  1. Did it work? I don't go into the forum because I'm not a member of the OA, but another forum like that requires the above procedure.
  2. Terry said to share with you guys that his team should be adding another server to share the workland that has arised within the next week or so. Please be patient while they work to update it. While doing this, I would think that you should expect there to possibly be times when the site may not work properly.
  3. You have to put your username in where it asks for it; your personal password in the next box; and the forum-specific password in the last box.
  4. For all you naysayers out there, what do you really know about potato guns? Funny I read this as we just experimented with the spud guns recently in my high school Physics class-- that's right, we had guns at school. Anyway, the first day, we used one with a single barrel using hair spray and a zapper. Touch the zapper to a nail inserted in the back of the barrel, the electric shock transfers from nail to nail and sparks the hair spray. Bam! Oh, and did I mention we were using golf balls as projectiles?! (wrapped in electric tape for both padding and to add to the diameter) We also used a plastic recycle bin full of paper as the target. Nothing like launching a golf ball at a muzzle velocity of 70+ mph!! Of course, we did that inside the school;) After one class broke the single barrelled spud gun (little bit too much hair spray launching projectile at initial velocity of 105 mph!, we moved out to the athletic field to launch the projectiles out of with another gun. This one, however, was using compressed air and it was a a barrel and then a chamber that the air collected in. I don't remember much about this one, but it launched pretty good at an angle of about 50 degrees. These things are FUN! Also, using spud guns in this use and playing lazor tag are quite different. Personally, I like the idea of them using this as a patrol-building activity provided there is adult supervision and safety requirements met. PS-- our spud guns were made up of mainly PVC piping and both guns have a couple years use to them.
  5. Hey, I'm gonna hang out in the chat room for awhile. Please come on by.. It's been awhile since we've had a nice chat session. http://groups.msn.com/boyscouts/chatroom.msnw
  6. This is my internet ID. Nearly anywhere I go, I use this same ID. It's original enough for me;)
  7. I didnt read the link that was posted above, but I believe it talks about the number that is listed up there as the number of active users. That number is not actually real people. Instead, some of the numbers actually comes from computers crawling thru the cyberspace. Like google, Yahoo, etc as well as possibly some looking to collect email addresses. Dont worry, though, email addresses should be safe unless you've posted it in a discussion.
  8. I've looked about buying a red beret, but decided to instead purchase an 'overseas cap' from ebay. I got it for 10 bucks total and it arrived in like 2, maybe 3 days. I'm thinking about picking up a red beret from the local military store because it is a more 'uniform' type of beret. I think the BSA ones look weird.
  9. "P.S. this kid ran state level cross country...geek?...NOT!" No, that just makes him a athlegeek. But everybody wants to be one of them these days;)
  10. If you're spouse was to watch the skit from the Closing Show at this year's Boy Scout National Jamoboree her opinion would most likely be reinforced... does National also feel Scouts are supposed to be geeks?????!!!!??? I'll admit that I am a geek. My physics teacher keeps telling us that is the hardest part about being a geek--being able to admit to it.. I'm a geek because I get good grades, take Honors classes, etc-- NOT because I'm a Boy Scout. This weekend I went camping with 8 first and second year boys as well as 3 adults. Also, we had a high school aged Italian foreign exchange student join us. He is staying with one of the adults and his family currently. Anyway, he had never camped before-- or hike, etc.. We did 5.3 miles this weekend and he stayed up with everyone else. He really enjoyed it. We did cooking over the fire for the most part and did utensiless cooking Saturday night. No homework, no sports, nothing but the great outdoors and sharing the adventure of camping. It even rained for us;) (HARD)
  11. Welcome back OutDoor Thinker. Pull your log back up to the fire and rejoin us, huh?
  12. Any high school student or teacher can tell you cheating goes on--whether they get caught or not is hard to say. A lot of cheating occurs on homework. I do not allow people to copy my work and I do not copy others' work, but I know that a lot of people do allow it. In our school, cheating would be quite possible during tests and quizzes. Why? Because our school population includes 950 teenagers and the school building was designed for 650. Our school is cramped. Thirty students in one class that are relatively small classrooms it's hard sometimes not to "catch a glance" of somebody's paper. I will truthfully say that I have been able to look at another's paper, but I do not look hard enough to read them because I hate cheaters. Sorry to get offtopic a bit there, but hopefully this could be seen as one more reason we need a new school. Hopefully, they'll have one by 2009.
