Very interesting. My now gone step father was orthodox (though not practicing) and he told me some interesting stories about prayer. He volunteered for Viet Nam very early and credits his chants with keeping him alive. He claimed while on guard duty at night he would sit on a stump at the edge of camp and chant all night and the VC would get very close and listen to him, he could hear them moving around, but could never see them. They recognized it as religous an left him alone (while chanting). Different take on reverent.

My friend whose son just joined a pack as a Webelos is a good example of this. They are spiritual but not religious and do not belong to an church. The den leader is insisting that every scout earn the religious medal for requirement 8 because 'that is how we do it in our pack.' So the family has a choice, pull out of scouting or join a church to fulfill the requirement. Neither accomplishes the goal of the requirement. I see it as just another way BSA is used to support discrimination. Because of the minimum 25 chartered units rule and other issues not every religion has an emblem. I have a hard time with it. My kids are smarter than me so they don't have as much trouble. From what I have see it takes your average scout a couple of years to get the cub stuff down. I am sure they could get it with support at home, but that is not common.

What outrage BD ? Please justify your accusations. I see no outrage against their beliefs. I see criticism of the way the program is administered by many of the units. Some of our founding fathers were Christian, not all. One would be hard pressed to call Jefferson or Franklin "Christian".

Moose, I think it is going to take a bit more than this to move those districts. There are many more than 80 that are deep red now. However if they default on the debt and plunge the world economy into depression, I think their problems will be much larger than reelection. If it comes to that point I honestly believe our experiment in democracy will have failed.
