  1. Ya we don't know Skeptic. So is the SM who is slowing down his Eagle progress signing the Blue cards???? I wonder why the SM is slowing him down? My son is 14 and a freshman, not sure what has to do with it??? If he is homeschooled then all bets are off related to his real grade in school.
  2. You can't possibly believe the lad actually Earned 134 merit badges in less than 3 years. My program is far from even marginal. I have posted with my struggles with lads earned dog care merit badge with no dog, Personal management in a week. I had a lad return from a Merit badge day a year ago having earned everyone they offered. 8 merit badges in a single day......The other lad that attended said he simply went around and collected cards..... So while there are dynamo's out there tearing up the scout world, I have yet to meet one. Like I mentioned earlier in the thread
  3. This was the same lady months ago posted a long rant about the evils of scouting and money.....How wrong we are in the way we run our finances. She deleted her posts as I remember. The IRS is welcome to come look at my units books.....Very transparent If they want to send a guy to look at both of the dollars we have they can sure due it. I am not paranoid either.
  4. It was a learning for life unit ran by a catholic church and the picture had a latino young lady in a blue shirt with a tiger cub necker. I was very interested in how it was done. Learning for life is strictly the professionals domain.
  5. From my daughter, Girl scouts stinks.
  6. We ran a sibling den.....It was better than having the young ladies runnning the hallway.....Gasp, they did stuff out of the same book as their brothers. They were not members of the BSA, We briefly toyed with the Baden Powell Service Association for their den. Parents were ok with them learning Cub stuff with an interested parent, but paying money to join another scouting organization not so much. Sadly as the Adults associated with the Pack moved or crossed over we lost any interest in having a program for the girls.
  7. Did you actually watch the interview before you start throwing stones Brew. The lad is far from a genius and was busy blowing his own horn at the accomplishment. His accomplishment is superior because in his words most of the other who earned it did it when there was only 50 merit badges...... I have met and shook the hand of two lads who both have earned All of the current merit badges. One is 16 and the other is 17 one is from Toledo and the other from Columbus Both of them earned all of the historic merit badges as well.
  8. Unlike you Scouter99, I did earn it as a youth. What does it mean???? I hung around the program and it kinda happened. I will not forget the conversation with my SM where he suggested I think about doing an eagle project. I was stunned, never considered it. I was having too much fun. I don't remember it being particularly challenging, my court of honor was an Eagle medal looking cake at the regular troop court of honor. I am disappointed with what I am seeing in Eagles...... I would like to think I am not alone in this. I once had Rose colored classes and Every E
  9. You wonder where all of the Eagle bashing comes from.....go over to bryan on scouting and read the stupid, I mean STUPID crap, people right about Eagle over there. You probably think I bash Eagle, I don't think I do......I put it in perspective. It is a long Checklist. All it says about a lad is he has persistence. There is no higher moral standard or citizen test to see if the lad is made of Eagle material. They are just people. Been is scouting long enough that I have seen Extremely poor quality Eagles in both adult and youth scout members. From poor pe
  10. Sooooo, Assuming he joined the troop at 10.5, He is now 13.5 and probably 13 when he finished this stunt. he was in the troop for 30 months. he probably had the 21 merit badges for eagle lets assume 18 months...... So he earned 110 merit badges in a year to year and a half??? that is 6-9 merit badges a month. Sorry something doesn't smell right.
  11. There is no policy, but certainly bad form on the families part. If they had no intention of donating out of pocket then they should have never fronted the money. Fundraising money going directly into a persons pocket is bad form. The money does not belong to the Parent or scout "It must be clear to all donors or event participants that the money is being raised on behalf of the project beneficiary. Once collected, money raised must be turned over for deposit to an account of the beneficiary" http://advancement.ppbsa.org/pdf/FundraisingApplication.pdf
  12. Schools have different entry birthday cut offs. In our school district they cut off early so the boys are older. Sounds like your has a really late cut off date. whether or not the lad belongs in the Pack or the Troop depends on the him, not some rule in a book. I have met 14 year olds who belong in a wolf den and met a couple of bears who would make great tenderfoot scouts.
