  1. down bags absolutely have to be stored uncompressed.....I have a bunch of loaner bags I stored rolled up.
  2. This was a dead unit, two boys 4 years ago and now we might be 40 strong with the visits last night. No Troop Eagle coach, 1.5 ASM's and me are it. Not sure our district has an Eagle advancement person. Only one guy district advancement committee.
  3. My thought on handling this is..... Lad starts tracking his expenses now. He brings it in every couple of weeks and we will look at it and see how it is going. In 13 weeks he is done..... along with a discussion on being trustworthy. But the bright side is I had a handful of other merit badge cards turned in and it the guys new the subject and one fellow even brought in the electic motor he made... The other had a video of his robot running the course. at least some of the work is getting done.
  4. Well we had a bank host the Personal Management MB two Saturday's ago. Had a lad ask for a merit badge card the Monday prior and returned with a completed merit badge card just after the MB class. Well I took the card and asked the lad about how he tracked 3 months worth of expenses in a week? I asked him to bring it into show me. Well he did. Honestly it looked like he sat down at the kitchen table yesterday and wrote it out. the sheet was perfectly clean, the lawn mowing money was paid every week, even while he was at summer camp with me. The sheet was perfectly
  5. Well back from the last outing, storing gear away......There has got to be a better way. So I have, I don't know 20 sleeping bags, under and over quilts down syntheic, 0 degree 40 degree, mummy....wifes, son, daugher and mine. well ya get the idea. Getting tired of the clutter, so I store them un stuffed on a three tier shelving unit stacked on each other. They take up an incredible amount of space. So how in the world do you guys store yours?????
  6. I use the platy gravity filter, has 6 trips on it. Yes you back flush it......no big deal. Flow can be slow as the filter begins to plug......But lets face it you fill the dirty bag. hang it in a tree open the clamp, go make dinner or set up your tent or hang out around your campfire and when you return you have clean water. As noted, you disconnect the dirty bag and squeeze on the clean side and back flush is done.
  7. I was speaking of Skeptics post above. "I have had Eagle candidates come to me with their application and ask me how to fill it out. I ask if they read it, and they said no."
  8. To follow up......I had a sit down with lad and mom last week. Had the merit badge book in hand and asked him So explain to me how you did #4 which is track your dog care for 2 months and you don't have a dog....and I spoke with you MBC and he mentioned he was led to believe you had a dog thru pictures and talking with you. So could you explain to me how you completed #4? He stumbled along that he should be able to count his cat, because it was a pet and he took care of it. I agreed there are similar, but a dog certainly isn't a cat. So the MBC believed you had a do
  9. I like AK's thinking here......Sub them out to the troop. You will retain them instead of losing them. Have a number of Web 2's that have been guests of the troop the last couple of months......They want to join the troop but the Pack and their den leader will not let them cross over yet or award their arrow of light.......A woman on a power trip......I tried to be reasonable with her, but she won't award it till the Blue and Gold. My objections to cubedwelling code monkeys doing stem......Is a couple of hours with google doesn't make you an expert or even enthusiastic about th
  10. Yep we were out last weekend as well, Wayne National forest. 16 miles.
  11. Kinda what I thought. I have read the work book, might look at the GTA. A lad told me he wouldn't read the work book, I am not sure what I would do.
  12. Our troop is hosting our Webelos this coming weekend. We had a number of webelos parents inquiring about attending......My response is that is fine, No alcohol or tobacco, your not sleeping in your van, your not hanging around the campfire while the troop and webs are doing program, It is not free, you pay same as the boys, you will help cook and answer to the Scout Head cook. This is not a poker weekend. Well that knocked off all but 2. I have these guys pegged as my future ASM so it worked out.
  13. Keep it up, we will be coed soon enough. It will kill our troops outdoor program as the boys parents barely slow down enough to let them exit the care. I know that recruiting a mom to be the coed leader will be a problem for us. I have NO interest in running a family recreational club. I hate HATE HHAATTEE family camping. I will never allow it with our troop. One parent per scout ONLY please.
  14. $40 is nothing in my scouting budget.....But I would rather top out our weekend grub instead of buying the council service center dark roast for a month. Might look at neighboring councils instead.
  15. From what you have said about your council it's program blows...... Well except for your SE's $380k total comp package.....that is epic.
  16. Got a couple of lads who are getting close......Just want to make sure I am holding up my responsibility
  17. Looks like it is geared toward troop leaders. I was considering attending, I am concerned I am missing something, but can't figure out what.
  18. So the council charges $40 for the life to Eagle seminar. Looking at the Eagle app, and Eagle requirements......I am wondering. So what am I missing????? I looks pretty straight forward. What is not written in the books or requirements that would require a day long seminar, there is no list of topics or discussions on the seminar sheet????????????????
  19. I find it humorous, because not long ago old kathy was busy telling us her boys and parents think she is the best scoutmaster ever.
  20. He's got to take the course get over it. It is typically only a weekend, no big deal. There was a huge debate about testing out for boys like this, there is no way for it to be done in an impartial manner. As it has been argued many times on this board the quality of Eagle varies so widely that it has become an irrelevant standard for any measure of the quality of the scout. NO a MBC can be 18 http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/34405.pdf
  21. Relax on the alcohol folks. Just like guns and sex it isn't the vice its the people. So next time you see pictures of your next high dollar Council gathering take a sec and look at the tables in the background. Ya those are wine bottles. or the 1/4 full high balls.....yep bourbon. Our council has fundraiser nights at the local BW3 wings joint.......OH my gosh they sell liquor there. At the scout days at the pro baseball, soccer, football or hockey we see adults in scout uniforms drinking every time we attend. OR my favorite, Ducking out after the meeting at the mighty wh
  22. Well that is some pretty bad advice. I have not been to a scout camp that will allow a fixed blade knife and our council policy is no fixed blade knives. So check your local rules.
  23. here ya go order them on line..... I am sure they will ship it to ya http://www.worldscoutshops.com/PBSCCatalog.asp?CatID=1730042