  13. Kudu, I've seen a lot of internals that have the bottom pocket used as a place for a sleeping bag too. I wish mine had that in it. Typically, I attach my sleeping bag on top of the main pack underneath the top pocket that is detachable. Another feature of internals is a lot of them have detachable tops that convert into waist packs. I keep items such as rope, first aid supplies, rain gear, and a survival blanket in the top pockets. I keep my main first aid kit, my knife, a Mini-Mag, and a whistle on my body myself, and not on the pack.
  14. That way we can no longer be the "Boy Scouts of America" but rather the "Boys of Troop XXX"
  15. That site is owned by AlpsMountaineering.com who I have been told is a great company. It seems there were a lot of their tents set up at Jambo this year and were great. I am looking at getting one of their sleeping bags. At a 45% discount, who can complain?!?
  16. I'm hanging out and am hoping for some company. Those of you on the East Coast have nothing else to do, do ya? With all that rain and all. I'm glad it aint like that here;)
  17. I got this in an email. I don't usually do anything with forwards, but delete them. This one I highly agree with. Story in Tampa Newspaper WILL we still be the Country of choice and still be America IF we continue to make the changes forced on us by the people from other countries that came to live in America because it is the Country of Choice?????? Think about it . All I have to say is, when will they do something about MY RIGHTS? I celebrate Christmas, but because it isn't celebrated by everyone, we can no longer say Merry Christmas. Now it has to be Season's Greetings........ It's not Christmas vacation, it's Winter Break Isn't it amazing how this winter break ALWAYS occurs over the Christmas holiday? We've gone so far the other way, bent over backwards to not offend anyone, that I AM now being Offended. But it seems that no one has a problem with that. This says it all! This is an editorial written by an American citizen, published in a Tampa newspaper He did quite a job--didn't he? Read on, please! IMMIGRANTS, NOT AMERICANS, MUST ADAPT. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Americans. However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others. I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to America . Our population is almost entirely made up of descendants of immigrants. However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand. This idea of America being a multi cultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Americans, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. We speak ENGLISH , not Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language! "In God We Trust" is our national motto. This is not some Christian, right wing, political slogan. We adopted this motto because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture. If Stars and Stripes offend you, or you don't like Uncle Sam, then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. This is OUR COUNTRY, our land, and our lifestyle. Our First Amendment gives every citizen the right to express his opinion and we will allow you every opportunity to do so But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our flag, our pledge, our national motto, or our way of life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great American freedom, THE RIGHT TO LEAVE. AND TAKE THE A.C.L.U . With You It is Time for America to Speak up If you agree -- pass this along; if you don't agree -- delete it! AMEN I figure if we all keep passing this to our friends (and enemies) it will also, sooner or later get back to the complainers, lets all try, please.
  18. I'm lighting the beacon now. HELP! The search crew should be activated for chatters. Come join us.
  19. Hey guys, we're hanging out once again tonight. Please come on by. Right now, the beacon is looking for a certain Brit who has gone MIA in the chat room.
  20. I think you are overreacting. Guess you could be underreacting? And if you'd have to choose, you'd take the overreacting. I dont think it really matters how old they are, you have Life Scouts here (near Eagle) at a point where I really think they should be on the verge of Eagle. They understand the Scout Law and Oath. It's a troop campout-- shouldn't the Scout Law and Oath still be expected? If not, then it isnt a troop campout. Yes, this comes from a 16 year old kid. My opinion, you think, would probably go the way of the Scouts. Let them be teenagers and TRUST them. I believe the first few words of the Scout Law go something like this; "A Scout is TRUSTWORTHY, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteseous, kind, obediant, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent." Oh wait thats the whole thing;)
  21. Our troop allows us to use personal tents and if done so, we basically decide on whether we will sleep with a tent buddy or not. Of course, Camporees or other events where the campsite is limited in size, we will sometimes have to pair people up, but typically not.
  22. That would require being able to predict the future. Also, many times in disasters people are spread out; not 40 thousand all together like that. And, who would be responsible for paying for the infrastructure to be built?
  23. This year I had the opportunity to attend the 2005 National Scout Jamboree as a member of the Action Center D Rapelling Tower youth staff. Some of the stuff I learned there is stuff I will never forget. Friendships were made; rewarding experiences had. Trust was an absolute must on our tower and I definitely felt its presence. Also, our participants (450+ average daily) had to trust each instructor on the tower. Apparently they did:) I havent been home for more than a month and I'm already ready to head back. 5 years and waiting...
  24. Somebody either here or over at meritbadge.net from the Texas area was saying that the Houston Police has told the local council to stop units from attempting to volunteer at the AstroDome. I would guess that those states directly hit also would like them to stay out.
