  1. Only this forum would someone see the loss of that many people as positive. That's a huge hit. It will be felt and it won't be the last.
  2. I had 20 nights my first year. I guess I just don't understand the mentality of the non camper.
  3. I think it's safe to say a gay pride parade is political no matter where you live around the pond
  4. We've had a few. They run things just like they do their crew. Giving that Venturing is more focused on project and event planning as part of rank advancement, Venturers are usually best prepared to run such events. All staff should have gotten plenty of training prior to the course starting. The biggest issue is understanding and teaching the patrol method.
  5. Preferred treatment is the other side of that coin. A good Scoutmaster wouldn't give his kid a pass though.
  6. You think it's not? It's a rally with a political purpose. It doesn't have to be in support of a candidate to be considered a political rally. The bsa has said as much. Would you support a troop going to a "parade" of "whites only" celebrating white heritage? Come on, of courses it's a rally with a political purpose.
  7. @50 nights you'd get a lot fewer Eagles that's for sure.
  8. You won't do any 20 mile stretch at Philmont by noon. I did an 18 mile day and it nearly killed me, and I was 22 and played NCAA Div 1 soccer and was in the best shape of my life. You can do 20 at Philmont, but you are taking all day, watering 8-10 liters or more, resting and eating a lot. At altitude you just won't do it in five hours. Not unless you are circling the parking lot. But not in the back country.
  9. Too late: https://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/06/30/nyregion/boy-scouts-make-provocative-statement-at-gay-pride-parade.html
  10. I invite you to wear a Republican elephant tee shirt and step on many college campuses, especially in California. You will be verbally and physically assaulted, threatened and even racially abused. Don't feel too bad for others because it's on our doorstep too.
  11. That's how Rugby was discovered. Just sayin'.
  12. A very good idea and easy to implement with computer based training.
  13. My dad was Scoutmaster of my unit. He was harder on me to make sure I was prepared than he was on the other scouts. The reason, I thought, was because he didn't want to be embarrassed by me being unprepared. The real reason that he was trying to raise the level of scoutcraft within the troop and wanted a few scouts able to demonstrate these skills and lead. I felt like he was always looking over my shoulder. He wasn't. When I really looked he was taking the time to circulate, talk to the PLs and just let the guys know he was around. He didn't hound me about advancement. Many times he
  14. My Council can't get our unit roster right, let alone know who is a valide MBC. Their own camps can't get summer camp reports correct. I doubt they'd have the time or budget for such a detail review.
  15. Change the situation from kid arrested twice for drugs to adult arrested twice for DWI. Does he remain SM and drive your kids?
  16. So the drug user gets empathy. The Eagle candidate who may have lacked leadership gets crucified? I swear.
  17. Odd. Why should you be there to control their sugar intake and not the rest of their day? Why is this the exception? Can't they learn by this poor choice like they would at any other time during the day when adults aren't around? Isn't the staff around to assist? I smell some hypocrisy here.
  18. Why would you be needed then? I thought Scouts are trusted to make good choices all day. Suddenly they need adults around?
  19. Camp staff are doing their program work. They are not watching your kids unless they are in their program area. Outside of that they're on their own. Unless they are going around as Patrols there's no patrol method being used either. Where's the PL? Rifle range? Lake? Who knows? Where's the SPL?
  20. Agreed. This is not Eagle behavior.
  21. Let the Scout do the MB research. That's the best lesson you could teach him. Don't do it for him.
  22. So your vacation is to spend money to attend a camp you leave to play golf? Wouldn't it be MORE fun to just take a golf vacation? What message does it send to the scouts that you don't care enough to hang with them? We had adults in my troop growing up who did this. The kids did not respect them. You may THINK they do, but they don't.
  23. Not just Catholic religious training and sacraments that are taking more time. All denominations in my area require a great deal of time for confirmation, etc.
  24. How about the fact that BSA makes their logo and other recruiting matieral freely available to anyone with a web browser? If they wanted councils to control such things they could put it under access control like they do for other things they want only Council to have. Heck, there's a whole section of the site dedicated to BSA logos, templates and recruiting stuff for print and social media. Someone is full of horse hockey at your Council. http://scoutingwire.org/bsa-brand-center/scouting-logos/
  25. Where are all these progressive organizations to pick up the slack?
