Hey E! Sounds like your at your whits end. If the FD isn't doing anyting about this guy, what about the SE? An old friend told me if there are problems, the a professional should handle professionals and a volunteer handles the volunteers.

dodaddy wrote "Sadly this is not the case in my current lodge but I and some other old timers are trying to get it back." Each lodge is unique when it comes to the tap out. If the youth like what they are doing now then let them be. Don't forget that the OA is a youth led organization, and old timers like me are suppose to sit back and watch these young men grow.

Bob, Good post, but I believe your mistatken on the "IF you maintain your troop registration". Venturers can be members of the OA without maintaing troop registration. To be become a member of the OA you must be elected through a BSA Troop or Team. But once your in you can be a member of the OA by only being registered with a Crew. I have one of the Vice Chiefs of our Lodge in our crew and he isn't registerd with a troop. However I could be mistaken. Where did you get your refernce? YIS Cary P. Advisor Crew 805.

Ok time for me to chime in! These are MY opinions. If you agree great, if you don't that's great too. Just don't start a "war" with my words. Background in case you didn't know: I served 20 years in the military (Air Force) and pretty much been there and done that. We are doing great things in Iraq. Some of you may not like us over there but we are there. I've spoken to several young soldiers returning and they give you completetly different story then our bias left sided media tells you. As one 20 year old soldier told me, "We are no longer fighting a war with Iraq, we are fighting a war in Iraq. Against people who have no reguard for freedom, or other people's rights." This kid told me about how the Americans are helping out the Iraqis kind of brought a tear to ole Sarge's eyes. We will be out of Iraq once the Iraqis can defend themselves, and this takes time. The military has a job to do and they are doing an awesome job. ok enough of that. As for the yellow ribbons, Display them if you want, don't if you want. Just leave people's private property alone. God bless America, God bless our President, and God bless you. Yours in Service Cary P MSgt, USAF (Ret)

While reading this post I almost sprayed coffee all over my monitor to hold back the laughter. May God bless Bob Dole!

Ask what your son wants. But I would wear the uniform. Manyirons wore his uniform to his son's Eagle COH, and everything was centered around Manyirons Jr, with no distractions.

It's all about program. But some advertising couldn't hurt, except in the pocketbook. I'm advisor for a crew and this unit has exploded membershipwise. We have about 30 youth and a third of the group is female. We started back in Nov and the youth applications are still coming in. What's the secret? Program. Our program is simple. We do something once a month and that's it. That's what the youth want. Here's what we've done so far. Nov 04 Vets Day Parade help with CO. Had about 20 youth. Jan 05 Weekend Cabin Camping. Had 25 youth. Feb 05 Family Potluck. 25 youth and some family members. 60 total people. Mar 05. Indoor rockclimbing. Had about 15 youth. All Crew adults have gone through Venturing Fast Start and YP. So the training is coming along. We're still going through growing pains but they are minor. As for the Venturing side of Scouts, Keep it simple, keep it fun, follow the guidelines, and they will come.

My crew's number is 805 since our CO is VFW post 805. Our council has unique quasi numbering system that goes by what district your in. Of course I've seen a few new units that aren't going by the old numbering system.

Stick with Dad. Shouldn't be any confusion. I'm still new to this Mr stuff. Spent 20 years either being called Airman or Sergeant P. I kind of like being called Cary by everyone now, except my kids who call me "Daddy." Interesting side note, have one youth in my crew that calls his father "Pops". Any other different Dad names out there?

I was going to join this dissucssion but didn't want to get into some mud slinging. Just remember folks that God loves you. -
Sorry to hear you leaving. This forum isn't perfect, Scouting isn't perfect. As with real life Everyone is unique. You have to take the good with the bad. I think I've learned something about Scouting from just about everybody out here. Some things in this forum gets my goat, but I don't let it get to me. I ignore the horse hockey, weed out the unimportant stuff, and digest the important stuff. Just my thoughts and opinions, You can use them or throw them away, no harm no foul, that's what makes America great.

Torveaux wrote "I don't know how you behave in public, so I cannot compare the two, but I hope you don't embarrass yourself or Scouting like this guy did" I don't act like a drunken fool while sober. Apperently this guy crossed the line. Take Eamonn's advise, sound like the right thing to do. YIS purcelce

interesting. Just my obsersavtions you may be too picky. Of course I wasn't at the game to make an informed opinion. I act like that at ball games and I stay sober at the games. If he was drinking and being rude to people that's one thing and is totally against my and the scouts set of standards. But if he was just having a good time with his den and not bothering anybody then there is nothing you can do but accept it and be glad he isn't a part of your pack. While in uniform I've donned goofy hats, costumes, and have blown horns, cheered, booed (in good fun) the other team. Heck I've done this at Scout functions. If you ever get a chance to go to an OA function you will see youth and adults doing the same thing. It's all in good fun.

