What is Scout Spirit?
King Ding Dong replied to GirlScoutLeader's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Per the program updates page one of the changes is "Duty to God incorporated in requirement to show Scout Spirit." How will this impact your sign off. Is the SM now supposed to pass judgement on a Scouts faith? -
Sometimes there is a reason "we have always done it that way". I pushed hard last year for a proper crossover at the end of the school year with new books, neckers and slides. Big mistake, our area has a lot of apartments and thus higher than average turnover. We got burned and it was my fault for not understanding the pack culture.

Trail Life reports increased membership
King Ding Dong replied to AZMike's topic in Issues & Politics
What we also don't know is where the losses occurred. Lack of new Tigers? Units dropping? Webelos not crossing over? In my unit's case it was a Tigers/Webelos issue. -
Dedkad and Q have excellent suggestions. To answer your question the Chartered Organization is where you need to turn. The Institutional Head appoints a Chartered Organization Representative. These two people have complete unquestioned authority to hire/fire all unit Leaders. Call Scouter Services at Council to find out who these individuals are if you don't know.

National Park Service To Explore an LGBT Theme
King Ding Dong replied to LeCastor's topic in Issues & Politics
Well they could start with showcasing all the same sex couplings found in the animal kingdom. Place plaques on trails with all the details. Could be a great Eagle Project. -
Rick and Fred 1. Earn the religious emblem of your faith for Webelos Scouts. It does not say "recognized religious emblem". I think all are free to determine what the requirements are and what the emblem should be. For instance I don't have a problem with the Evangelical Church of the Holy Bubble Gum Wrapper Central Synod. The requirements are eat a package of saltines then blow a bubble as fast as you can. When finished you must say, "Thank Bazooka Joe I never have to do that again, Ahmem."

It is not "trails life", more properly "trailer life". Sounds like a "double wide" situation to me. Go to bat for this Scout, he was abandoned.

@pack18alex "And in fairness, depending on where you are in the country (i.e. unless you live in the "young professional" part of the city you live in, or the one or two suburbs that Jews congregate in, most people in the country won't encounter that many Jews, period. We cluster" Is that an attempt at humor? I think more properly most don't realize they are encountering Jews because Jews don't typically wear it on their sleeve. Unless they are a comedian.

Would you switch membership to the Girl Scouts?

That is my Bear on a Cub campout almost two weeks ago. Bunch of boys running around playing tag and two heads collided. It was swollen shut and he missed a couple of days of school. That picture was the next morning, it looked even worse on Monday. If one of those kids had been a girl we would be in deep trouble "you let them play to rough". All future campouts would have been boring as dirt with the adults constantly telling the Cubs to sit and be still.

@georgiamom, you have many valid criticisms and need to do hat is best your family. A few points I would like to offer. BSA does not require a new uniform for your Webelos, he may continue to wear his blue one until Boy Scouts. In fact BSA National does not require a uniform period. Any requirement for a uniform or changing uniforms is being imposed by your local Pack, not the BSA. Talk to your unit leadership about the issue don't blame National. Secondly I do not enjoy the yearly FOS campaign and enjoy the the weekly Sunday campaign even less, so I don't show up for them either. Third, In my opinion FLL is an even bigger racket. We have the retail EV3 and I see great value in the program, but the price Lego charges for the Educational set is obscene. The time constraints between releasing the challenge and competition is just to tight in my opinion especially at the beginning of the school year. For those if us in less temperate climates than you that is prime outdoor time. -

Although Eagle means different things to different people, it means something to everyone. "Gold" means little to anyone I am aware of. The GSUSA red tape "GTSS" issues were also not addressed in your setup, THAT could be a game changer. I have no first hand knowledge, but I understand it is far worse than in the BSA. Lastly I suppose I would support a "local option" allowing girls in the BS and Cub programs, but I would not want one for my sons. Developmentally the two sexes are just different especially at the younger ages. Scouts is a refuge where we can let boys be boys and do stupid boy things. Scouts is not school. -

Consequences of ad-hoc Patrol un-Method. ".
King Ding Dong replied to King Ding Dong's topic in Summer Camp
Update: we had a meeting of the minds last night and the SPL came with a proposal for two patrols. No one objected at least vocally. The SM and ASM saw the need for a more long term solution and actually having standards for the PORs. The down side one of them was asking me about the MBC application procedure as he thinks it would be a great idea for his wife to be one for all three Citizens. Granted she is an educator and well qualified but all three from the same MBC, disappointing. A work in progress.
