  1. There are three Eagles in my workplace of 150 or so folks; all working for a living, paying taxes, supporting their families families. I suppose they could also be walking down to 63rd St. for a fix every afternoon but they don't strike me as such. Small sample sizes and all. My point to the OP is even if you look at all the Eagles in Congress and the State House etc. I think you're still judging a large group by an unrepresentative (either in size or scope) sample size.
  2. Hmmm, been using TOPO for some time, may have to play with this one! Thanks.
  3. Here's the actual link to the report from the email if anybody is interested.....https://scoutnet.scouting.org/mml/i/myscouting/GL/Jamboree/Black_Flies_at_Garden_Ground_Mountain.pdf
  4. Can you judge the value of Eagle by a handful of bad examples? How many Eagles are there living productive lives, rearing their kids, serving their families and communities honorably? We don't hear about the regular every day Eagles like that. And ultimately, isn't that what we are shooting for? Everyday heroes? There have been 2,000,000+ Eagles. How many bad actors? A handful? 2%, 5%? Eagle means a lot of things to a lot of different people? Should an Eagle be Bear Grylls AND Mr. Smith Goes to Washington AND an astronaut AND movie maker AND a deep sea explorer AND..... Maybe I'm wrong and in fact 50% of Eagles do go on to become congressmen and hedge fund managers but I suspect there are many more living simple lives.
  5. In our council you have to be a fully trained leader in a adult position as a prerequisite for Wood Badge. I would guess she must have been a fully trained ASM then to have attended WB at 19. Timing seems a little iffy but certainly possible.
  6. We have a dad who is a teacher at a local community college. He and others have been willing. We're over an hour outside a major metro but the suburbs have some good museums and programs that work for us as well and are easier to access.
  7. Which is exactly why potential charter organizations, including churches otherwise open to the BSA, are leaving or not signing up. It's only a matter of when, not if, CA and beyond start this step in attacking churches.
  8. I'm not a lawyer or a particularly skilled wordsmith. The following are my own observations and understandings. Recreational Family Camping is what I do when I head down to the lake to fish, camp and relax, maybe have a few adult pops. If I take another scouting family along it's still Recreational Family Camping. Just because we're scouts doesn't make it scouting and we're not covered by insurance. Family Camping is a scouting event with scout families run as a scouting event. It's run as a scout event and covered by scout insurance. We recently had a scouting reunion in my little neck of the woods, Cub, Boy Scout and Venture Crew families all attended and camped. It might involve multiple packs, etc. Pack Camping is a scouting event with a single Cub Scout Pack with the families in attendance. It's run as a scout event and covered by scout insurance.
  9. This http://www.amazon.com/Tool-Box-Wood-Craft-Kit/dp/B001NZ5SL2 looks a lot like the one my son did as a cub scout.
  10. So earlier this year there was a thread about asking if Scouting was getting too "prissy." It tied in nicely with the regular bashing we do of the Guide to Safe Scouting (Richard B even commented about incident reports). We all expressed concerns that our scouts could no longer go on a 7 mile hike, kill a wild boar with their bear hands, field dress it with their pen knife, lash together a spit and cook the carcass over a fire they started by rubbing two sticks together while staying 300 feet away from other patrols (did I step on everybody's toes yet?) Now, about a month later there is a thread about the Jamboree with lots of comments complaining that the hikes were too long, the terrain was too tough, the lunch wasn't substantial enough for growing boys (BTW, check out http://www.philmontscoutranch.org/filestore/philmont/pdf/TrailMeals_LunchIngredients.pdf for the source of those lunches), we were concerned that of the 25,000 kids on property too many were getting injured on the BMX track, and skateboard park, too long of lines, too hot, no place to shelter in a storm, etc. So, which is it? Too Prissy or Too Tough? We gotta pick one, I'm getting a headache.
