  1. As long as it was the BSA sponsored Discover Debit Card... But really, I think if he could explain the statement to me I'd probably be good with it. Getting the data on paper is just data entry. Now, he might have to explain any cash that showed up for graduation, birthdays, etc. that might have happened along the way that isn't on his card.
  2. We used the spray-on Sawyers for the BWCAW last year. The mosquitoes fed on it and grew larger. Actually, I think it was helpful but I found that I had product left after treating my four sets of clothes. Figuring out the dosing with the spray and getting it even was my challenge.
  3. I'll be stealing this line and adding it to my "I can't fix stupid" and "I can't fix dead."
  4. I blame the boys . "We'd like to come to your camp but the PLC chose to go to Camp X instead because they like it better."
  5. Curious position from my perspective. If a scout was caught cheating on tests in high school would you consider that none of your business or is it a reflection on his trustworthiness? What if he was hazing other youth on a HS sports team? Not in scouting so no worry about friendly, courteous, kind. Smoking cigarettes and yelling obscenities at a village holiday gathering with young children around? No biggie, it's not a camp out, clean mind and strong body only count in the woods. Character is what happens when nobody is looking. Isn't that what we're trying to teach? @Dean, yo
  6. The first thing I would do is validate his feelings and his right to those feelings and emotions. He's not a bad kid just because his belief system isn't in line with popular culture. I would address that fact that the membership rules aren't changing until 1/1/14 so there's no need to make a rash decision at this point. I'd point out the value of the Eagle award and how by completing what he started he can be a guide for other like-valued youth. FWIW, I'll be having this discussion next weekend with parents of a couple of my Jamboree youth.
  7. Did the AOL requirement for being active for 6 months after completing the fourth grade go away?

  10. "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics"
  11. KDD. Another way to read this is..."As per our charter agreement with the BSA, we operate our scouting program to meet our youth development goals. The BSA has chosen a more secular path than we are comfortable using for our youth development program. As such, we are ending our relationship."
  12. Saw this http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/may/17/irs-sued-seizing-60-million-medical-records/#.UaTbJgZQM5k.facebook posted today as well about the IRS being sued over seizing medical records......From an admittedly conservative source.

  14. Happens all the time. Leave the boy registered as a Webelos scout, which you can. Depending on your taste for risk, let him participate with the NSP until he finishes 5th grade. He can't technically get any signatures until he finishes 5th grade but he could learn the skills. Make dad come along and turn him into an ASM.
  15. Looked at the materials on the link and went Huh? Guess I'll wait for the details. Some of what was there looks a lot like Eagle Scout stuff though. With all the other changes could we be in for the end of the age overlap and a redefinition of what constitutes program levels in general?
  16. Religious organizations have been running their own youth programs for years. Some based on a scouting-type model some not. Religious organizations own camps. Religious organizations have youth program leaders and youth protection policies. The SBC is promoting their Royal Ambassador's program already. The AHG existed before the BSA MSA and they'll continue to exist. They may be uniquely positioned to take advantage of this particular situation.

  18. I think Ms. Lerner might be in a world of hurt after yesterday's performance.
  19. Not to be too much of a troll, but, if we're only required to be believers in a higher power, and we're not allowed to preach any particular faith, why not Satanic? What makes Satanism "less" of a religion that Christianity or Islam or Druids? How do you draw that line? FWIW, http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk/3948329.stm.
  20. My first thought was the same as qwazse's that Boy Scouts without advancement is Venturing. At least in our neck of the woods. Maybe a restructure along the lines of jblake's note is appropriate? Make Boy Scouts a 6th - 8th grade program, emphasize T21 skills, and put star/life/Eagle into Venturing as one of many recognition paths? Eliminate the MBs and Eagle in Jr. High Scouting and the focus automatically goes back to skills and leadership? No MBs at summer camp but rather just hanging in the woods, shooting rifles, burning stuff, paddling canoes for no apparent reason? I'll go.
  21. I think it falls short for the MB as I feel like the overall requirement is designed to get the scout to find an organization outside his normal circles.
  22. When I was over there in the 80s, and Saddam was our best buddy in the region, he and the Iranians were both throwing, or at least rumored to be throwing, chemical weapons at each other. About the same time the SOB put two exocets into the side of the U.S.S. Stark killing 40 sailors. We should have hunted the bastard down then instead of waiting for 20 years.
  23. KDD, been there and got the scars. My son is ASD. We've had all the same years of swimming lessons. I bought all the same larger stuff sacks for sleeping bags and ground pads. Struggled with backpacking and canoeing because of physical strength and stamina, etc. FWIW, last summer he and I canoed with our crew through the BWCA and kicked butt. Not because we were stronger but because we practiced and were just better. He packs his own pack and those bigger stuff sacks are now in my camping gear closet. To be honest the social aspect of scouting hasn't been great for him. Too much bully
  24. Let's argue about something else for a while. So, is the IRS simply a tool to provide cover for the great socialist elite to attack their political enemies or was it performing a societal good by trying to force political action committees outside of the tax-exempt world. Secondarily, estimate the odds that the BSA was also investigated .
  25. Not sure I'm buying the premise that scouting belongs to America. I think before all this blew up if you'd asked the average man on the street about scouting the response would have been something along the line of "I didn't even know scouts still existed" or "I haven't thought about scouts since I was a boy" or "yeah, I get the fliers in my son's bookbag but we don't have time for that." I mean if we're throwing around numbers we're 1,000,000 out of a population of 350,000,000. Much less than 1%. Double or triple our numbers by including alumni and relations and we're still talking what,
