  1. So PD, how many unregistered parents do you have at your meetings and outings??? I know that I have handed apps to adults and let them know the BSA will do a background check, they and their scout disappear never to be seen again.
  2. I will never forget my first campout with the troop. New cross over with brand new metal mess kit dropped his soup on my pants when he burnt his hands when it was poured into his mess kit. he came back with the little pot thing and proceeded to dump that on the ground too. Naw......havent liked them ever since.
  3. So your felon parent wants to blame the failing troop on current leadership. The simple fix is to hand him an application and have him fill it out. He passes make him and ASM and get him trained. He fails well then his opinion is irrelevent. He may be right, How do you know your leadership is excellent? What are you comparing it to or with?
  4. KDD I would not say a peep to the other parents. What is the point? Alienate them, This is a troop leadership issue and more specifically an issue for the COR,CC and SM to address in private. The SM and ASM's can keep an eye on things with two deep leadership it is a nonissue
  5. Before we go any further what is your position with the troop? If your a parent you need to stop immediately, your putting your nose where it doesn't belong. I am going to ask how you found out about his 10 year old convictions as well. So the drug conviction is 10 years ago. He might be in his late twenties or early thirties currently. so your going to penalize an adult for mistakes possibly made as a youth. The distribution to minors might be he was 18 and his buddy was 17 and he was ratted out. Again we don't know. Far as him associating with othe
  6. generally if they show up I hand them an application. Why shouldn't a parent be allowed to vote or at least voice an opinion on what the committee's current discussion is........ They have skin in the game.
  7. KDD has it right. Without very specific knowledge how do we know???? Your poll is to generic to be of any use. and I am guessing your the single no vote. I have issue with violent or sexual crimes but that isn't what you asked in your poll. The thing you need to remember Kay, is scouting is about the boys. Too many adults get wrapped up in various power trips and forget the lads. So you go and make a big deal about this, and the guy gets asked to never show up again who loses???? The felons son, who is not at fault...... KDD your incorrect, par
  8. They claim the door was broken when we arrived, It was not. There are several storys circulating as to exactly what happened, they all revolve around the Webelos den leaders son and his buddy, Some how the lads foot ended up thru the door and in the tussle the hinges detached themselves from the door. The toilet who know what happened. maybe age.... I was waiting for the boys to rip the exterior door off the hinges. they were playing inside the cabin and holding and slamming the door shut.
  9. I was the previous CM and I am a committee member currently. They are the Pack that feeds my troop that is why I am interested.
  10. We do 2 campouts a year with the Pack. Plus day camp and webelos resident camp. Day camp did not happen this year because we did not have an adult with a youth in the Pack volunteer to drive them back and forth or be a den walker.
  11. Good catch TT. When I was thinking mess kit, I wasn't thinking one of those stupid medal ones from walmart. I was thinking long handle titanium spoon, Mug of some sort and a bowl.
  12. Pack family camping stinks. I really hate it. When I started, it was a small group of about 10 families. All were active and involved with their scouts, None were relaxing around the campfire. It was a good time. The last Pack campout, the unit leaders rented a cabin with a flush toilet and shower, I spent the entire weekend unstopping the plugged up toilet. the someone ripped the bathroom door off the hinges and then broke the flusher on the toilet, we were blamed for a broken window, but it was noted on the inspection sheet when we arrived. cost $150 and a
  13. Adventure is where the boys find it in their eyes.....Not the adults. Adults like big trips. I read on this forums of groups taking extended weekends and flying accrossed country for extended weekend trips. We have troops that go to Hawaii, Alaska and a lot of other places I don't think the boys would plan if they had their choice. Without knowing the boys involved Ages, experience, expectations and physical condition. It is hard to recommend anything. One of the boys favorite outings is a weekend of games campout in May. We just camp at a National forest campground
  14. Hard to recommend when we don't know the type or location of program he is in. Our Troop Quality 0 degree sleeping bag Quality 40 degree bag Backpack internal or external frame Sleeping Pad Mess kit or maybe aquatics gear, his own PFD or paddle if the troop is a kayaking or canoeing unit Lots of little stuff, whetstone, small swiss army knife, Headlight, decent compass, treking poles, camel bak, gaiters, wool socks, hiking boots,
  15. Video games, SPL called off on a camp out when Black Ops 2 came out last fall spent the weekend getting double XP. Band Religious training, Latino Catholic thing Football Wrestling Sick Moves We lose some because of lack of interest......I would be kidding myself if it isn't the case.
  16. Ok remove the POL and just focus on the POR So if a lad misses 80% of the meetings, how is he fulfilling his responsibilities? be it SPL, PL, Quatermaster, scribe or patrol member. The is NO BECAUSE. Do it or ya don't. A lad growing into the position is the expectation. While a First Class Scout, serve actively in your unit for four months in one or more of the following positions of responsibility
  17. my bad, it wasn't you. is was yooperscout who was scanning blue cards. Completely over the top.
  18. Cruel???? No it isn't.....It is a lesson in responsibility. KDD I understand your scout doesn't have his crap together, he's only 11 doesn't work, and your going to make sure he doesn't lose his partials, so he will never learn this lesson with something unimportant as a Blue card, so he will learn the lesson in 5 years his smart phone or car keys or wallet. So the discussion with your son should go, he son, keep your unfinished merit badges in the merit badge book on your shelf or in the front cover of your scout book. Not, son give me your blue card because you wi
  19. So you guys are ok with a Cubedwelling code monkey teaching engineering or scientific method???? Kinda like the Kmart security guard teaching Atomic Energy........Doesn't make sense. Sorry I want a Pilot teaching Aviation, Engineer teaching engineering or a Journeyman teaching electricity.
  20. so you guys don't meet during the summer? We scout year round. Our attendance requirement will not penalize a lad for missing one campout or a meeting or two. But a kid who has football for 4 months should not be a PL or SPL.
  21. The key here is in our unit this will never come up. A lad who attends and grows into the job won't have an issue. A boy who has poor attendance and fails to do the job will be removed well before he fulfills the POR requirement, making the GTA and all the Bull pucky it spews irrelevant. So go ahead and find another unit if you like, you still have not fulfilled the requirements. GTA is for weak leaders or guys like KDD who don't have the stones to remove a lad who is PL who doesn't show up for campouts or meetings. An SMC with the lad exploring his attendance with hi
  22. Locally, in order to speak to the beaded coffee circle you must own a set of beads. I considered buying some beads off of ebay and handing them out to everyone entering roundtable . The old everyone is special so no body it routine. They are old codgers thats all, but they snub all or most new folks. Just another case of folks thinking their better than each other.
  23. You can argue all you want fred, The lad did not meet our expectation for the position. He can request a BOR. But he will lack the signature for his POR, end of story
  24. I hear everyone saying there is a bunch of over time.....Really? Explain to me again what they do all day while the units are not meeting and there are no events going on????? Ours doesn't do boy talks, Doesn't attend District commisioners meetings, Doesn't attend day camp. So what do they do during the day?
  25. I got a question for the group. So explain to me again. Aren't most of the things your discussing here things that their Parents are supposed to be teaching them at home?????? Yet year after year we see boys who have never made a piece of toast or PB&J entering the troop. Pretty sure my son can change the brakes on my truck, change a flat tire, sew his patches on his uniform, shower and make himself dinner after he is done. How sad the BSA is replacing what parents should be doing.
