  1. Thanks for reminding me about the cute girl moving thing. Been burned by that one many times. Need to clue my son in on that one, though he will likely fall for it.
  2. How is your council's climbing program set up ? In ours a leader goes to training but has to be certified by a staff member on open rock with a troop before he can lead on his own. Some would prefer to get qualified with another troop first so they can take the younger scouts to a tower before open rock. Contact your climbing chairman and see if there are some instructors that need qualification and and help you out.
  3. I started a CPAP thread. I can't answer the backcountry question. I can say we had an older relatively inactive scout attend an event last year and his mom let him set up his tent in the back of a pickup. It was at a state park and the ranger made him take it down off the truck. The ranger said the rule was to keep vagrants from camping out in their cars.
  4. This is a dedicated thread to discuss CPAPs and camping. Successes, failures and ideas. When I just did cubs a jump starter and my 12v machine worked fine. My new machine is 24V so i picked up a big marine battery at Wally World and use my inverter. Works but in efficient, heavy and only gets me two nights.
  5. Before I rework my system with a new machine or converter/inverter and a smaller battery I want to give these things a try. My current machine is really light but the 24V thing is a problem. http://www.proventtherapy.com/about-provent.php They are FDA approved and a nytimes piece said they are effective in about 70% of patients. Not covered by most insurance apparently, but might be worth a few bucks a night simply for the space/weight factor. I have thought about the laser surgery, but my ENT said it is a nasty 2 week recovery and again only effective in about 70% of cases. Jp, your truck battery is not really designed for this application. You will shorten its life by draining it like that. Having a deep cycle battery on hand is great for when the home power goes out. It doesn't happen often, but it sure is nice to be able to sleep when you have no power. As it appears I am not the only one with a CPAP, we need a CPAP thread to discuss ideas, solutions and failures.
  6. I have to Say CPAP, Followed By Power Converter How do you power yours ? Raccoons on a treadmill ? My new CPAP is 24V. I need to get 12 to 24 converter. Right now I use a marine battery, converter to AC then the power supply converts to 24V DC. stupid but it's what I have. Gets me two nights on one charge.
  7. That is all excellent. No we don't and should.
  8. I said this: "Besides, females sleep elsewhere in seperate campsites/areas" Um....what is the difference? It's seperate. A campsite can be on the other site of a trail or 15 feet away. And that's how you split hairs.... I think it was 300 ft, or something like that.
  9. Ash Wednesday was never a school holiday. We went to mass and then the nuns marched us right back to our desks to show us more pictures of aborted fetuses.
  10. Back in college late one night during exams week I was driving home in 10 below breezy weather. I had rotated my tires and not snugged them down tight enough and the lug nuts fell off and the tire slipped off lodging itself in the wheel well. The car was sitting to low to get the jack underneath. Two young men stopped and lifted my car up enough for me to get the jack under it. They were Jehovah Witnesses. The list of stuff they can't do is really long and scouts is one of them. I suspect this family is not very observant. Make sure they understand what scouts do and what is expected of a scout. Maybe there are less strict congregations. It seems most denominations come in many different flavors.
  11. Can you post links track and scat and plant guides ? Did you laminate yourself ?
  12. Try very inexpensive outdoor gear. Go to harbor freight. They often have good LED flashlights at great prices. Go to the scout shop. They have ferro rod firestarters for about $3 or less. A couple of these higher dollar treats will get the boys' attention. Great thoughts, but Mom might get a little peeved if on the way home Johnny starts up a sparkfest in the back of the mini van. Check with the parents on that one.
  13. I have heard of all kinds of methods such as little beads and such for rewards. I think it starts with the parents, if they don't care, the scout isn't going to care.
  14. Qwazse, any background on that ? Some pools the guards are a little whistle happy and it diminishes its effectiveness. You still need a method of alerting the down guards to issues. I haven't seen the BSA use turtles or other electronic alerts.
  15. Sound like a good unit leader-assigned leadership project to help your unit. "Go search the Internet for porn companies with sort of vanilla names". Yep, unfortunately I inherited my Kingdom when I stepped up to the PTO. As you have told me, not much I can do about it. The culture is there and the parents seem to like it that way. The SM seemed a little receptive to my concerns about do nothing PORs, we shall see. He still thinks that hotel room in a cave counts a camping night. Meanwhile still shopping.
  16. Was there ever any uniform insignia with a swastika on it ?
  17. You have a lot of valid concerns. The problem is rampant especially in summer camps. You need to realize that the SM has absolutely no control over the merit badge process. None. He can appeal to a scouts honor but that is it. He can report the problem to the district advancement chair, sounds like that is not going to happen. You can also report the problem. Will anything come of it ? Maybe, probably not. At least you have 15-17 year olds in your troop. The chorus will chime in here shortly, with GO FIND A NEW TROOP. Good luck.
  18. There are a ton of Internet Porn companies out there trying to raise their community profile. They are legal businesses.
  19. The reading skills of your average 11 year old Life Scout aren't what they used to be.
  20. I appreciate the goal, but as a parent if my son was forced to stay behind I would be out of that troop immediately.
  21. Good to see the are taking it well. They have a Kickstarter page. I am going to make a small donation.
  22. See 5 doctors and you will get 5 different diagnosis. Same with Councils. That why in a situation like this I would want a ruling from an executive so there is less chance for a surprise down the road.
  23. If you just can't get past cooking with rocks they sell trivets for them. I know a DL that used some bolts to hold a pan off the bottom. Though a trivet is best to keep a roast off the bottom. I don't know if its the best but the Dale Smith book has lots of tricks and great recipes. Some welding gloves, lid lifter and lid holder are handy accessories. The lid holder works great as a grate for the coffee pot as well.
