  1. Why is it insulting? That is exactly what it is. Webelos Adult led Adult Planned Boys participate. Boy Scouts Boy led Boy Planned Adults tag along because they have to. This is one of the Big reasons I disagree with troops planning big cross country trips because the boys do not plan it.
  2. I am a member of the beaded club, I enjoy coffee, I don't wear beads or knots, Just a plain old shirt with unit numbers council strip and Position patch. Pack your right, It is human nature. I don't care, but the funny thing is one of the topics at last months roundtable was increasing attendance. I mentioned not wearing beads, flair or babbles and not hang around the coffee pot and introducing your self and offering a hand shake to everyone you do not know. I get going and hanging with folks ya know and catching up. I am going to guess the average age at roundtable i
  3. Just back from the movie. They did a good job staying true to the book. Didn't really address the homicidal nature of Peter. They did not discuss Peter and his political aspirations on earth. They minimized Enders struggle at the battle school and the guilt after the genocide. Didn't do the ending justice or his break Harrison Ford, Asa and Ben Kingsley did a good job. Harrison may have been not intense enough. The CGI was incredible. The zero g battle room was fantastic, saw it in IMAX. made me a touch motion sick. I think the theme are too dark t
  4. So here is what I am going to do. I have emailed the SPL and asked for 10 minutes monday night to address the troop on the Hows of the Merit badge program. I will contact scout and ask him to bring the picture of the dog, the merit badge book or requirements and his mother. I will ask him to review the requirements and then ask him if he fulfilled them. He holds no POR, He will not receive the badge, I will not suspend him. He is a good boy for what ever reason decided to make a mistake over a completely stupid merit badge. I will mention that I am disappointed tha
  5. Thats odd, I rarely see another participant. Most of the folks I run into have already left scouting.
  6. A right of passage..... .So you can join the good old boys club???? Join the Beaded coffee circle at roundtable. So those who wear beads will treat you as an equal????
  7. You wonder why many don't view Eagle as much of anything any more. Thanks for the compliment. I will remain in the back of the room and provide a program where there would not be one otherwise. If you view me holding the boys to the standard and expecting them to repeat it as negative then so be it.
  8. One and done, is that how ya do it Bando????? I am not talking about superstars. But a lad who can take care of himself. He can build a fire even if it takes an attempt or two. I expect each and everyone of my boys to have the expected skill set. While a lad can have an off day now and again, all have the first class skill set and will not embarrass themselves or scouting if asked to perform them. you have heard the comment about Eagle scout fire starter when someone dumps charcoal lighter on a fire to get it going or the Eagle scout who can't tie a square knot.
  9. The merit badge cards are in the troop cabinet. No secret, heck he could have even had one left over from summer camp. No idea where he got it. Heck we had one mom years ago bought a pack of blue cards at the scout shop and tried to cub scout it.
  10. A fairly common topic. Everyone whines about Eagles who lack leadership skills, can't tie knots, can't read a map or us a compass, don't know first aid, can't start a fire, can't fill out a merit badge card, can't plan a menu or campout, or even set up a tent. These are the low quality eagles, well along with the perverts, drug abusers, fighters and general hooligans. My lads will have the expected skills
  11. For a one Patrol troop, you have no need of an SPL, ASPL . Do away with the positions.
  12. First thing, the ASPL is not an elected position it is an appointed position by the SPL. We have an attendance policy it is 75% for normal membership and 90% for Leadership and the only thing it applies to is requesting a BOR. The CC will not see a lad if he does not meet those requirements. I would discuss with the SPL what he would like to do. I would try to guide the SPL into asking the lad to do the right thing, which in my opinion is stepping down in my opinion. Second under no circumstance does he meet the requirement of 5. While a First Class Scout, serve
  13. I backpack with my cpap setup..... Equipment choices are important.
  14. that is why your unit will end up lower quality Eagles than my unit. there both mammals, he did the log....Bottom line he lied and didn't follow procedure. I can do quality control on the program now, either he straightens out or I can whine about another undeserving eagle in the coming years. I prefer dealing with it now when he is first class.
  15. The Committee chair wants a piece of it as well. I am not going to bother the MBC again. he answered my questions honestly. Whats a unit commissioner, I am joking.....Unit commissioners are rare as hens teeth.....Why would they need to be involved in something this trivial. The lad and mom got caught lying.
  16. I know the family my son spends the night at his house regularly, I know they do not have a dog which is why I even inquired as to the how, when, where and why. I asked my son about whether they had a dog in their house last summer, he said no. When I asked about how he completed the badge when he didn't have a dog, he said he used his cat to do the care log. ok, keeping a log is keeping a log right. When I called the councilor, the councilor said the boy had pictures of himself and a dog. I will ask to see the pictures and find out whose dog it is and the circumstanc
  17. Maybe if your health is that fragile you shouldn't go with the troop????? If it is for YPT then how is that accomplished with you in a cabin some distance from the troop? It is the troops business and impacts the youths outdoor experience. Your excuses are just that. I am a long time cpap user and Have camped using it my entire adult scouting career. I am not going to hijack the thread to discuss it. But you can do it, safely and comfortably. If your interested post up and I am willing to share my knowledge and what works for me. If your going to use CPA
  18. the reason for that is they don't have a dog in the fight. They can be completely objective.
  19. I think it works. Ya it would make me mad. you go to the trouble of planning a nice dad and lad weekend and the dads are going to stay in a cabin.....I gotta ask, are the boys staying with dad in the cabin or in tents with the troop?
  20. you mention passive aggressive emails. So are his suggestion in line with the way the book says things should be run?
  21. I would like to add that I do not like the fact you can designate only working with specific units.
  22. What is your qualifications to be a NOVA councilor? Here is the application http://www.scouting.org/filestore/stem/pdf/514-017_WB.pdf At the cub level this is an adult driven award.
  23. Turns out the lad lied to the councilor. The merit badge councilor took the boy and moms word on the Dog training and log. Seems he had pictures of himself and a dog, not sure whose it is or was. There will be a discussion about honestly, then the card will be shredded....... You can yell at me and say you can't do that......Oh yes I can and will. Trying to make a point with the young man. I am sick of being lied to by scouts and scouters. My foot is down and firmly planted. If this is a deal breaker for the lad.....Sorry you can enjoy your scouting els
  24. I have the merit badge complain form filled out Just depends on what the council says as to whether or not I file it with council. The boy could have lied or took his neighbors dog over and show him tricks.
