  1. "Scoutnut First of all my wife is currently a GSA professional as well as a volunteer leader and has worked on cookie sales and other things on a council and at the regional level /state level for many years now so you will forgive me if I take her word over yours. Second we were not comparing a troop to a troop but the net profits from popcorn vs cookies on a National level and there the GSA wins hands down. I don't think you or Bob can provide any stats to the contrary on that ONE issue, unless you make them up like Bob tends to do." Backpacker, you may want to learn a little bit
  2. Yes, Scouting is a GREAT idea!!! KSscoutmom, I think scouting will be great for both you and your son. Unlike most of the members here, I am actually a youth member; not an adult leader. I'm from southern IL so the terrain is probably similar somewhat between Illinois and Kansas. While it can be dangerous, the Boy Scouts are some of the safest organizations I've seen. This summer, I spent 2 weeks working on a rappelling tower at the National Jamboree. Your ENTIRE trust and your life put into the rope, harness, and figure eight. Our tower put something like 6 thousand participants through
  3. "If a Girl Scout troop sells $1,000 worth of cookies, and the Boy Scout troop Sells $1,000 worth of popcorn, who would make more profit?" That isn't a very fair comparison, however. When you look at it, you'll see that part of the reason for a Boy Scout troop to make more is because their product costs more. Therefore, 30% of $15 is of course going to be higher than 22% of $4. Just because the price is higher does not mean that the product is better or of larger quantity. While it most likely is a larger quantity of popcorn than cookies, it should be due to the price.
  4. One problem to be aware of with 250free.com is the fact that they will not allow you to sign up for an account there using a Hotmail, Yahoo, or Gmail email account. Some people wont have that problem, but I sure do;) I have one of each and that's it.
  5. Hey, a couple of us are hanging out in the chat room.
  6. Staff members had the opportunity to attempt to buy certain items. The councils, of course, had first pick. Whether items will be available to the public like that, I do not know.
  7. This will be my last post at Scouter.com before I leave. I will be leaving my house in about 90 minutes and will be venturing into a new journey for me. Having never flown, nor travelled by myself, this is not something I'm used to. Gladly, this part of the journey is a small fraction of my trip:) Today I fly out, tomorrow I will take a tour of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Thursday I ride down to For AP Hill. Thursday I will also begin training for my job as a member of the Rappel Tower D staff. Right now I feel a little anxious and maybe even a little scared. Thursday I t
  8. Problem was that Centreville Scout had an IP address showing up that is owned by FastRoot, Inc; our host here. And surprisingly, he hasnt posted in almost a week I'd say.
  9. More info about Camp Freeland Leslie would be great:) **I wont reply in the next 3 weeks, but I will check and see if you've provided any additional info**
  10. Trunks are packed. Delivered to my troop CC who will be transporting them for me. Backpack is almost packed.. dont want to pack it all just yet b/c I still have a troop meeting to go to tonite. I leave tomorrow. Mike Hopper Rappel Tower D, Subcamp 4
  11. Hello. Troop 323 returned from "wonderful" Camp Joy in Carlyle, IL Saturday. Monday night at PLC it was brought to the PLC's attention that a new camp would be something to look into. I come here tonight representing Troop 323 in our search. We are looking for a camp that meets the criteria listed below. -No more than a 3-4 hour drive from Waterloo, IL -Variety of merit badges -Patrol method supported -Patrol cooking for majority of meals -High Adventure activities offered for the older boys -Good aquatic area -COPE is a good plus -First Class program would be good
  12. Welcome. For starters, an intro would be useful:) and this will be moved to the New to Scouter forum for you. What are you looking for? Let us know and we may be able to help.
  13. I leave for the airport in just over 7 days.
  14. I'm told we got almost 3 inches yesterday! I wasnt home, we went and saw Aaron Tippin in concert in Charleston, IL. Also, the news said we had a tornado pass through the county. Now that I think about it, dad and I could have come to a lot different environment.
  15. I tend to wear camo when hiking. Why? Because when I bought the stuff I think I was kind of like a military wannabe. Now, I have learned more about it and am no longer really a military wannabe, but a military praiser and supporter. I wear it now because it is what I have. Would you rather I wear jeans?? Also, though, when I hike, I carry brighter colored items; carry a twoway radio, as well as other survival items. Typically the hiking I've done in the recent past I'm leading 25+ others so we aint gonna be hiding. I dont mean to start a debate over the camo... I feel it can be useful. Yo
  16. That is being corrected hopefully today. I just talked to Terry about it and he said it shouldn't be there so hopefully he'll be able to fix that.
  17. I've got 17 days until I leave:) I need to start packing my stuff too.
  18. Here's my take: The site is just a little bit too wide. If you notice, there's a scrollbar to go side-to-side, but it only goes over a few pixels. I think if they tighten up the header part just a little bit, it will get rid of that. Otherwise, people will keep going back and forth the whole time for next to no content. Not a whole lot of product descriptions Why have a "council shoulder patch" page if you are going to just refer them to the council of which they need the patch??? Guess that's it for now. I think the organization could be a little bit better, i'm no
  19. I think they're still out there. What we need is to go back and look at the way we're teaching survival. Is it time survival skills become required? What about gear like whistles, mirrors, etc? I'd like to know how many of the Scouts who have turned up lost in the last 2,3 years have those types of things with them.
  20. This may be of some use. It's different leadership styles. You may find it interesting. http://www.scouter.com/forums/viewThread.asp?threadID=34097#id_36975
  21. Problem is that now all trading posts make the prices, other council people will to keep their other prices down. And so they are still making money to keep the camp running.
  22. So, tell us (on one of these sites at least) what happened with the aq. director. Just remember, purcelce here, was in charge of our waterfront last year.
  23. I would suggest to the committee they keep two or three tents in case somebody were to forget or something was to happen. If you have a trailer, you can just keep them in there so if you need it great, if not it's not a problem. We keep a couple Walmart sleeping bags in ours just in case. Last summer at camp we had 4 hours of rain in a day so stuff got wet especially with the newer boys. I believe the SM went to Walmart that night and grabbed a couple. Also, they may look into speciallized tents for backpacking and such depending on weather, etc so the boys dont have to have multipl
