As I'm typing this post, I've got my uniforms and other camp clothes in the washer. In the morning I'm headed off to Camp Joy. Sat and Sun in between camp sessions Crew 805 will be holding an overnight Beach party. Swimming and bbqing near the waterfront. I'm looking at 20+ youth attending. Got a call from the Crew Pres telling me to bring out more youth applications. About 9 Crew members are on camp staff this year and word got out about this weekend so, I'll be having a few more folks joining up this weekend. After the Crew breaks camp on Sunday morning, I move my tent to staff row and give my services to the camp as a camp commissioner. Camp Commish's "tradition" is to make sure all program areas have water every morning. Also looking forward to helping out where I'm needed, First Class Trail, Waterfront (I was last year's Aq Dir). Since I pulled a good one on the Program Director at Spring Fellowship, I may end up on garbage can cleaning detail. Best part of next week will be visiting with friends that I haven't seen in a few months. Worst part of next week will be having to spend a whole week in the camp with Manyirons .... just kidding Many...you know I love you!!!! Actually I'm looking forward to spending some time with Manyirons troop. They are a great band of scouts and scouters. See you guys in about 10 days.

SM discouraging Summer Camp Merit Badges
purcelce replied to goodkidsmom's topic in Advancement Resources
Sounds like your SM has good intention, but going about it the wrong way. I would leave it up to the boys to deside what they want to take for merit badges. Summer Camp should be for fun, not a merit badge college. -
Sounds like a good idea!

I plan on hitting ManyIron's function. Just down the street from me. If you don't plan on doing anything special for M Day, head to your local cemetary, park, or town square. Most have a memorial for all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Say a little prayer there. purcelce, MSgt, USAF (ret)

gift etiquette for Eagle ceremony attendance
purcelce replied to tonkamom's topic in Open Discussion - Program
There is no gift etiquette at Eagle COH's. However, I choose to give the young man something. These's gifts have ranged from OA patches, neckerchief slides, Eagle Scout bumper sticker, and cards. If you want to give a little something that's ok, if not, that's ok too. Main thing is that you and your son are there. -
you can find GSUSA listed in the phone book. Call the local GSUSA council and they will give you the contacts for Girls Scout Troops in your area. Here in my area, The Girl Scouts have summer day camps and that's about it. Troop meetings are generally held during the school year. My daughter just started her third year as a brownie.

Greetings All, I was driving around town the other day and noticed all the yellow ribbons on all the car. It got me to thinking how do I support the troops. Well I pray for our military members that are in harms way, but I know I can do a little better. Well I found a website that answered my prayers and how I can do better to support the troops. The website is http://www.anysoldier.com . This site tells you how you can send care packages, and letters to those who are in harms way. Check it out it's fantastic it gives you all the information you need. Now I plan on sending out three to four care packages out this week. For you folks that live near me. If you would like to send out a care package to the troops but don't want to run to Wal-Mart and buy a bunch of stuff, let me know and I can get things like pens, paper, toiletries, and other things that the Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen need and want in the field. Just send me an email and I'll get it to you. Thanks for your time. God Bless! Cary Purcell

Here's a little story that I had a problem with "council" earlier this year. This is a reprint from another post I did earlier this year. I think relates to this post. The funny thing was I made the problem, not council. Last year I gave to scouts til it "hurt". I did about 14 FOS presentations and worked the phones for donations. Was Lodge Advisor to the Secretary. Gave time as UC and Assistant SM. Was asked to be on Outdoor Leader Training Staff. Started a new Venturing Crew that took off. Worked 9 weeks for the council camps as Aquatics director and gave my pay back to the council. Chaired the District fall camporee and got it going. District Commissioner asked me to take over an ADC slot and I did. When the district dinner came along in Feb. said to myself, "You should be a shoe in for the District Award of Merit" My name wasn't called and I was in shock. Those who got deserved it, and I congratulated them and left the dinner with a little disappointment and a bad taste in my mouth. When I got home I started looking at some scouting pictures of the past year and saw how much fun the youth had around me. Then I had a "vision". I'm not in Scouting for me; I'm in it for the youth. I started to remember the many youth faces that I touched throughout the year. I remembered some of the lines from the youth: "Thanks for making Lifesaving merit badge fun". "The only reason I come to OA functions is because you make it fun". "I wish you were my Scoutmaster." "I would of drop out of scouts if it wasn't for the awesome time I had at the waterfront." "Give me an application, I want to join your crew." So I didn't get my pat on the back at the dist dinner. I got my pat on the back by seeing how many youth, directly and indirectly; I had an influence (a good influence) on in 2004.

Bob that was an awesome answer!!!!!

I say go with it on a meeting night. It just might motivate those life scouts that are close to being "Life Scouts for life". Also the Eagle Scout should be able to have his COH where and when he wants it. If you feel it will hamper the troop meeting. Attempt to have your SPL taylor the meeting to just last 30 minutes after the coh. I think it can be done.

Two District Chairmen With Different Ideas.
purcelce replied to Eamonn's topic in Camping & High Adventure
Sounds like this Dist Chair needs some serious schooling on how the BSA program works. OGE said it best " District and Council events supplment the unit program, they are not the unit program." Send this guy my way for a weekend with my crew. My youth will get him steered in the right direction. -
Sounds like your on the right path to showing the proper patrol method. Keep it up

Very informative post.

All I can say is that life stinks. But you look at this as a learning experience and move on. Here's a little story. Last year I gave to scouts til it "hurt".
