I'm ashamed....well not really
Basementdweller replied to floridaeagle's topic in Open Discussion - Program
So your families have credit cards and the like, with no CC no ebay. With a Family of five and an income of 22k you don't get credit cards. We have a fairly decent uniform closet, lots of shirts, no pants. My son and I are fully uniformed. -

OK rich boy, what is the Gross family income of your scouts family? $150k or more? Mine is $22k I can see ya went to the jambo, so I am guessing your son went too? So that set ya back what 3-4 grand a piece. Not everyone can afford scout pants, and My PLC decided they did not want neckers. Is your troop boy led? It should be. -
All I gotta say is WOW, what a weak a$$ program. Get off your butt, kick the SPL's in the can and get him moving and have the PLC plan some hikes and camping. There is no excuse for not getting the boys out monthly. Plus Patrol Day hikes

Can I bring my younger son to scout campouts?
Basementdweller replied to newtoscoutsdad's topic in New to Scouting?
As a then second adult ASM, I took my son as a wolf on Troop campouts. Now he slept and ate with dad, eventually the older guys adopted him and he was one of the group. But I didn't force it. More importantly what does the Patrol Leaders council think????? It is their program after all. -
There is already a scouter facebook group.

In an active program Eagle is easy. So you have a lad that is life, is Patrol Leader, shows up for the service projects, is active in the program. Other than big daunting service project, what else is needed????? A SMC with the Life scout, saying, hey any thought on your project??

Benchmark......Ask the guys in the marketing department. I never pursued it as a youth. Just happened. of course my troop had a solid program as a youth. I was astonished when my SM asked me about my Eagle project, I was having too much fun. Now it is about busy body parents, checking off lists to get their boys into college. I am lucky that most of my boys will go to Junior college, tech school or military so Eagle isn't a big line on their resume. While I have a few parents heck bent on advancement, the vast majority of the troop are surprised with I will ask the scout if he is interested in a conference. They are having fun.....Sound familiar.

So I gotta ask here. If adults are intervening when the lads have issues, what are they learning?? Isn't the goal of scouting is letting the lads figure it out for themselves????? Had a lad who knew he would never be elected PL manipulate the Patrol election so he would be APL. The funniest thing happened.. They guy he got elected didn't want him as APL because he was a pain in the butt and he knew that he wouldn't support him running the patrol. Given a chance the boys will get it right , eventually.

Every town or major city has the BSA Troop that is a corporation, they never stop fundraising. We have one that raises $250,000 and own a big bus, program is free for the youth. But the parents work consession stands at the Major league sports team and the major university stadium year round. I ask why??? rumor has it that they have a million dollar bank account. Raise what you need then spend it. Nothing more.

Here is the issue...... I am not sure they were ever intended to help folks quit smoking. It has become a seperate addiction to it's own. In a discussion with one of the chemist at work, he was wondering how long before they figure out how to put other things in liquid. Say THC, PCP or some other much more significant mind altering drug. I have some coworkers that have switched from cigarettes to the ecig.....They use it in our shared work space. I am sure that I am exposed,

Sobbing???? Why? It is a simple aging out ceremony. The boy moves on to boy scouting. I read it like I did the previous few years. I was also his webelo den leader so I did get to remove all the cub stuff and send him on his way. Of course I don't get kindergarten, elementary school or middle school graduations either.

China, Just like your brand new I phone, or LED TV or most everything else you buy now. It is a little to late to get self righteous about being made in America, Our parents made that decision for us when they opted for the cheap chinese made car parts, and electronics.

We have a problem with youth using ecigarettes in our schools and many children are addicted. Our school system is struggling with the issue. Kinda hard when you see a 10 year old using one of these walking home. We treat it as a cigarette and no youth are permitted to use it on a scout outing. Harmless, Probably fall into the same category as caffeine in coffee.....We do not allow youth to drink coffee with out a note from mom or monster type energy drinks on outings or activities. Caffeine is fine for most folks in reasonable amounts....... It looks like it will be irrelevant, the Canadian Health agency has banned the sale. The FDA will probably end up banning it as well. http://www.webmd.com/smoking-cessation/features/ecigarettes-under-fire

Seriously sentinel..... Are you actually reading her posts....... Pure self serving paranoia........If I was that worried about protecting myself......I would never leave my house. but no........I haul a bunch of 11-15 years old out backpacking and rappelling........I see that as a more risky venture than IRS looking at my units books.

It was before my time as Scoutmaster, the BS part is the filling out the merit badge.com worksheets and then turning them in for immediate credit. It just dawned on me, I witnessed boys qued up with MB.com worksheets in the Cit in community line, I wonder if they did their 8 hours of community service.

I have no idea why your so paranoid???? Unless your Pack or troop has tens of thousands of dollars and raises huge money, you have nothing to worry about. We net out to zero every year. So we spend exactly what we take in. If you need to make up issues to get out of something you volunteered for????? Well Go for it. I will continue to support my lads and the adventures we will find. I bet the IRS will never darken my door over it.
-
So how is that gonna work?? Who gets the gear or where does the other unit get gear from? How about the Charter org. Who are they gonna sponsor??? How about Friends of the troop?? Who gets to work the local fundraising oppurtunities? I get smaller troops, it sounds like you need to spin 2 troops.

Did Boys Scouts Damage a Vietnam Memorial?
Basementdweller replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Open Discussion - Program
One of the reasons I don't like cub events like this in a public venue..... Boys damage stuff, especially when mom and dad let their guard down and fail to keep an eye on the lad. I have spent money to repair cub damages at venues. I hope that the boy and parents involved man up and cut a check to the council I doubt it, Millennial's.... I wonder if they will be invited back or allowed to reserve it next year -
That is BS, had a parent go directly from a Merit badge day, Merit Badge Super Saturday to be exact and go directly to the scout shop because she knew I would not allow it. The boys fill out the merit badge.com work sheet turn it in for a signature. BTW, not sure whose signature from the troop was on the cards Quality of the experience is zero. The lad left our troop so not our problem but still will be one of the low quality eagles I speak of.
