  1. Firehouse, police dept, city hall etc are all nice but they have likely been there before. I like doing things like water and sewage treatment plants, power plant, quarry, industrial plants. Like the show How Its Made.
  2. Do you follow Roberts Rules of Order as well? If so you need to pass a motion to approve the minutes before distributing them as well.
  3. I really suggest reading the whole section in the GTA it is a good outline. If this boy and his parents are as crafty as you suspect, following the procedures outlined will be very beneficial if they end up appealing your actions which sounds likely. Like you, I am not skilled enough to craft a totally positive conversation in a circumstance like this. Are you familiar with a Personal Improvement Plan used by business to put an errant employee in a box? There is only one way out of the box and the choice is theirs.
  4. Beyond the usual 3 summertime activities it is somewhat rare for dens to have regular meetings. It is really easy to just go with what you first see, it is very hard to leave if things don't go well. If you can find the time keep your eyes open for other options just so you have a baseline for comparison. You don't need to include your son in the search initially.
  5. Twocubdad, one thing still puzzles me. How did showing up for 4 hours result in this Scout retaining his POR and not being permanently replaced? The attitude in my troop seems to be if we make them "work to hard" they will quit and go somewhere else. So the camping club continues.
  6. I fail to see what is inappropriate here. I find the comments very informative.
  7. National will not force adult participation, but the troop has many tools at its disposal to do so. In this case the rule should be each parent is responsible for theirs son's transportation. Period. The parents in each patrol will soon work out a carpooling arrangement. You might end up with less than a 100 scouts but canceling outings is not an option. Inform the parents BSA does not stand for Baby Sitters of America, I suspect this is why you have 100 Scouts. If they don't like that idea tell them they can organize a fundraiser to purchase a bus or two and you will gladly get a CDL license. I have no tolerance for this nonsense. I am IH and we just lost our CC, I have started letting it be known that come recharter if we do not have a CC the Troop will disband.
  8. In message center do you have anything in the Notifications Preview frame or a number next the Notifications in the left pane?
  9. In my case they are not really "messages" they are "notifications". I am now down to 171 "messages", I just got tired of hitting delete.
  10. They were tied by the GTA. The SM approved his non service, did not set clear expectations, did not hold the Scout to any expectations period. Sure I could have refused to sign but I would have been overruled on appeal to district/council or the committee would have just held another BOR without me. This is a high speed, low drag troop. I use "Troop" loosely, it is Tiger Cubs VI. The term "finish Scouts" is used frequently by the parents. The SM "finished his two year term" and we have a new SM. If things continue I will pull my son. I tried to convince him to move last fall but he made the decision to stay.
  11. The 4.2.3.4.5 of the GTA is pretty clear on the POR time served. Looks like he is three weeks short of 4 months so an immediate suspension of the POR and setting clear expectations would be in order. We have a Troop Guide, while not a agitator, has done absolutely nothing and it just burns my butt the SM has done absolutely nothing about it. I sat on his Star and Life BOR and my hands were tied.
  12. Me to Stosh, I am down to 196 non-existent messages. I feel violated.
  13. Well, if you eat the fish it is like hunting or more specifically trapping. You may have a point with catch and release. It has never really interested me, but I don't like to eat fish.
  14. I must be special. I have 197 messages.
  15. Mark, I am curious to know more about what facilities TLUSA plans on using. BSA councils all operate differently and some on this board complain about the fees charged. With the exception of Cub World the fees my council charge are better than I can get at any state park. Free camporee fields and on the trails. Take for instance rock climbing or COPE is $75 per group with the unit providing the trained leaders. I would be hard pressed to get that pricing anywhere else, more like $75 or more per participant. Does TLUSA plan on using BSA resources at all? AHG were until the membership vote then they at least said they would not. My point being without the BSA infrastructure the program cost for my unit would be significantly higher.
  16. While I personally prefer tents these kind of structures do provide other challenges. In my area they are a magnet for wasp nests. It seems every time we open the climbing tower there is a new one. Even the the Trust Fall platform at COPE is constantly getting them. A Scout who sneaks a can of Pringles in his backpack is also more likely to get a midnight drive thru order from a coon. The black bear population is on the rise in MO and at least one has been spotted in every county south of the Missouri River.
  17. Guide to Advancement 2013 must be that as well, not a policy mandate.
  18. That is insane on the tour permit. Our council follows national guidelines which are reasonable. If your council is set up to use the online system if is very fast. I doubt anyone is really looking at the submitted permits, they are just in the database. Never has done questions or "approved" for that matter.
