  1. I agree with the others. As long as you keep showing up, they have no incentive to find a replacement....which is the COR's responsibility, not yours.
  2. The use of Mentor Pins is a personal decision by the Eagle candidate. One pin is included in the presentation kit, for him/her to do what they want, so it needs to be a special and personal choice. Indeed, the entire ECOH ceremony is at the discretion of the Eagle and their family.
  3. My District had many awards available besides the District Award of Merit, such as "Cubmaster of the Year", "Scoutmaster of the Year", etc. The problem was getting meaningful nominations. Unless you went to Roundtable monthly, or the annual District Dinner, no one was aware of them. I always bought my own service stars, as no one knew my extensive history in Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, and Scouter. And in my observation, no one wore them anyway, so it was kind of a waste to purchase them with unit funds.
  4. Membership in BSA is at the discretion of the Scout Executive, after being approved by the CO and CC. Membership can be revoked for any reason...or no reason. You just get a letter from Council saying you are no longer a member. That being said, if I had been the SM using the phone in the bar, and got "fired", you would have heard about it on the local evening news.
  5. Well, if you follow that pattern...Motorboating.
  6. This is an issue that the Lodge Advisors should have recognized and remedied. The "Buddy System" is not just for swimming.
  7. Let's not lose sight of the fact that the Religious Awards are NOT BSA awards. ANY young person can earn them. The Awards should be earned by the Scout within the environment of his/her family and faith leader, and should NOT be a part of the Scouting program, as I have seen some units do. Scouting is, and should remain, a non-denominational activity. BSA allows the medals and square knot to be worn on the uniform, and that should be the extent of the Unit/Council's involvement.
  8. Again, clarity seems to evade most BSA statements. Does the adjective "singular" modify "overnight" or "experience"? If the intent is to spend only one night, then say that. Or, "Cub camping is limited to one night per outing." And in all my years of unit service, Council never kept tabs on when units were camping or for how long, except when a tour permit was required or a Council property reservation was needed. With no enforcement, people tend to do what they want, when they want, whether there is intent to disobey or not...yes, even in Scouting.
  9. So I interpret this to mean if you willfully ignore BSA rules and policy, such as the G2SS, you are not covered. I believe this is being discussed in another thread.
  10. I believe, that, like any insurance company, their attorneys will seek out ANY excuse to lessen their obligation to pay damages. Those who choose to ignore rules and guidelines and "reasonable" decision making do so at their own peril.
  11. In my opinion, BSA has always had difficulty expressing what they mean in plain English. I once volunteered to be a proofreader for National, since I had a career in writing, reading and interpreting Federal safety and health regulations and technical policy. Got no response.
  12. From the item description: This Cub Scout uniform short-sleeve button down is an option for part of the required official uniform for Tiger, Wolf and Bear Cub Scouts. Since when did a uniform become "required"???
  13. Curious as to why just us males are assumed to be pedophiles? I am also amazed that the "equity" warriors are not demanding that their daughters are also not penalized for not registering for Selective Service. It seems to me that we only want "equity" when it agrees with our agenda.
  14. One of the ASM should immediately become acting SM. Then the COR searches for a replacement.
  15. The prudent church Treasurer would insist on an annual audit of Unit accounts and the Unit committee should welcome it. Keep everything transparent and above board. In addition to "annual", an audit should also occur whenever the Unit Treasurer duties change hands.
  16. Well, I don't see any white robes and hoods or a burning cross. That would be my first clue.
  17. Doesn't that work both ways? And should I no longer agree to wear the big sombrero as they sing "Feliz Cumpleanos" to me at my local Mexican restaurant?
  18. This was covered when I was teaching Cub Scout Basic Leader Training. There are positions for "Committee Chairman" and "Member of COmmittee". That does not include the CM, DL and ADL positions. Stay in your lanes.
  19. Back in the Dark Ages, when B-P was a sub-leftenant, our AOL crossovers got that...the AOL patch, rank card and certificate. The receiving troop usually provided a troop necker and slide. Quite sufficient in my estimation. Wish them well and send them on their way. I guarantee the adults see this as way more important than the Scouts do.
  20. Yes, the "Good Ole Boy/Girl" network is alive and well....
  21. Fully agree. I always believed that our job was to provide the OPPORTUNITY to succeed and advance. Some of my Scouts made Eagle, and some didn't (including my own two sons). It was entirely their decision what they did with that opportunity.
