  1. good to go. Well got to pack for the weekend. Taking the crew to camp Van tommorow to staff our Council's Webelos Outdoor Weekend. (This message has been edited by purcelce)
  2. Jer, Sounds like you've got an awesome program! You are definately busting at the seams. Sounds like your DE is really wanting to help you instead of trying to just start another unit for the bean counters. I would go with your "sister Pack" idea. Get a good CM and CC and have the "new pack" do things with your pack and then cut the cord when you and the other involve think the new pack can go solo. Building new units is a challenge and rewarding. Why don't you move over here to Belleville... I need a good UC Good luck and see ya on the grid iron or the base.
  3. hmmm...DE suggested you split the pack. I ran into this situation about two years ago. At Scott AFB about 5 years ago the base had 2 packs. One pack folded and the other one thrived. In 2002 the pack got a whole lot of boys signed up at SNFS. I was ADC and the DE suggested we start a new pack. I had reservations because the other pack had just folded and the thriving pack needed den leaders. We didn't start a new pack, but the triving pack just added a few more dens, got some awesome den leaders, and put on a great program. If you get some gung ho people in the key posistions t

United Methodist Committee on Relief http://gbgm-umc.org/umcor/ American Red Cross http://www.redcross.org/ Salvation Army http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/ A local tv station here even had a telethon last night. God be with these folks.
  7. Stop avoiding the speech and just do it. Once you've had the speech, you've done your done your job. No more guilt feelings, and no more angry mrs. on your back Thinking back many many moons ago, I remember what motivated me to finish my Eagle. Way back in 1981 at the begining of my sophmore year, my Troop cranked out Eagles (We were not an Eagle mill or mb factory). I think we had a 75% rate of making Eagle and we made it young. This work of art was at the hands of the best SM in the world Mr Harry L. Harry never said get off your butt and do this or that. He used peer presure h
  8. Open drawer. Pull out gun. Insert bullet in gun.... Oh how I love the Issues and Politcs threads... Before you guys jump down my throat I'm throwing down my "Freedom of Opinion" card. Now back to your regularly scheduled debate...
  9. CAScouter, If the kid has completed the requirements then it's your obligation as a scoutmaster to do the conference. During the conference you can address the "problem areas". We can't add or subtract to the requirements. Eagle Scouts are not perfect. I'm an Eagle Scout and I've done quite a few things that broke parts of the Scout Oath and Law. That's being human. We learn from our mistakes and try to do better the next time around. I think you answered your question with your quote " know that with time, this 14 year old boy will most likely grow up to become a p
  10. Class a, Class b, Class c, No class, Class dismissed. Field Uniform, Field Dress, Service Dress, Play Dress up. Activity uniform, Passive uniform, Uniformity. Oh how my head hurts... Remember...we are here for the youth. Turn your energies on how you can better the youth in your unit. Instead of wasting time debating over stuff that nobody will ever agree upon. (Uniform police please forgive me)
  11. imho gerbers are junk. Leatherman all the way. I have used both extensivly in the field when I was in the AF and the leatherman beats the gerber hands down.
  12. Sounds like a good time. Last weekend at our crew meeting we had a thunder storm come through. So of the kids started playing in the rain. You can see some them in action at http://groups.msn.com/BSACrew805
  13. Last weekend was crew meeting and yearly planing. This weekend was OA Fall Ordeal and I played elangomat. And to top things off I just got back from a Eagle COH that had four getting the medal. I just looked at my calendar for the rest of the year. 6 weekend camping trips, 3 crew meetings, 4 roundtables, 4 commish meetings, 2-3 venturing council meetings...heck the list goes on. Bring it on...It's great! If it wasn't, why do it? As Barry says... I love this Scouting stuff!
  14. Scouters, Thought I would share a little story with you that happened to me to day. I just came back from an Eagle Court of Honor. I've been to quite a few but this one had me teary eyed. Four Eagles had a combined COH. After all the ceremony each Eagle Scout said a few words. But two of the speeches touched me the most. I've known the two young men for a few years and I considered an honor for them to invite me to share their day in the sun. The first one was a young man that I know. After thanking his parents, adult leaders, friends, he said a special thanks to me, a
  15. Sounds pretty cool...will have to check it out. Just make sure you clean up after your planning meeting See you Sunday. purcelce
  16. I haven't seen any bsa magnets, but BSA does make some pretty good decals. I have the raised US flag with "Boy Scouts of America" written underneath the flag emblem. I had looked for two months for a flag decal but while wondering the isles of walmart. the bx, and other stores I was heartbroken, because not one of the decales was a plain flag. About a month ago at the Scout shop I saw one that fit my needs. Good luck on your quest.
  17. Good ideas there Cubmaster Jerry. Sounds like your pack is fun. Too bad you ain't around my part of the woods. I'll be looking for a cub pack in three years when my son comes of age.
  18. Quick question for the experts. I have a youth in my crew who has completed Star requirements in a troop but needs Conference and Board of Review, wants to do this through the crew. He's not very active with his troop. Anybody else run into this situation? My plan is and speak off line with the Troop SM. I think I'm right by stating that the requirements have been met and I can go ahead with conf and BOR. Just need a little feedback. Main thing is I don't want to get into a pi$$ing contest with troop leaders. I've already had a few run ins in this dept.
  19. Here's some interesting stuff to fan the flames of this fire. From Guide to Safe Scouting. "Two-deep leadership. Two registered adult leaders or one registered leader and a parent of a participant, one of whom must be 21 years of age or older, are required on all trips and outings. The chartered organization is responsible for ensuring that sufficient leadership is provided for all activities. " To me that states you must have two leaders for all scout activities, whether it be troop, patrol, den, pack, or crew. Personally if I was a SM I would never approve a patrol camp
  20. Just recently found out an old friend of mine hangs out here on the forums. A special howdy to Cubmaster Jerry.
  21. Just sit down and have a 5-10 minute chat with him, about how close he is, how you know a few older folks who have regregted not getting Eagle, and how Eagle Scouts are looked highly upon in the world. All you can do is advise. It's up to him to be motivated to finish his Eagle.
  22. Try Camp Joy near Carlyle IL in Okaw Valley Council. http://www.okawbsa.org