  13. NAE are you confusing an Arrow of light ceremony and a Crossover ceremony. I see them combined a lot of times, not sure why the OA would be at a crossover ceremony. So your Webs crossover ceremony, If the troop is not their to receive them when they cross the bridge, what are they crossing over too????? Our cross over ceremony is, the DL and Parent remove the cub scout markings the parent walks them to the bridge and the lad crosses alone to the troop where he is met by the SPL and his new Patrol leader who put a troop hat on his head and change his should ribbons to green.
  14. I am sorry I can't hear you your 300 feet awaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy.
  15. I will step in on some of these threads when mom's and dad's and even unit leaders get over zealous about Eagle. Bragging how their boy is special, Take a look at the idiocy over at Bryan on scouting on the Eagle threads, Blake has it right, it is just completing a check list and lad with enough self discipline and drive can earn it. Doesn't make them any more or less of a person than they already are. Last court of Honor.during my 5 minutes, I mentioned that my Job was to make sure as many boys as possible EARNED first class. While Eagle is nice and recognized, More
  16. So did the rule change, recently.. Too many of you have it in your heads that it's 10 1/2. updated : AKDenleader is having problems sleeping too I guess. I posted something similar on my other thread related to this joining issue.. They answered that the book has it stated differently. " Hmmm... so is the scouting.org website wrong, or is this so new a change that the books haven't caught up to the change on the website? Sounds like a clarification by my DE is in order. Your confusing an Award requirement verses a Joining requirement for two different organizations. To Ear
  17. I think ADC has it nailed. Besides, what is that money grubbing, number counting, ghost unit creating professional going to tell you. Oh by the way, our new DE is the absolute worst of the 5 we have had.
  18. Lazy??? When I go backpacking lazy??? naw, just rather scoop up 4 liters of water go back to my camp and let it work while I am doing something else, even if it is watching the grass grow......I am not that interested in spending any time manually pumping water.
  19. The AOL requirements can be completed in a year easy. Our webelos go to resident camp and the troop host them on a webelos advancement weekend. Now there are some boys who because of maturity issues need to be in webelos for 2 years.....No disagreement there. there are some that wont be ready for Scouting till they are 14....... I say the webelos leader who can't get the job done in 12 months is not doing the job at all.
  20. Parent and leader games be damned. If the boy wants to go he can be a guest of the troop until he is of age. Seriously what is in the best interest of the lad.
  21. Webs can crossover when ever they are 10.5 and have their arrow of light. be it october or may.....Blue and gold be darned. Crossover one or two at a time can be a pain in the butt for everyone involved. First it depends on the amount of ceremony. If the Pack has a bridge and a big ceremony, I think your out of line doing a huge ceremony for one or two boys and then have to do it again the following month for one or two more. NOPE they can wait. If your expecting a SM and troop to show up for every pack meeting for 6 or 8 months for one boy per trip. Gotta say that is pret
  22. Training a PL isn't a 10 minute process. Our Troop Leadership training is an entire day. then weekly critiques and on going mentoring. Even so I would not expect a brand new patrol leader to run an entire meeting, that is the Job for the Senior Patrol leader. So following that thought, you adult den leader are the SPL, your denner is the PL. running the meeting is the responsibility of the SPL. you can ask PL's to do portions of the meeting, I would not ask or expect a 10 year old to be able to put together more than one activity a week if that.
  23. 20 bags for four people is pretty easy you need a summer bag, 40 degrees you need a spring fall bag 20 degree you need a winter bag which is zero degree or better If your a down bag guy, you need a spring fall synthetic bag for the rainy backpacking trip....... sounds like my set up isn't too bad but the stack of bags and mattresses is 6 foot tall
  24. I am disappointed in my boys that is the bottom line. I got 4 cards back last night, 3 of them were fine and one was bad, and I am stuck focusing on it.
