  1. Nice, way to rub in. I have two more years of dual enrollment. Even then this group of Bears is not going to be ready, they have the attention span of a flea.
  2. Another factor is $$$$$, cold weather gear is not cheap, and a couple hundred miles north makes a big difference in climate. A lot of parents also just don't like to camp for whatever reason. 5 miles for a lower level cub? 3 miles with my Bear and he thinks we are on the Bataan Death March. Enjoy your great group of Scouts, wish I had them.
  3. Recently had two capable dads sleep in their cars because it was below freezing and rainy and we were not even in tents but treehouse shelters with platform bunks. Camp had good LTE so they could watch the basketball game. March madness. Last year we did have multiple tent failures in an all night rainstorm in 40 F conditions, tents in 3 inches of standing water, sleeping bags were wet, some boys were in distress. The next morning we realized in the rush a boy slept in the back seat of a car with an adult in the front seat. We probably could have done a better job shuffling things around but at that point our primary concern was getting the boys sheltered and warm. YPT is great and all but it is not a death pact.
  4. Good luck with that. Skype might get their interest.
  5. All sounds like Common Core to me.
  6. Contact the other Packs and find out what their summer schedule is. They should have at least three events in the summer. June 1 your son will be a Webelos so if you are going to switch do it sooner rather than later. If your son is not having fun I see no reason to wait another day to switch. Some Packs do continue have den meetings, but many school based ones do not.
  7. At our district camporee this past weekend the evening gathering included a 20 minute speech and Q&A by a young Scouter followed by a rock concert. The music was a local 80s & 90s cover band fronted by a District Scouter. For the most part I liked it, some Scouts did not and wanted to leave. When Scouts got up and tried to go back to their campsite the Campmaster would force them back. "Boys go sit back down. I am the Campmaster and I said go sit down". A Scout is courteous but let's face it the music was not relevant to these boys, it was "Dad's music". When I was a teenager I would have been bored to tears having to sit through a bunch of "Dad's Music", when it was my weekend. Even if the music had been relevant to this generation who are we to force a Scout to sit through something they don't like. I know if a Scouter had forced me to sit through a Country, Rap or most current Pop Tart music I would have ripped up my training cards and walked out of the program right then. Who is out of line here ?
  8. Posts seemed to end about noon yesterday so I think database went down.
  9. St. Louis does not use Blue Cards, they are white with green or red printing about 5x6. All the same information is recorded but it has a field for the MBC ID #. Stamped with SE signature and given back to Scout.
  10. We had a discussion about this issue within the past year but I can't find it. BD had some good insight into the issue IIRC. Although a criminal record never completely disappears, in many states after 7 years misdemeanor violations are expunged from background checks. There are two key people you need to discuss the mater with. First the Institutional Head of your Chartered Organization as that person must approve all leaders. Second your District Executive at the Council. Better to be upfront now about it, than have it come up later and possibly embarrass your son.
  11. Well that link didn't work so well. Just google "toasted chit" and it is at the bottoms of the page.
  12. Still have not verified the Evil Bic issue but dug out my traning card an it is the TOASTED Chit. Google turned up this old Scouts L post. Training Operation Area Safety Test Equipment Done. .
  13. And for the mommy who worries about Johnny getting hurt, Europe brings us Bubble Football. Don't let RichardB see this he might get some ideas for the GTSS.
  14. Q, who carries their freaking BSA Membership Card around with them ? Lol. Training cards yes, in a little ziplock. Been asked to see those, never my membership card.
  15. FC required ? Why ? My wife works a man who stayed very active in scouts until he aged out. Never made it past Tenderfoot. Loved it, loved camping, loved hanging with all his friends. He just didn't care about the badges. Seems to me to be a very honorable and hardworking adult. Was probably an excellent Scout. Like BD said, there are good one and bad ones and some that are good and bad. Yesterday I was tagging along on mixed age ad hoc patrol on a district urban treasure hunt event. SM son 14, just Eagled not has COH yet was at his best all weekend except for one very bad moment. He was relaxed, very friendly, chatted up a 5 year old on the bus, cooked with enthusiasm, lead, was funny, blew away the current SPL, best I have EVER seen him (first time SM Dad was not there). Except for one moment. Crossing a interstate overpass he leaned over the railing and spit on the traffic below, which my son immediately imitated. How do I judge this Scout, or should I ?
  16. And so who is replacing you as DL ? Or are you like me and doing both.
  17. But we haven't started to hash out what KIND of oil to use. There are so many choices. 5W-30, 10W-40, synthetic, hybrid. Much more to discuss.
  18. Sounds to me like some idiot blew something up some time in the past and Risk Management came up with this. Yes it I know it is required for adults, not sure about Scouts but that wouldn't make any sense. We have an urban "Amazing Race" camporee this weekend and fires are not allowed on the ball fields. I know am the only one attending who has a card. From the camp manual "The use of either high or low-pressure lanterns or stoves must be in accordance with current Council policy. Proof of current pressurized fuel training is required." Good luck finding written Council Policy.
  19. No doubt "Randy" from Bangalore is providing their tech support.