  11. "Mr. Lara has said the Boy Scouts of America has a discriminatory policy because it won’t allow gay adults to be members. Other groups named in the bill are Bobby Sox, Campfire Inc., 4-H Clubs, Future Farmers of America, Future Homemakers of America, Boys’ Clubs, Girls’ Clubs, Pop Warner football and several soccer organizations." Clearly a bunch of rabble rousing organizations aiming to destroy the very fabric of America.
  12. Looks like you can get the full paper at this link http://allenpress.com/pdf/weme_17_209_94_102.pdf.
  13. Congrats BD! If you figure out the parent thing let us know . Maybe just a cup of bug juice and a direct question, "what are your concerns?"
  14. It's funny how times change. The ABK says that macramé (square knotting) was developed by sailors in the Navy to keep their hands busy during their downtime. Back in the day of wooden ships and iron men. .
  15. Way off base KDD. Ever heard of a boss and his executive assistant having a fling? It's probably not happening at work but the relationship developed there. The biggest part of resisting temptation is to not put yourself in a position to be tempted. Just because christineka's faith practices a more conservative form of moral standard doesn't make it a subject for your distorted liberal humor.
  16. It looks like those bacteria test take 48 hours and at least one of the other tests had a sit time of 24 hours. How are you using those in the back country? Or are you just counting on your filters?
  17. Sorry, but, there is some really fuzzy liberal logic going on here. This is the Boy Scouts of AMERICA. When we promise to do our duty to our county it's implicit that we're talking about the UNITED STATES. We wear only one flag on our uniforms, the flag of the UNITED STATES. We are allowed to wear that flag patch on our uniforms because the flag code has an explicit exception for wearing the flag on clothing for the armed forces and patriotic organizations. I really fail to understand the logic of "He's only required to repeat the oath." Well isn't that convenient. I joined the boy scouts. I took an oath to help other people, but, I didn't really mean that part. I joined the Navy and took an oath. I couldn't go back to say, well, I was only repeating the oath, I didn't really mean I wanted to protect the nation. C'MON MAN! I think the young man, if he desires, should join the Boy Scouts for the adventure and experience. But I wouldn't set the expectation that we're going to eliminate part of the fundamental reason for our being. If he's willing to stand respectfully during our patriotic traditions, that's fine (I even know the words to "Oh Canada"). China doesn't own all of the US yet.
  18. Fred Johnson: "We co-exist. That's America. " Not anymore.
  19. Yeah, I'm not a lawyer but I believe the BSA has to send the cease and desist along with the threat to sue to protect the brand. If you opened a restaurant and started offering Big Macs on the menu, you can bet McDonalds would be beating down your door as soon as they found out. Not that anybody would confuse a real burger with a McDonald's burger but you get the idea. Not great press though for the BSA. Going to be a tough couple of years coming up.
  20. Spend as little time as required talking and as much time as possible with the scouts doing something.
  21. Our last unit overnighter we had a flag retirement on Friday night, then some silly stuff around cracker barrel (balloon launch, games). On Saturday we did rockets, geocaching, and water balloon volleyball after breakfast. It started raining after the rockets so we made garbage bag ponchos and got after the rest. The answer to your questions, in my ever so humble opinion, are yes and yes.
  22. And Dad wasn't afraid to enforce the rules if he was like mine . I got the same speech when I received my first .22 for Xmas. Must have been 12 or 13 at the time. FWIW, I'm no longer allowed to carry a knife to work. Knives are evil. But, my system administrators tool is ok.
  23. Yeah, idk. Feels a lot like common sense. You may want to rethink that. . Put in a quick refresher when they move up to Bears next spring to get any new scouts or those that didn't attend camp up to speed and sign it off.
  24. Thank you all for the feedback.
  25. Yeah, I think there are election eligibility requirements (15 days/nights of camping in last two years, First Class, Scout master recommendation) and then there are membership requirements (elected, completed Ordeal, registered member of the BSA, Lodge dues paid). Venturers as members of the OA is no contradiction. They just can't be elected from Crews or Ships without also being in a Troop/Team.
