Wow! FAR beyond mere Eagle...
walk in the woods replied to mrkstvns's topic in Open Discussion - Program
This is where we need @Stosh to explain the difference between leadership and management. The Eagle workbook has nothing to do with leadership (articulating a vision/goal and convincing peers to join in the quest) and everything to do with project management. The latter might be a valuable skillset but let's call it what it is, not what we want it to be. -
Wow! FAR beyond mere Eagle...
walk in the woods replied to mrkstvns's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I'm sure there are a million reasons this is true. I'll just point out this one. The Eagle project is a bureaucrats fantasy. A project workbook with 47 pages, pictures, addenda, receipts, ledger sheets, sign-up sheets, board reviews, signatures, approvals, etc. What 17 year old boy doesn't want to do that! I don't know much about the bureaucracy of the Hornaday, Ranger, and QM awards but it seems like they are more related to a boy's passion than his inner project manager. -
There's some difference of opinion on this. The language in the G2SS says: I read that as one activity (weekend campout, summer camp, etc. are all separate activities) for more than 72 hours. So an unregistered adult can't go to summer camp and stay Sunday, Monday, leave Tuesday, then come back for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday because they will exceed 72 hours for that activity

I think it probably gets even more complicated in the future as GDPR effects become more fully understood and with the push by some groups to implement similar laws in the U.S. Although I suppose GDPR is actually a thing for the WSJ in a few months.

Incorrect. The BSA medical form contains my name, address, insurance company, policy number, phone number, age, DoB, gender, name and phone number of an emergency contact, and my signature. There's plenty of information there to be exploited even if one leaves all the medical stuff completely blank.

and personal biases/filters. I'm not being critical of firestone, just saying it's common. The hair on my neck stands up when I hear people talking about boys with special needs or autism.

Scouts in schools in the UK
walk in the woods replied to Cambridgeskip's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Seems like a reasonable lists of concerns to me. Then again, my default answer to the question "Should the government...." is a resounding NO. Are the leaders of the new Scout group also employees of the school? Are they being reimbursed, or receiving some other benefit, for their work with the group? What will happen when there is a clash between the culture of the state and the culture of scouting? I think I'd remain very skeptical. I am glad to hear Scouts UK can still camp on their own without adult supervision. -
I always used the term boys to refer to scouts and scouters. It was/is common in my area to be used as a term to build esprit de corps. Perhaps the reason it's all you hear is it's all you're listening for? Kind of like buying a new car then suddenly noticing every same make/model on the highway. At our council training event last fall I was admonished by multiple zealots to say youth instead of boys. I won't be going back to facilitate anything this year. I have no need for language police.

Need a Cot or...?
walk in the woods replied to 5thGenTexan's topic in Equipment Reviews & Discussions
I have a Byer of Maine's Maine Military Cot. It's heavier than a Chevy but more durable. I throw my thermarest on-top for cushion and insulation. They run about $100. -
Are you removing biases or just replacing them with new biases?

Be honest about the end game and quit making rules they know will be ignored and can't be enforced. Leadership isn't difficult but it does take courage.

Yep, witnessed this myself at our Council's annual adult training event. For some reason the adults putting on the event feel the need to do a skit at the start of the program every year. Last year's skit was set at a pinewood derby. The adults playing the boys were acting like buffoons. The only actual Cub Scout on the stage was a female Webelos Scout. The dialog in the skit went something like this: Cubmaster: Mary, it looked like you were praying before the race. Were you praying to win? Mary: No. Cubmaster: What were you praying for? Mary: That the boys won't cry when they lose. The crowd of adult scouters roared their approval, cheering and clapping. You can bet the male scouts in the auditorium heard it too. The message was loud and clear.

Let's do an experiment to test Barry's assertion. You name TV shows in the last say 10 years that have a strong male lead who is a good father and husband, and I'll name a show where the male lead is a buffoon of a family man who needs a woman to ensure he feeds himself or an emotionally damaged loan wolf or a negative stereotype of a player. Whoever names the most shows wins.

NATIONAL POLICY: AOL and Crossover Ceremonies
walk in the woods replied to John-in-KC's topic in Order of the Arrow
The OA is already signaling a return to the original ceremonies. Weren't there principles in the black robes at NOAC? This is one of a few items in the trading post referencing the original three tests, https://tradingpost.oa-bsa.org/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=2018-E-003. -
Relationships, whether they are between two people, two for-profit organizations, or two not-for-profit organizations, are voluntary and based on mutual benefit. When one party no longer perceives benefit they break off the relationship. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has broken up with the BSA and they are setting the boundaries for their personal health. They have no obligation to the BSA. The fact that they gave 18 months notice says much about their character and concern for scouting. If you break up with your girl friend, do you have an obligation to find her a new beau? As the old song goes, "breaking up is hard to dooooooooooo." This isn't materially different than the United Church of Christ removing their endorsement of the BSA after the Dale decision. Quite a different polity in the UCC so the impact was different, but there were certainly churches that refused BSA support in any manner. We can agree or disagree on first principles, but, it's not the first time the BSA has heard this. I don't know the BSA has standing to complain here. If the church allows their Ward/Stake houses to be used for the community garden club then maybe BSA can quibble. Again, they have no obligation to the BSA. Seems to me the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the Boy Scouts of America have set their respective new courses. We should be greatful for the support they showed the BSA and the folks who advocated for change in the BSA should step up their leadership for their vision of the BSA.

Youth Protection Clarification Question
walk in the woods replied to Tatung42's topic in Issues & Politics
Of course if you make this scenario two moms and their sons it's a-ok. -
http://www.mauinews.com/news/local-news/2019/03/era-ending-for-mauis-boy-scouts/ Maui has 853 Scouts this year, and the county will lose 341 Mormon Scouts at the end of the year, officials said, which is roughly 40 percent of membership.

Youth Protection Clarification Question
walk in the woods replied to Tatung42's topic in Issues & Politics
The absurdities are endless. If two boys, say working on the First Class cooking requirements, decide to sit together during their school lunch break to work on menus, two registered over 21 YPT trained adult leaders must be present? It's a meeting afterall. -
I concur, food bank.

Youth Protection Clarification Question

They ignore the contradictions of the rule book and go scouting. Or, they walk away because it's no longer worth he effort. -
How many freebie meeting visits?
walk in the woods replied to Momleader's topic in Open Discussion - Program
My pack registers the minimum. We can use $300 to pay for B&G or other big event, or, register 9 adults for a committee. It's a short decision tree for us. -

Youth Protection Clarification Question
walk in the woods replied to Tatung42's topic in Issues & Politics
Your understanding is correct. However since she isn't registered she's not bound by the G2SS rules. So, as long as the ASM isn't present the Patrol can meet as a group of friends to play video games and if they happen to talk scouting along the way it's all a-ok. -

The national church pays for unit recharter fees. From https://www.lds.org/callings/aaronic-priesthood/leader-resources/scouting-in-the-church/ward-leaders-responsibilities?lang=eng So to the extent there are costs to the Ward/Stake, it doesn't appear to be recharter fees. And, it appears their boys would be counted in membership regardless of whether they are active in the program. If you click through the link in the quote you'll find this process: Original estimates were 400 - 500,000 boys in LDS units. If you add up all the membership losses in the last two years, and incorrectly attribute them all to the LDS decision, we still have 200-300,000 to go next year. We'll be lucky if the Boy Scout program doesn't drop under 500,000 total membership next year at this time.
