Yeah, why are you taking pictures of your wife with ugly old guys ? -
Cookware for Cub campouts/sleepovers
King Ding Dong replied to Grubdad's topic in Equipment Reviews & Discussions
So is cooking a hot dog on a stick or wrapping biscuit dough on a stick, but both are different and teach something. Your right cubs are not likely to put all those veggies in their eggs but maybe they will select one or two. At home you boil eggs or fry them in a pan. The point of camping is to do something different and maybe learn something along the way. I have not had ziplock bag leak or pop, just get most of the air out. Ever try the bacon and eggs in a brown paper sack method ? It works, maybe not the best results but it works. Why do it ? The scouts learn something and are amazed the bag didn't burst into flames. Tell them why it works and they just learned something about science few people know and expanded their knowledge. They might use that knowledge and think of something exceptional. Why is boiling water in a paper cup over hot coals a time honored campfire trick ? -

Camping / Sleeping Arrangements / Safe Scouting
King Ding Dong replied to comchair's topic in Issues & Politics
I have mentioned it on here before. I honestly laughed at Scouter who first told me about it. I like to call it the BSA No Marriage Rule. We can't have these kids seeing married people sleep in the same room together can we ? -

This is that fuzzy rule from GTSS that indicates, at least to me, that the BSA prefers parents or guardians with Webelos. "A Webelos Scout may participate in overnight den camping when supervised by an adult. In most cases, the Webelos Scout will be under the supervision of his parent or guardian. It is essential that each Webelos Scout be under the supervision of a parent-approved adult. Joint Webelos den/troop campouts including the parents of the Webelos Scouts are encouraged to strengthen ties between the pack and troop. Den leaders, pack leaders, and parents are expected to accompany the boys on approved trips." -
What can pack funds be spent on.

While I agree the money needs to be spent on the boys, we also try to have about $1-1.5 K in the bank. This is mostly to cover the expenses in the fall until the registration fees come in. We try to be very flexible with the parents and give them until about November 1. We also provide the books, neckers and slides each year. If we zeroed out the bank account on June 1 we would not have anything for summer activities, recruiting or the beginning of fall. Parents are fairly tapped out with clothes and school supplies in aug/sept. To the best of my knowledge we have never spent pack money on adult food and drink. We will pay training fees but not the food. I don't ask for reimbursement but some do. -
Adult Registration - DOB Mandatory?

Curious indeed. I have to keep my relationship with Twinkie the Kid a secret from the BSA. -

Interesting point about the allergies. I have never been all that comfortable with the no washing cast iron thing, but I suppose if you heat it well enough all the buggies die. -

And with changing marriage laws state by state, and the issue of states recognizing marriages from other states, this gets real complicated. Moose knows there are rules but can't find them....I wonder why. -
Sounds like a great idea if you have the manpower. Though security could be an issue. Now that the lowes and Home Depot are in on the business having competitive prices will be tough. I don't see many Boy Scout lots anymore. Last time I went to one was about 10 years ago they were priced well out of my budget.

Camping / Sleeping Arrangements / Safe Scouting
King Ding Dong replied to comchair's topic in Issues & Politics
My Council has or had a rule that married couples could not sleep in the same tent. I have never found it in writing and have been told it is no longer in force, but some district level scouters still believe it exists. Obviously there was a incident once upon a time and someone had to make a rule about it. -

I know some wolves, bears and webs that are not perfectly able to sleep in a tent on their own. Not unless they are told there is a bear in the area and they better keep quiet. -
I hadn't looked at it like that before, but I can see tension when one group or another claims the BSA as "theirs".

Adult Registration - DOB Mandatory?
King Ding Dong replied to evillama's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Commies ? Not likely. Fascists ? Maybe. Does requiring the scout to carry and produce his Toten chip and Firem'n Chit count as "your papers please" ? I understand your point but the cat is out of the bag on the DOB thing. I show my name and DOB to every time I buy a bottle of wine. I routinely lie about my DOB, employer, phone number, email etc when it doesn't really matter. -
Interesting. I suppose the IDF doesn't lay down its arms on Shabbat. Can you flush a toilet ? That water and waste goes somewhere into the environment. What about medical devices such as a CPAP ? Are there work exceptions for instance a doctor or you work at a power plant ? In some ways it truly does make it a day of rest.

Adult Registration - DOB Mandatory?
King Ding Dong replied to evillama's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Like the Air Force servicemen that would not provide their checking account number for a house rental application. Every check the man has ever written has it printed on it. A google search will give your age at minimum. They are hiding something. You can't win them all. -
Adult Registration - DOB Mandatory?
King Ding Dong replied to evillama's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I can see two reasons that information is required. 1. Background check 2. Know if you are 18 or 21 (I would hope you are 21 with a six year old). The only place I know BSA makes your DOB available is to the unit "key 3" on the new myscouting.org site and on the charter documents. I don't believe it is publicized. They unit may keep this information in advancement tracking software (we don't). It is also required on the medical forms or any overnight. Are you registering them as leaders ? The ScoutParent program has been discontinued. While I also understand their trepidation, Scouting is not for everyone. I wouldn't let an adult in my unit that would not disclose this very basic information. -

I could see some cookies and coffee maybe, but dinner ? That's nuts. Two ways to head this off. The COR can squash this fast and so can the parents. Child care can be a problem. We have been lucky to always have a older sibling willing to watch the little ones. Never paid, they do it because its the right thing to do. Let them have their electronics and they will keep quite for an hour. -

Wife bought a set of stainless cookware a couple of years ago. Works well enough and best to deglaze with water right when done cooking. Barkeepers Friend and those stainless pads work well. Having said that she mostly uses a nonstick pan and replaces it every year or two. SAMs or Costco usually have decent deals on a big sauté pan. Jblake give the barkeeps friend and those silver stainless pads a try. I have had success with some pretty crunchy mistakes. -
Once the kids came along just don't have time to babysit wood or charcoal. Have a Bradley analog modified with an extra 500w element. Custom Auber PID digital dual probe controller. Elcheapo hood set up in my garage and dryer vent out the window. Love to cold smoke steaks for an hour of oak before grilling. The Jim Beam oak is real good. The trick with chicken or turkey is to cut way back on the smoke time and use apple. Yeah we should start a new thread in open discussion. I really want to expand into salmon. Love to hear your advise.

Are there too many Training Courses?
King Ding Dong replied to Sqyire21's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Cash cow ? Not in my council $25 for IOLS ? They give us a binder with the Scoutmaster handbook and a bunch of PowerPoint notes. Um, that kind of profit isn't going to pay my sewer bill. I can't speak to Wood badge, but if the feed me for 6 days, you might cover my water bill for a couple of weeks in July. -
Lol. The requests or McDonald's have gone way down once I banned happy meals. All they really want is the crappy toy.

Trail Life confused over who they are?????
King Ding Dong replied to Basementdweller's topic in Issues & Politics
Ah maybe someone that can explain this to me. The majority of my education was in Catholic schools. How can a person be married three times and be a Catholic ? The whole Newt Gingrich thing really had me confused. The Nuns and Jesuits obviously did not explain all the loopholes to us. Once and done was the rule we were taught. 18 years on Monday.
