  1. I believe he was on the high adventure program, I was there the week after them, and that camp have elevation unlike most of Texas. That week was very hot, but I would refrain from accusations about the other people there. I feel horrible for the family.
  2. Our district which is fairly close is sending crews of scouts and scouters to Smithville to help with the cleanup there this weekend. As well as coordinating aide efforts.
  3. Thanks for being down there helping! I will donate to those, thanks.
  4. I am going to do that. SM signs off on Star and above rank requirements.
  5. Well, met with the parents...Good news is that the scout is staying in the troop so maybe I can positively affect him. Parents excused every action he did because of ADHD or family issues.... I told them up front, I was not going to apologize and that we are here to help their son and prepare him for life. Mom shot me a glare and was about to say something until dad spoke up and said he believes me. We will see what happens, but I think he will continue to get excuses made for him. They want me to only provide positive feedback, I flat out told them I could not do that. I guess
  6. We are close-ish and our council has so far focused on food drives. I kept thinking about all the troop trailers floating away :-(
  7. We are thinking of y'all. Let us know the best way for us to help.
  8. I love it, I wish I could say that at the Court of Honor scout master minute in front of the troop. Thanks, I appreciate the support.
  9. So aftermath, met with the CC and our UC to discuss the issue. The CC talked to the parents and the parents demanded the rank be awarded and I apologize to the boy. We said no, and they want to talk with us in person. I will bring a transfer application with me for that discussion for them.....
  10. A lot of summer camps place the 14 year age restriction blanket on shotgun and climbing
  11. They are actually volunteers (Dad is an Eagle...) ASM IOLS trained, they have different standards for their sons than others...... I and the CC are meeting today and going to formulate a plan. Things like this kill my scout spirit to help people but I will continue forward.
  12. Interesting thing is that the scout accepted it just fine. It is the parents that are having the problem. I spoke with the scout afterwards with an ASM along for the conversation and he didn't seem to have an issue with waiting for him to show me what I think he can do. Maybe, I am the only one that believes he can change his behavior?
  13. Frustrated about a scout that doesn't follow the scout law (lying and disrespectful to adults), want to be signed off for Star rank. Tell him he needs to improve and tell him what he needs to do for the sign off. Parents come rolling in bitching and moaning how I am picking on their son. Parents are the hardest part of the role for sure.
  14. For CPR and basic first aid, I get trained yearly for work for free. Most companies want so many to be emergency response team members and will get you trained for free. That doesn't cover the WFA portion, but it is a start.
  15. My scouts stay in because it is fun and they get to choose what fun things they want to do. The minute they have to stare at some old guy with a power point.....yawn
  16. Hot summer campout in 100+ degree weather where boys in our troop learned to shoot arrows and 22 rifles for the first time. Then 3 hours just having a Blast in the pool for fun. They all passed out before we made in out of the parking lot. IMHO, that is was scouting is about.
  17. You are welcome, you might check with your council. Our council is putting on a council wide event on Monday for the eclipse. Good luck
  18. Bummer you just found out, it was on the bryan scouting log for a bit now. If you don't subscribe to that, I suggest you do. It is an interesting blog and useful as well. If you go here: https://blog.scoutingmagazine.org/2017/06/27/earn-bsa-2017-solar-eclipse-patch/you can subscribe to the blog
  19. The thing that helped me most is to not question everything I do. Provide some advice but realize the new SM will be overwhelmed and feel like everyone is questioning avery liittle decision. Over course, an email here and there is helpful. And just because you don't do things the same way as before, that is ok. Give the new scoutmaster the program leader books, book #1 is really good. If you follow the program it works. https://blog.scoutingmagazine.org/2013/08/15/first-look-troop-leader-guidebooks-set-to-replace-the-scoutmaster-handbook/
