  1. Just got back from my first weekend of W.B. WE3-28-03 and this came up as a trivia question and yes when out of uniform the scout uses the scout sign to cross his heart.
  2. Bats-Both Throws Baseball-Right Football-Both Writes-Right Votes- for best qualified candidate
  3. tks for the info Bob unfortunatly I do not have that book but will very soon. Ron WE3-28-03 Owl Patrol
  4. I referenced my SM handbook but was unable to see that merit badges are either not reccomended for troop meetings or shouldn't be done at troop meetings, please advise so I can bring this up.
  5. Dont get me wrong guys...I'm all for following the book, maybe the real problem does lie with not having done a troop JLT, and not having the SPL following the program and the 7 part meeting planning. Years of doing it a certain way takes time to change I'm doing by best to get that going as well as recruiting, Wood Badge and my upcoming ordeal.
  6. Bob, 1st off no one told them this is a good way to operate a troop. This is my opionion only but I think they are quite bored of tying knots and wrapping sprained ankles, do I agree with doing merit badges during meetings not so sure but I do not impress that opionion on them. Were going thru some challenging times with no JLT trained scouts.
  7. The scouts have decided to do merit badges during Troop meetings, but it's done as a side acitivity one-on-one with a counsler while another activity is going on. I have read several posts that you shouldnt do merit badges during meetings but this is the boys decision.
  8. OGE..ok I'm going to church now to pray for that....Unfortunatly the game isn't really set up to go by the Scout Law and Oath. But hey why not put a new twist on it and be honest with everyone.
  9. Packsaddle-just like you said "most" support scouting on this forum he's just trying to find the one person. Who's to know if he's looking elsewhere also.
  10. Bob, Unfortunatly anyone in uniform is going to be seen as a rep of the organization. It is quite clear what Craneface is looking for. Instead of looking at the positives of the program ie: how it turns youth around that may be faced in the wrong idrection or how taking their Lifesaving merit badge actually DID save someones life He clearly wants to dig up some dirt and publish it, he'll probably put his own little twist on it. I would like to know what fish wrap he writes for. What's his real intent?
  11. OGE...I'll make a point of reading it..I start Woodbadge next Monday
  12. Looks like I'm off to the scout shop to get the latest version. Please if anyone else has experiences or advice..
  13. This is great I can't wait. I'll take a patrol (tribe) of 1st class scouts over anyone they can thro at them.. So what's your luxury item? Mine would be a field book.
  14. tks just wondering thought that maybe you were farther north we might meet up sometime
  15. What's the best and most effective way of doing this within the troop? An old Scoutmaster friend of mine passed on to me a video and some literature on performing the class but I'm not sure if it's the latest-greatest it was printed in 1990 if that helps. What have been your experiences? What would have done different? How does "White Stag" differ? I was kicking around the idea of putting on the class once new Webelos crossed. It has been at least 3 years since the last course.
  16. johnsed...I agree with what you are saying..The dad is well within his rights to sleep in the same tent as his son and of course I'm ok with that I will also just need to make sure that their is no interference with the SPL or with the program in general.
  17. Tks for all the advice. We use patrol sites seperate from the adults which would probably be the only suggestion I can make for him not to sleep in the same tent. Granted it may be a personal/medical issue. Once his son gets with his patrol and he feels comfortable I think Dad will be bunking with the other adults and playing dominos.
  18. We have been approached by a Dad (was a prior eagle in our troop) that is interested in having his on cross-over into our troop but made the statement " I will sleep in the same tent as my son on campouts" I have check in the G2SS and have found that he is within his rights to do so under "Adult Requirements for Trips and Outings" Item 6 "When staying in tents, no youth will stay in the ten of an adult other than his or her parent of guardian" Any ideas on how to disway him?
  19. You really can't promote this enought what else builds patrol unity. My son's patrol did this recently it was not camping but a patrol outing just the same.
  20. Lets see if I can answer some of these questions.. Scout is within 6 months proably less than that from becoming 18 Has not attend an outing for at least a year Has attend meetings only when his dad (committee member) has to do a board of review and when he does attend he hides in the corner to talk to other older scouts Just turned life scout 7 months before bday (guessing here but will ddouble check) PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS: I have been in the troop now for approx 2.5 - 3yrs and have yet to see him exhibit any leadership skills..sure he could have done it without
  21. I like the mentoring...How about training a new SPL and what he can and should expect from his ASPL's and then the new SPL train his repl and so on and so on..
