  1. Releases are not as good as you may think .there is a expecting of due care but gross negligence is not covered. Some outdoor activities have gone as far getting state law level coverage in my area horse back riding is at that level. They could not get insurance otherwise.
  2. The Scoutmaster is the master of the ship; he is responsible for the actions of his crew, whether he is there or not. Scouting rules can never be less than the state requirement,s but they are free to have higher requirements It's the way we have alway done ;is not a defense. it normally a sign of lazines with the rules. The cost of winning a defense may be thousands of dollars if BA decides not to defend you. Plus any criminal charges.
  3. So what are they calling a new unit: 6 youths, 2 new youths, 4 for another unit, all 6 from a failed unit, with 4 never coming back. The real metric should be 10 new scouts gain. for every 12 scouts who did not recharter. You will need to bring in 22 new. Real numbers that affect membership gains
  4. Add those numbers to the loss of formality paying military members, and the shortfall gets worse. Looks like we are in a death spiral: fewer members lead to higher dues, which lead to more member losses. We will likely follow the Girl Scout lead, with maga-sized councils and less council contact. Single units covering large areas
  5. Watch towers where fun as kid. (12-15 FT) If lashing were good ,rope was good, poles were good. People overseeing its construction understud weight limits centers of gravity, fall risks base ratios ect. Too many did not so failure was high falls greater 6 feet have more fatal results. So no more towers we can look at other ban activities with the same eye.
  6. On a secondary thought, if it is not lodged, try to make a vigil working only at the troop level. If a youth wants vigil 1. Be part ofthe ceremoniall team 2. Lodge officer 3. works at summer camp and has seen my advice work many times.
  7. When it went to everyone, it's no longer an honor; it's just a checkbox on your way to Eagle. The point that no one is talking about is that the youth view it as a joke. Look at the youth membership that renews for a second year.
  8. That was easy to predict. Merit badge mills. Hard to hold the line when just replace you. Part of the reason the eagle badge means less.
  9. "Volunteer lead" and "youth lead" are two phrases that are frequently repeated throughout scouting, but are rarely truly implemented. Be a volunteer who questions, and you will not be in that position next time around. My question here is, legally, where does the buck stop if a scout gets hurt at a district event due to failure to follow Scout rules, such as those related to short-term camp? Scoutmaster unit CO volunteer planning commissioner is a DE or ranger if on scout property. So it's truly volunteer-led if you agree with the professionals As to youth lead no real training or trainers are time by venture age yes at 10 no
  10. What type of fees does each council pass on to the national level? Wondering what the fees to the council will be if there are fewer councils. I must agree that adult training is a joke. The few DEs I knew well enough to talk honestly, their training was just as bad. Ask one about a YPT question, and his answer is that it is coming in level 2 training.
  11. Or they get tired of your calling them out (correctly) to many times they tell you that your services are not needed. But still send you FOS requests.
  12. I will disagree; if it happens, no matter what the reason, it is a scouter issue. The sad part is, where does the buck stop? With the professionals, who are the ones who should be high-level watchdogs, being the least trained and can be the last to unset the offending high-level volunteers, it took over 20 years to get them to stop using torches with the OA
  13. Ok, what other side losses would there be? Sold camps and properties Loss of other jobs. Staff and camp personal Even more loss to FOS due to the loss of local connections. Most likely a house of cards that is falling apart. I'm not sure if it can be reversed under the current system.
  14. So no problem with the. Kerosene. (Major violation of the BSA policy) also use by under age scouts in can viewed as child endangerment. Why have rules
  15. What's saying they won't be .if SA can make money on it, it will happen.
  16. The issue is what unit is responsive if a she is named is named in a problem.
  17. Sorry, it led to that. The advancement rules for bor retesting are clear; they serve more for feedback on the process. That all the way up and including the E-board once it's signed off, it's done. I'm not sure why, perhaps because it's a small new troop, but why are adults doing most of the skill checks off? EAGLE BOR are more likely to get the Scout to tell their scouting story and future plans.
  18. National would never have it, as it would cut down on the sale of new uniforms. Great idea for the scouts, not sure the current cost of a new uniform plus patches.
  19. Another thought is that if I sign the card without trainning, you then I am a fraud and a liar.
  20. You make me proud to find someone else who teaches to the stature. I have said no to large 1-hour cpr classes. They always find someone else. There is no requirement for the merit badge for cards, but I will add it on the side if the scout would like. I cover the price of the card. But i do what someone who knows the correct answer, teaching the badge and hopefully an EMT or higher, to give some real-life encouragement. Basic skill was not the only part of an MB.