This is my third year as a FOS presenter and this is what I do. (Some people may not like this and others will...the main thing is that it works). 1. Review the official script. 2. Throw away the official script. 3. Talk from your heart about the Scouting program and use official script stuff when needed if you feel it's needed. 4. Never talk about unit goals in front of unit leaders. I make the FOS presentation entertaining. My opening line is "If Mr Scoutmaster/Cubmaster will write me a check for 1000 dollars you won't have to hear me talk." This breaks the ice and you get a few laughs. I hate using the "suggested amount you should give is..." Instead I use, "please give what your heart tells you". Keep the presentation to 5 minutes. Hope this helps.

Bill of Non-Rights We, the sensible people of the United States, in an attempt to help everyone get along, restore some semblance of justice, avoid any more riots, keep our nation safe, promote positive behavior, and secure the blessings of debt-free liberty to ourselves and our great-great-great grandchildren, hereby try one more time to ordain and establish some common sense guidelines for the terminally whiny, guilt-ridden, and delusional. We hold these truths to be self-evident: That a whole lot of people were confused by the Bill of Rights and are so dim that they require a Bill of No Rights. ARTICLE I You do not have the right to a new car, big screen TV, or any other form of wealth. More power to you if you can legally acquire them, but no one is guaranteeing anything. ARTICLE II You do not have the right to never be offended. This country is based on freedom, and that means freedom for everyone, not just you. You may leave the room, turn the channel, express a different opinion, etc., but the world is full of idiots and probably always will be. ARTICLE III You do not have the right to be free from harm. If you stick a screwdriver in your eye, learn to be more careful. Do not expect the tool manufacturer to make you and all your relatives independently wealthy. ARTICLE IV You do not have the right to free food and housing. Americans are the most charitable people to be found, and will gladly help anyone in need. But we are quickly growing weary of subsidizing generations of professional couch potatoes who achieve nothing more than the creation of another generation of professional couch potatoes. ARTICLE V You do not have the right to free health care. That would be nice, but from the looks of public housing, we're just not interested in government-run health care. ARTICLE VI You do not have the right to physically harm other people. If you kidnap, rape, intentionally maim, or kill someone, don't be surprised if the rest of us want to see you fry in the electric chair. ARTICLE VII You do not have the right to the possessions of others. If you rob, cheat, or coerce away the goods or services of other citizens, don't be surprised if the rest of us get together and lock you away in a place where you still won't have the right to a big-screen color TV or a life of leisure. ARTICLE VIII You don't have the right to demand that our children risk their lives in foreign wars to soothe your aching conscience. We hate oppressive governments and won't lift a finger to stop you from going to fight if you'd like. However, we do not enjoy parenting the entire world and do not want to spend so much of our time battling each and every little tyrant with a military uniform and a funny hat. ARTICLE IX You don't have the right to a job. All of us want all of you to have one, and will gladly help you along in hard times. But we expect you to take advantage of the opportunities of education and vocational training laid before you to make yourself useful. ARTICLE X You do not have the right to happiness. Being an American means that you have the right to pursue happiness -- which by the way, is a lot easier if you are unencumbered by an overabundance of idiotic laws created by those of you who were confused by the Bill of Rights.

Amen katydid! As you stated the only changes are Chartered Organizations. Scouting will still flourish on military bases. Let these folks who want to litigate go for it. Scouting will prevail. As a retired military dude, I salute you and all those military folks (this includes active duty, spouses, retired, and supporters of our military) who support the greatest youth organization in the country.

There are quite a few programs for youth in the BSA. The three "traditional" branches are Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturing. Varsity Scouting follows along the lines of Boy Scouts, except the units are known as Teams instead of Troops. They are geared toward sports. Varsity Scouts can still earn the Boys Scout ranks. I've only Seen Varsity teams in LDS churches. The Order of the Arrow is Boy Scouts Honor Society. You have to be a Boy Scout or Varsity Scout to become a member. The only way you can become a member is to be elected by your Troop or Team members. Venturing is a co-ed program for youth ages 14 to 20. The units are called crews. A crew's program may be geared toward high adventure, hobbies, youth ministries, community service, (the posibilities are endless). Sea Scouts fall under the Venturing program. Best place to check out the details is at www.scouting.org.

251scout, do a google search for BSA 101 campout. I found it a few years ago online and used it for a March campout when the troop had 10 new scouts crossover.
