  1. Sportsmansguide.com has hammocks which are supposed to be made after the GI issue.
  2. I think if your son would have taken the knife straight to a teacher or principal, etc. instead of trying to impress somebody with it. Also, if he wasnt at school, then he shouldnt be at school function. At least that is the policy with our school district.
  3. Eamonn, At our school we had a kid bring a knife that was in a pair of jeans he had worn in the woods recently and it fell out. I dont think he got in very much trouble if at all. I think it was considered an accident and he got it taken away.
  4. I live about 15 minutes from South County. That is all I will say because I am only in Junior High.
  5. OOOOps.... I meant to say that I usually lead the hike when we are on that trail... not that I am in charge of it or anything. I could see the replies coming so I thought I better make that clear
  6. I have two FR50 two way radios which I take when I go hiking. As a leader of the trail I hike a lot, I have one and the person at the end has the other. This is because my mom, who is in charge of the Girl Scout day camp puts way too many in each group for the hike. Also, the Girl Scout day camp now owns about 6 2 way radios to keep in touch.
  7. I have a cheap hydration pack from Wal-mart ( yes, I basicly live off Wal-mart) and I would say only get one of those cheap as a starter item. I plan to buy a LBE rig from a military surplus store (imsplus.com) so I will have a canteen. I am also going to either buy a Camelback or Hydrastorm system. At local camps that I lead hikes at, I have heard several questions about what in the world I had. It works well and I highly recomend a high quality one for any hiker.
  8. I have a brand new tent so I plan to use a cot with an egg crate type pad. I am also buying a new sleeping bag( probably a mummy style).
  9. I also am planning to buy one. I think it will be a good buy. You can buy better shoulder straps for it and other things to make it more comfortable. http://www.imsplus.com http://www.rangerjoes.com http://www.majorsurplusnsurvival.com I have found backpacks and other military type items at these sites. The latter one has a less expensive ALICE packs.
  10. I think that a PDA would be fine, but you should also take paper along in the case that something was to happen to the PDA. I think this is a good policy with most electronic items taken on campouts (GPS should be supported by compass, PDA by paper...). I carry several electronics with me on hikes and campouts. Cheap Digital camera (24.99 at Office Max) Disposable camera (3.99 at Walmart) Getting a cheap PDA (19.99 at Radio Shack) FR50 FRS two way radios from Motorola
  11. Our troop prefers we use their tents on campouts with other troops such as camporees... At summer camp it is up to us and most prefer to bring our own tents. We are not allowed to have food or cots in troop tents. If we have our own, we can basicly do as we please with them. They are our responsibility, not theirs. I jsut recieved a new tent for Christmas. It is a North Pole 3-4 person tent. I plan to use my cot in it and so will my tent mate most likely. The troop doesnt care if we use our own. They prefr that we use theirs, but they said that they really cant stop us from using them.
  12. Sorry about that OGE. I didnt mean to do so it just happened because I guess I am just frustrated with the uniform.
  13. As read in another forum, Woodland camo is not exclusive to the military. It is used exclusively by the military, but is not made just for them. I have several addresses to places that sell camo and other "military items". The manufaturer of camo clothing for the military sells stuff directly to public. Camo is one way for us to blend in. Also, why does it have to be camo BDU pants? Why cant we wear OD BDU pants instead. At a distance, you wont be able to tell the pants arent BSA crap.
  14. That is why everybody on the campout should be wearing a scout t-shirt, a scout hat, and a pair of OD pants of some sort( BDU, Scout, or commercial.
  15. I think we should wear a pair of OD BDU pants and a M65? OD jacket with liner. They are very rugged, but technically is not military.
  16. We( our troop) never wear our Class A uniforms on campouts. They are not made for outdoor use because the material is horrible.
  17. I think that, and I know we all seem to want to get away from being "paramilitary" as seen in uniform forum, an ALICE pack would be one of the better options. It can "grow" with a boy and it is huge. Also, it should last a long time because otherwise it wouldnt be gov't issue.
  18. We wouldnt look like soldiers in combat. The pants would be olive drab, not woodland camo. Also, in winter we dont need to wear a uniform on a campout therefore there would be no need for long sleeve uniform shirts.
  19. I dont do the sewing at my house, but I do agree with not having to replace things so much. BDU stuff is much cheaper and more effective than anything in scoutstuff's warehouse most likely. I have a catalog right here and it was a pair of BDU pants for about $25 dollars!!
  20. I think we should have olive drab BDU pants as our official uniform pants. They also need to be fairly inexpensive.
