  1. Is he still Involved in Scouting or did Baseball take over in his life?.. Wonder what Happened to him afterwards. Hopefully a scout made it. In that case it's a good start.
  2. Territory and turf, total BS. We have some McMansions in our "turf" but also a lot of apartment complexes. Popcorn does not sell there at all. Why are you selling popcorn at all ? Sell pizzas or something else people can actually use. Families are going to but frozen pizza anyway, why not pay a little more for some and help out a good cause. $20 for a small bag of Carmel popcorn is a luxury. Can you find a way to put that $4k BBQ to work ?
  3. Would you also suggest to them they keep all their savings tucked away in their handbook as well ?
  4. At the last troop COH I counted 3 scouts in athletic shorts. The cubs were in a parade and 4 or 5 showed up in athletic shorts. I had them tuck them in and yes it looked stupid. All their shirts were untucked after the first mile
  5. That's a tough lesson to learn if handbook gets lost.
  6. Pack how do we square that with the 2nd amendment and a culture where anyone can get a weapon with no questions asked ? People will get gunned down in the parking lot of Safeway for a loaf of bread.
  7. St. Louis started SFF 28 years ago and I am told purposely scheduled it during deer season and shut our properties down those two weekends. Annoys quite a few dads. Anyone ever hear of a scout getting shot on BSA property in season ?
  8. That's what's great about Missouri. The boys are used to hearing "Show Me"
  9. Lol. I bet there are some units that do that. Feed our scouts.
  10. We don't need no stinkin regulations. As some on this board have pointed out the apocalypse has already started, so what's to point ?
  11. Don't worry he is not going and I have not purchased a pack. Some aspects he could handle some I seriously doubt. He spent all week at summer camp outside the tent so going bag less would not be a problem if it not to cold, but still the most he has hiked is 4-5 miles. The kid could survive on trail mix, Cheerios and granola bars all year if you let him. Late October in Missouri could be 25-65 at night, who knows. Terrain is hilly but not much more than 200' ridges. He has a 4-5# 20 degree slumber jack mummy that he even uses in summer we just need a larger compression sack for it. Even I have a tough time stuffing it in there. Basically the boy is thin as a rail with 1% body fat, he has stamina but not much strength. He wants to do it and before middle school and all the books he has to carry put some stones in his school backpack. . Two other boys in his patrol are going but they are 100# and over. Just want to make sure I am not helicoptering him.
  12. Go to the craft store any get some foam wreath circles, paint and web strapping and make ring buoy hats. Your guards will easily identified from other program areas.
  13. I think you can find other ways to identify yourselves. Hats, neckers, wobbles, goggles.
  14. Our troop is planning a 2 night backpacking trip in a few weeks. I think the plan is to hike a mile or two in Friday, 8-10 Saturday and finish up Sunday morning. My son weighs 65lbs. He caries 13lbs to school, but that is only 1/2 mile each way. I think finding a pack that would fit him would be a challenge. His bag is nearly 5 lbs. I don't see how he can carry his share and keep it at 16 lbs without spending a fortune of gear. The other crossovers are 100lbs or more and are planning on going. One of them struggled a bit on a 3 mile hike last April on same terrain. Not my call. We will see how they do, but I think 5-8 mile day hike is a better option, it just might be the two of us though. I can't separate from the CPAP yet. What's your opinion BD ?
  15. Sorry - Not possible. Your BSA Council has no say in how a den is run financially. They can NOT dictate what can, or can not, be charged in dues at the Pack, or den, levels. BSA units (Pack/Troop/Team/Crew/Ship) are OWNED by their Chartering Organizations (CO). The CO agrees to use the BSA program, but their financials are their own. Bottom line - how would a council ever know what a Pack is charging for it's dues, much less a den? Just silly. I have a suspicion it is a CO or committee rule that is being blamed on Council. Sort of like a troop requiring a filed uniform while traveling and saying it is an insurance requirement. It is a good idea and I support it, but not an insurance requirement.
  16. Why was it necessary to split the friends up ? We try to add smaller dens if necessary and not break up existing ones. Friendly competition is good, rivalry is not. Look for games where cooperation is a goal.
  17. If I recall correctly this is the CM control freak and has a younger boy in two different packs as well, correct ? You can try and fight this battle with her and others have given good advise on how to do that. You also need to work with this person and need her to cooperate with you on certain issues. Her "bling fling" is primarily hurting her son and not yours, so I would be cautious in confronting her. Pick your battles. Her son will know he didn't earn the badges, your son will know he did.
  18. Some councils offer it as stand alone, some combine it with IOLS, some combine it with BALOO. I took it combines with BALOO. Some participants only showed up for the BALOO sections. I was told at the time that OWL was required to take the Webelos den camping separate from the pack, BALOO for the whole pack. Others on this board have pointed out that is not correct. How much longer are you going to be a Webelos Leader ? Are you planning on becoming a BS leader soon ?
  19. Welcome. At summer camp a troop from TN served the whole camp pulled pork, a welcome change from the dinning hall mess. Some of those boys had an exceptional mastery of knots as well.
  20. If mainstream Republicans are going along with them, then by definition they are not a minority, at least in the House of Representatives. There are probably very few Democrats who are completely unwilling to compromise on ACA - are they, too, "extremist ideologues"? But it's not outside the legal process. All spending bills originate in the House. That is not merely a Congressional rule -- it is a Constitutional one. Again, that the ACA is the law of the land, for now, does not at all imply that it can't be debated, defunded, revoked, etc. It wasn't that long ago (1974-1995) that a 55 mph speed limit was "the law of the land." But Sammy didn't shut down the government over it.
  21. You must never have witnessed a Teabagger Rally.
