I gotta say I really hate adult politics and all the Bull that accompanies it. So our Pack is not doing real well.....Lost more than 50% of its membership. Various reasons as to why, moving, sports, job changes and bad program in a couple of dens. So at roundtable our new District Commish holds up the our Pack charter and begins to shred the Packs program and leadership, stating they, are not properly trained, the last UC visit the Webelos were doing crafts with the Tigers....Well 15 minutes it went on... They never attend roundtable so it went unanswered. But the COR was sitting the

Why Wood Badge?
Basementdweller replied to packsaddle's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I agree that additional training is needed such as an Advanced Outdoor training course. in addition to an IOLS. Should not come under the auspice of a paper pushing course. -
Coming to terms with my son's troop choice
Basementdweller replied to dedkad's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Maybe the unit is flush with adults????? I have posted before that the only reason I am SM is the rest of the Troop Adult leadership are too old to camp. And to be completely honest. I would be just fine with being a drop off parent and not being a leader. No hauling grubmasters to the grocery store, troop campouts, no parent hassles, no money hassles....... I enjoy the boys and watching them grow........Sometimes it is just not worth it. -
Coming to terms with my son's troop choice
Basementdweller replied to dedkad's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I am being kind A scout is also loyal.....so exactly how is troop shopping loyal.... You are forgetting this is not your scout experience, but your sons. So unless you see an imminent danger issue or something that makes your sixth sense go off you should not share your OPINIONS with your scout or the other parents. Did it ever occur to you that the Troop leadership is giving you the year or so to cool your heals and get de programed from the cub program??????? -
Coming to terms with my son's troop choice
Basementdweller replied to dedkad's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I thank my stars your elsewhere. Boy run Troop. So are the boys going to pick doing slave labor for a bunch of cub families or going and doing a survival or fishing camp out. Because of equipment damage we do not loan or share equipment with the pack. We do not help with family campout. We do host the Webelos camping weekends and will bring them to our meetings and teach any skill asked. So if your A CM and I know that you are troop shopping, why should I help you, there is no loyalty there????? Return on investment. Why should YOUR attitude toward the -
Coming to terms with my son's troop choice

hmmmmm, So your upset that YOU, Adult, Don't get to go camping, backpacking and other outdoor adventures. Sorry the BSA isn't a family outdoor adventure club. May I suggest googling your town and add Outdoor Club or Hiking club or Canoe club and see what pops up. -
Am I too lax, or is this guy too tightly wound.

Simple fix for two deep leadership. all the adults go back inside the CO problem solved. -
Gay policy takes effect, no apparent mass exodus
Basementdweller replied to Merlyn_LeRoy's topic in Issues & Politics
Yawn, I have a full troop, we have a meeting tonight. there is a gay leader in the troop. Sorry to disappoint, but scouting here locally is a live and well. -
I have had my doctor call me stupid....after getting Poison Ivy for the third time to the point I needed steriods to take care of it a few summers ago. He even brought a picture of it in for me to see......Had a good laugh. But honestly who goes to seek help and provides no details. So what exactly is Scout like???? Is it an excuse for non-confrontation????? Seems so here Lets run the law on the op Trustworthy.....No, deception and seeking advise with no facts Loyal.....No possibly backstabing the COR and CC Helpful.....No, zero facts to help with advise
-
ya ya a scout is kind But a scout is also honest.and trustworthy. How many one sided stories have we heard about people and CO's on this forum? Then this Fellow comes in with zero details and wants help.........So unless he or she is being not truthful in what they post here then what do they fear?????? So what do we know from the original post???? The poster is from New York, is an ASM and is concerned as is many parents???? So exactly what the heck does that mean??????? Like I said it could be a criminal serious issue or just a couple of type A's goin

