are no such rules. Unfortunately, I can't point you to anything expressly stating they are allowed either. Needless to say, having a female Den Chief would trigger the requirement to have a female register leader present.

  6. Were they rescued or were they evacuated? To me, they're different things, invoking differing reactions and thoughts. I do realize "rescue" was the news paper's choice of words in their headline.

  7. Once in a while we have one. It is not so much that they dont want a ceremony, more that life is busy and they dont care enough about the ceremony to plan a big thing (a venue, invitations, food etc). We talk to them about doing something so family and friends get a chance to recognize their efforts. We offer a simple ceremony as part of our normal court of honor - this usually works out to be 10ish minutes for inspirational words (usually an "Eagle Charge") and presentation of the award (including mothers, fathers and mentor pins). Our COH is pot luck so that covers food. We already

  8. Share with your son that there are many scouters routing for him. All of us knowing about the endless trail of paperwork required for scout activities. Mike

  9. Well the bane of the Eagle Project has hit Oldest: PAPERWORK. I love his reply to the "what have you learned" question: Behind every great, fun activity there is a ton of paperwork that sucks the life out of you and makes you question whether it is worth it or not. Yes, this project, especially with the bureaucracy and paperwork has sucked the life out of him. His goal was to finish everything for Eagle before school started. Now he just wants the project completed. Thankfully the hard work is over with, now it's time for the presentation to the foundation and conduct training for the nur

  10. We have sent 12 crews over the last 10 years to Seabase and the Out Island Adventure. Had 3 full crews there late May and early June. Great experience, very good intro High Adventure. Most of ours were rising 9th and 10th grade, so agree that the 14 - 15 is better age group. Not only the physical stamina but the maturity level. The variety of activities is good; fishing, kayaking, snorkeling, etc etc.

  11. Interesting observations, thanks for sharing. Two crews from my son's Troop returned middle of last week. Assuming they were on the island with you at the same time. I would add: generously reapply the provided coral-safe sunscreen constantly as it washes off quickly. bug nets are a plus if there is no wind. Avon skin-so-soft helps immensely.

  13. I think this discussion, in the general sense, has not moved in years. On the one hand there's a possibility of kids getting hurt and on the other there's a loss of growing up. It's been stuck there. First of all, I think quantifying the risks and benefits might move things forward. Maybe the BSA has specific reports of scouts getting hurt when left on their own but we don't know how many and what the severity is. On the other side, there is no quantifiable information on the benefits. The entire discussion is Someone mentioned child abduction. How many scouts have been abducted by p

  16. So I have done some work for the foundation director in the past and he knows me. When oldest contacted him initially, the director was concerned about how oldest was going to make it an Eagle project. I didn't realize that he was a 3 beader who has sat on the district and council advancement committees in his council in the past until he was telling us about his Scouting background. When oldest told him all about the proposed project, answered all his questions, and talked about how he would be demonstrating leadership, may help in picking a career, and how the project will help him as well,

  18. I attended woodbadge out of council. My council had no STEM program when I went to woodbadge, and in fact, I did not even know that STEM in scouts was a thing. However, at woodbadge, they pushed STEM really hard. It inspired me for one of my tickets to started up a STEM program in my council. For the first year, STEM committee members from out of council came over helped me run successful council STEM events. They also helped me recruit interested adults in my council to serve on our newly formed STEM committee. Now 4 years later we are functioning completely on our own, holding several

  19. I'm hearing reports that due to an insufficient number of buses, Western Region USA scouts are being bused out early, before or during Closing Ceremony, and will have to spend the night in the airport. This is a pretty stunning level of logistical incompetence.
