  1. All good feedback, what would you think of this? (sadly funny stuff sometimes just isn't scout appropriate, I recently watched the Bad News Bears and forgot what it was really like) It was funny to me still but my teenagers didn't think it was funny at all. No: coarse language (dab nabbit isn't course but the D-word is highly offensive to some scouts in my experience, let alone the much more coarse words) disparage a certain demographic group (yes referring to minorities, disabilities, or gender) inappropriate costumes (cross dressing, nudity, underwear) This is actually directly fro
  2. I am trying to document for the boys a set of rules/guidelines to help them understand what is scout appropriate and what isn't . I'd love to know what your troop's guidelines are. Here are guidelines that make sense to me, but I might be over limited or under limiting. No: coarse language disparage a certain demographic group inappropriate costumes (cross dressing, nudity, underwear) violence/death toilet humor inside jokes alcohol/drunkenness
  3. Yes the scouts spread the mulch. It is an all hands on deck day for the troop. They actually end up having a good time on the spreading day. It is harder to get them motivated for the sale part of it than the spreading.
  4. I appreciate the feedback, I agree with you. I am hopeful that my message to them about what they will lose out on from their plan by not carrying through will motivate them. Otherwise, I suppose them losing out on those activities was motivate them for next year. On a side note: the great thing about the mulch is that we are able to sell it cheaper than home depot with delivery and the boys spread it. So it doesn't feel like popcorn or other selling that is overpriced. But none the less, it could be for all the reasons you point out.
  5. Cool! let me know how it goes. We did find someone in Bass Pro corporate that gave us a discount Bass Pro equipment. It wasn't a set percentage but they worked with us.
  6. We are chartered by a Methodist church and we have scouts that are: Christian, Muslim, Catholic, Jewish, and LDS. I guess I am happy that we are chartered by a Methodist church rather than another religion that wouldn't allow us to provide a great program to all boys.
  7. I do not believe my comments are filled with contempt of others. While different religious groups have different beliefs, it is not our purpose to impose a singular religion for our youth and families. BSA recognizes this as they have many religious awards. None of that is an attack on churches, it is open to allowing our youth to have different faiths and beliefs. Tolerance as you mention, in my interpretation would be to allow scouts to have different religious beliefs. Even if that is different from the charter organization. I will always be tolerant of any boy that is religi
  8. BSA recognizes people of all religions and religious beliefs. Having a unit force a singular religious point of view doesn't match that BSA practice. That is why we perform interfaith services for example.
  9. we use a private system for photos, calendar, and communication. I do see the parents post them to facebook later. Facebook, instagram, snapchat ..... all can be used in bad ways and good ways. Personally, I prefer for public pages to show where the boys have been vs. where they are going.
  10. I can live with others having a differing opinion, and I respect your opinion and feedback.
  11. Feel free to ignore me if you would like. But how dare you comment on my character. I do not comment on your character and what I think of it because I don't know you well enough. I disagree with you on this subject and you will not change my opinion. Feel free to come to Texas and sit with me at a restaurant and have a civil discussion and realize that there are a lot of people in this world that don't think the way that you do. I can guarantee to you that in your workplace, scout unit, and even family that you will find that you do not agree with them. Do you fallback on assassi
  12. sorry :-( That sucks. We have a granddad that takes his son to scouts and I think it is an awesome bonding time for them. Give us her contact info and we will all call/email her to do the right thing :-)
  13. Frankly, if you can't substitute the word "black" or "christian" into what ever you put in it is wrong IMHO. The local option is BS and sounds like Jim Crow laws to me. If he never outed himself there would have been no issue with advancement. IMHO, he showed he was brave by saying it. I am confident at that age there are many scouts that know about their own sexuality and wouldn't be brave enough to say anything in fear of retribution. There is no sex in scouting, not even discussion of it. That is a subject to be discussed elsewhere. There has been zero issues with tenting j
  14. Understood about too many fund raisers, we have 2 popcorn with isn't pushed to hard and mulch. I sent out a message to the boys reminding them of all the equipment they use and what the troop has to pay for and that we are only 25% of the way there for our budget. At the next meeting, I will ask them which of the campouts they want to cancel, shooting, climbing, or canoeing or all of them because we can't afford them. In our area, everyone needs mulch and the price is the same as the store but they get free delivery and can even pay for the boys to spread it. it is a great deal and I
  15. Well, we have a boy in our troop that had let his leaders know he was gay during his communications merit badge. Not exactly the right time to proclaim it I guess but his troop proceeded to inform him that he will never advance in rank even though the BSA had already made their decision. He came to our troop and we told him that fact doesn't matter to us, we cared about his leadership and ability to complete the requirements. None of the other boys knew in either case about his preference and he is a great leader. So he is doing quite well. It infuriates me that the other troop decided
  16. We annually sell mulch for fundraising but this year, only 3 scouts have bothered to sell. How do you motivate them to try?
  17. Thanks I love this. I am totally embedding it in my scoutmaster minute for tonight
  18. Good luck, Logistics will most likely be the most difficult part. You will have a lot of energy in your troop for sure, When we grew huge, going to summer camp was a problem. Some camps have a limited amount of space, that affected where our boys are going this summer.
  19. Ha Ha, love it! I have way too many non-coffee drinkers. Now that I cannot understand.
  20. I should note that the adults are in background supplemental staff roles. The youth do all the planning and running of the event.