This should bring some discussion going forward
Basementdweller replied to skeptic's topic in Advancement Resources
Maybe the old BSA is listening to the BS leaders in that their is too much bling in cub scouting and that we lose boys when they cross over because they don't receive enough awards????? Seen some cub uniforms that are way out of line with crap on them, they look like youth woodbadgers. A few boys are motivated by shiney....But I have picked up probably 100 belt loops off the floor after Pack meetings, never to be claimed. So my point, the boys don't really care about them. The old achieve to easily, esteem to lightly. -
Get over it Moose......it is really ignorant crap like this that leads to bad advise. Would you go to the doctor and say......My wife is sick and expect him to diagnose her with those words..... Now if you said my wife is short of breath and has a shooting pain in her left arm and jaw.......You would expect more accurate advice. So coming to the forum and simply stating "My troop has an issue with our Committee Chair, Charter Organization, and Charter Rep." is stupid. Ok what is the issue..... The problem could be anything from stealing money, to boys being mole

Pumps for Air Matresses
Basementdweller replied to koolaidman's topic in Equipment Reviews & Discussions
My neoair came with a bag pump like that it is a real pain in the butt. I use one of these http://www.camp-tek.com/index.html Highly recommend it. -
There are many different understandings of the program. I understand it is for the boys and generally speaking parents and leaders tend to interfere in the goings on. Parental involvement for transportation to campouts and outing is required for all but the lucky troop that has a big bus or a CO owned van. Personally I am good with Drop off parents at the BS level. Or do you want them hanging out in the back of the room on their ipads making a bunch of noise.

are you kiddding. The beltloop program has got to be one of BSA's biggest cash cows. the couldn't possibly get rid of it. Mom sits down with johnny cub and looks at the website...Hey you did this when you were three, this at school, This on vacation two years ago. Bang......30 bucks worth of belt loops. with a profit of $25. Johnny Cub feels like big man on the block with a belt full of crap, yes I said crap, that has little meaning to him other than Shiney. -
pretty sure it is required to get a tour permit and be considered an SM or ASM. http://www.bsanc.org/Leader%20Resources/Training/Requirements Scoutmasters and assistant Scoutmasters are considered trained when they have completed Youth Protection, Fast Start, This Is Scouting, Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.

Just because they are 18 does not make them men. I know some 40 year old's that are still children. I had a blast at IOLS. Better training. It begins with an adult being completely honest with themselves. How many self proclaimed expert outdoors folks have you seen use an entire butane lighter to start a campfire or resort to liquid accelerant. We laugh at the BSA Ax yard but how many adults have ended up at the ER because of a lack of skill that claimed to have mastered????? So unless we institute a training program complete with testing and certificat

Numbers of Scouts in the troop
Basementdweller replied to Basementdweller's topic in Open Discussion - Program
You have seen them......giant tandem axle troop trailer towed by the bus. The trailer has a list of sponsors and in giant 3 foot tall letters Troop 123 where eagles soar. followed by the eagle list by year......with an average of 10-15 per year. Or the folks here that take the airplanes here and there ahhh, no thanks. -
Cooking Merit Badge - New Requirements
Basementdweller replied to Brewmeister's topic in Advancement Resources
Nah, definitely not. "The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to get indoor boys to Eagle without ever walking into the woods with packs on their backs." Anyone who has ever witnessed a Wood Badger or adult Eagle parse our Congressional Charter knows that the words "backpack" and "hike" have no meaning without specific mileage requirements. Without the Journey system, all Scouting is Cub Scouting. http://inquiry.net/advancement/traditional/journey_requirements.htm Brew is involved so he can high speed low drag every boy to eagle. God forbid they actually have to -
Does your troop sleep on cots?
Basementdweller replied to Old_OX_Eagle83's topic in Open Discussion - Program
So the boys don't have the option of where they would like their program.....They are limited to a program or activity that is with in reach of the troop trailer and parking lots?????? Different visions of adventure. So does your troop trailer have a water heater and shower????? -

I have yet to tell a scout that we are full and cannot accept his membership application. Who knows that may never happen.
