  1. Rich Text Format (RTF) is fully compatible with MS-WORD (Windows and Mac versions), from Office 95 onward for Windows, and certainly from Office 2003 for Mac. I've had both and used both.
  2. Nick, that's not the best attitude to have. You never know that one of the folks here might actually be a certified Eagle Guest in your District. Anyway, whether you have a Philmont stock leather belt, if someone going to PTC tooled you one, or you have a nylon Philmont belt, wear it with pride
  3. I'm confused. When, as a volunteer, I get sent on a buying run, either Ranger or the Reservation Director gives me the appropriate credit card or store card, and it goes directly on the Council account.
  4. What Eagle92 said. This is a youth program; we adults are in a support role. If you want to introduce SM and CC to the Board of your Chartered Partner in a business meeting, that might be appropriate.
  5. I won't say that improving First Aid training in the youth program is something that should not be be done. We have a tool in the toolbox, though: The First Aid Merit Badge. It's an Eagle requirement, and has been for over 40 years. If National wants to raise standards for this MB, then that's what should be done; not adding another course to the mix. I agree that Venturing recognitions require additional First Aid beyond the scope of the Boy Scout program merit badge, and that the National High Adventure bases should require WFA as a condition of participation. Further, January 1 is now the normal, usual, and reasonable date for new requirements: Look at the new HB: Provisions in it take effect Jan 1, 2010. Something does not add up here. I think I'll look at this topic again in January, and again next March
  6. We are talking about children here. We want them to grow up to be great adults, but they are children. I'm OK with a Troop telling Moms and Dads to teach their kids how to medicate themselves. If the Patrol Leader can keep a confidence, I'm OK with a Troop having the first check and balance be the youth member telling his PL what he's taken. If the PL cannot keep a confidence, then I'm not OK with him knowing. I'm really not OK with a Troop not having an adult check/balance that the youth member is indeed taking his medications. It's an Adult Association thing ...
  7. Remember that any adult nomination to the Order is not to be construed an honor. Instead, it's to be an objective assessment of the adults' potential contribution to the youth of the Troop and the Lodge by undertaking the Ordeal.
  8. As I understand membership (and this is not from any hard source...) She may be: - An Assistant Den Leader in Cub Scouting - An Assistant Cubmaster in Cub Scouting - An Assistant Scoutmaster in Boy Scouting - A Merit Badge Counselor in Boy Scouting She may not be: - A Program Officer (DL, CM, or SM) in Cub or Boy Scouting - A Member of Committee in any Scouting program - A Member of a District Committee, Commissioner's Service, Council Committee or Council Executive Board (except when her position ex officio places her there (VOA President and such) She is a YOUTH MEMBER for purposes of: - Membership in Venturing - Membership in the Order of the Arrow ... but, since she cannot attain the rank of First Class (she cannot participate as a youth member in Boy Scouting), she cannot stand for membership. Oh ... and even though YP trained, she needs an over-21 YP trained for purposes of YP support. Is that clear as mud? If so, you're doing better than I.
  9. It's their advancement, and their responsibility. If you're the Scoutmaster, you can ask a gentle question at a Scoutmaster's conference. If you're sitting a Board of Review, you can ask a gentle question there.
  10. If the SE and the Council President really want to thank the key trainers, do a steak BBQ at a local park. That form of thanks says a lot.
  11. Disregard my question... From the website: The centennial edition of the Boy Scout Handbook will soon be available, and with the new handbook come several rank requirement changes that will be in effect as of January 1, 2010. http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/BoyScouts/AdvancementandAwards/2010RankUpdates.aspx
  12. Want to bet there was a liability suit settlement somewhere?
  13. Have someone in the District I serve asking, and our DAC is on vacation. With the new Handbook on the street, has anyone seen or heard of a transition plan for those Scouts who are in progress... for instance, Star to Life? If you've got a source, other than "My DAC said...", please, can you point me to it? Thank you in advance, and YIS
  14. Yeah, I think I'm going to take my place with emb and the Judge. Absent something from Texas, this is not worth taking any further.
  15. This is another time I agree with Kudu. The trench level of a Troop is the last place in the world for management by punchcards and chads. This is the kind of question best asked in the glow of a campfire on an autumn's eve, a cup of cocoa in hand, with God's own stars as a roof over your head. Ask two simple questions: - What isn't broke, so we're not going to fix it? - What needs improvement? Personally, I'd take the PLC out on a PLC retreat camp to ask this. The adults should be Mr SM, an ASM, and Mr CC.
  16. Source, please. Without a credible source, this is nothing other than trolling.
  17. OK, fellow Boomers, our generation needs to look at ourselves. We were the ones advocating free lust, free sex, and no consequences. We later boomers (55-64) were the ones who the newsies first called DINKs. We were the 20-somethings and 30-somethings who were ravaged with the first wave of AIDS. Our attitudes towards love influence how we act towards lust. When I was in my early 20s, it wasn't easy to find porn. Now, all I have to do is mis-type a url. I think the growth of all sexual perversion is a consequence of decisions we made 20 years ago. I agree with all the others: Eternal Vigilance, for the sake of the youth we serve.
  18. AFAIAC, Matthew 20:1-16 applies. If you do not like it, you're free to start "American Heritage Boys." As for me, I have limited amounts of emotional energy. This is something I cannot be an agent of change on, it's something I cannot even influence. There are other challenges far more important to me in Scouting: Are we getting Cubs in the door? Are we retaining them to join Boy Scouting? Are we using the Methods of our programs well? Are the youth who I can influence having FUN!!?? Are they growing up to be great young people, whom we'll all be proud of?
  19. IIRC Mr Mazzuca was a Council SE at the time, not one of the deputies. Jim Terry, Chief Eagle From the Sun in the Great Tribe of Mic-o-Say, VP and CFO of BSA, was the Mr Williams assistant on the short list. BTW, Jim was the man who had the vision to recapitalize Heart Of America Council's two Scout Reservations: Theodore Naish and H Roe Bartle. He is a program man. Finally, why are we even concerned about this. As I recall, there is a volunteer President of BSA; there is a BOD. They are the ones who decide the salaries.
  20. E hit an important point. Venturing is not necessarily a weekly thing. In town, in fact, I'd submit bi-weekly or monthly is better. Business session, get the coordination done for the next event, scatter. As far as the schools go, don't ask for lists from them. Hit their websites. Find out who the club sponsor teachers are. Invite them to friendly cups of coffee. The youth have email, twitter, their cell phones, skype, ichat, facebook... Trust me, they can and do communicate.
  21. Rick, We have a lake where we Camporee. By late October, no one is boating on the lake anymore. Shotgun is a non-problem, .22 short rifle cartridge is a non-problem. Black powder is a non-problem We shoot annually as part of Camporee.
  22. I'm from the 1965 edition, which was a minor update and recover of the 1959 edition. I see no problem with rank oriented skills. It worked 40 years ago. IIRC, back in 1964 or so, tying my tie was a WOLF REQIREMENT, not an elective. I kept that book for many years, until tying a tie became second nature.
  23. 1) Do an inventory. 2) Get with the area HSs. Look for outdoors based clubs. Promote the opportunity with their faculty sponsors. 3) Look at things automotive as well, including road rallies. 4) Look at going co-ed.
