  1. Ours did too, they stayed in formation the entire parade and many parade watchers stood, took their hats off, and saluted. It was a proud Scoutmaster moment for sure.
  2. It is scary for sure. Yesterday on our return from camp I was in the lead truck with the trailer and the wind blew the vehicle and trailer into the guard rail for the median. Thankfully for us only minor damage occurred and we were able to fix it. But it could have been very bad. I know that my heart was racing after that. My condolences to the families and troop involved.
  3. Our troop is the color guard for the city 4th of July Parade
  4. I called them and they said it is a known issue they are trying to fix
  5. I can't ever get the print training report for my unit to work. Any tips on that?
  6. Ah thanks, never heard it described as POR
  7. Yes, I am reffering to the permanent patch not the temporary one. We have to purchase it from the scout store like rank patches.
  8. They just finished NYLT yesterday and our COH is Wednesday, so I think that counts as ASAP :-) And Summer camp is next week. I am looking forward to hearing about their experience.
  9. I want to present the young men that went to NYLT with their NYLT patch at our next Court of Honor. Have any of you done this? If so, did you have any specifics that you said?
  10. yes very sad, My troop goes there for base camp in a week but that is much different from the program he was on.
  11. Wow, it sounds like the range wasn't setup properly. There shouldn't be any way a car would be close enough to the range unless the boy was pointing the gun 180 degrees from the target. BB's don't travel that far and fast, how close was the vehicle? I would assume the the district will work to resolve the situation.
  12. I think it already is sadly. Some Eagles do the minimum and don't get out of scouting what scouting has to offer. The parents are very happy their son got his Eagle and flaunt it, use it for a college resume. Meanwhile many boys that get Life are filled with more leadership and learned more from scouting than just a rank patch. Of course there are Eagle scouts that really work hard, have fun, and deserve their accolades. But sadly, I think they are less common than the prior.
  13. My troop has done this before, we save it for the end of the merit badge as a reward. The boys always come out with a HUGE smile after the pilot lets them take control of the plane.
  14. Yes this is for chaffing. Apply it underarms and crotch areas. The green bottle has menthol and if you are already chaffed if is not a pleasant experience. No worries, ask away.
  15. Yes, and tell him how to use it. The stuff in the orange bottle not the green
  16. Awesome! Wait a minute..... are those girls? Oh, that is another thread here :-) I am happy they are having fun scouting!
  17. Last night at our meeting I discussed it with the boys. I started with the famous Mr. Rogers' quote “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.â€Then I talked about the normal people at or around the event that did what they could do to help. I tried to make sure we focused on those people rather than the specifics of the act itseld. Discussed how we are preparing them for the unexpected and challenged them to be the helpers. Many of my boys came up afterwards saying how
  18. If I read this right, we can only encourage scouts to wear their uniform. It sounds like one method "advancement" is not supporting another method "uniform".
  19. Grabbing some popcorn for this thread....
  20. My condolences go out to the troop and the family of the scout. Very sad news.
  21. Adamcp covers most of what I talk about. They are so nervous at Scout rank of the big-bad-scoutmaster. My hope is that afterwards, they leave happy and knowing that I am there to help him succeed. I try to focus on opening their minds to new possibilities, focus on fun not requirements, and encourage them to grow as leaders. It isn't my first one on one conversation with them but they are more nervous and formal at the rank SM conference. I do my best on campouts to pull boys away to discuss their current status and scouting experience. For older ones, it is usually about leadersh
  22. I think the key thing here is how many of the 185,000 boys actually scout in LDS Teams and Crews? Based on my discussions with friends that are LDS and have their son dual enrolled in an LDS Troop and our Troop. There is some percentage that are just signed up and not involved, some are active but only because they are called to be in the program, and others that are active and enjoy it. For the last category, there are other troops and nothing stopping LDS leaders to form a unit not chartered by the church. That is the group that BSA should reach out to. If we call it a third for easy ma
