  1. Sure is. No one says what the LCs are offering is what will be accepted. In addition several councils I know in their letters of intent to pay into the settlement specifically said it was conditioned on global settlement that includes them (obviously they are not paying if they are not covered). So mediation is totally relevant and the fact that LCs are saying “we will pay X” is not the last word in the subject.

  2. On Monday, September 20, the United Methodist Ad Hoc Committee on the BSA bankruptcy has stated that it will provide an update on the mediations that have been underway for months. The approximately dozen member committee is comprised of a team of legal advisors, representatives from the United Methodist Men’s group which oversees Scouting programs for the UMC and is headed by a bishop. Their goal has been to attempt to find a way forward that is fair to victims, protects the church and allows Scouting to continue as a ministry within the UMC. Members of the ad hoc committee have describ

  3. They would have a choice. They could chose to end (or not renew) the facilities use only.

  4. Yes, as soon as it was available. I posted somewhere earlier that before we condemn the D, E, & I training or the MB (whatever it ends up being called) we should spend a few minutes to do the training. I saw absolutely nothing in that presentation that I found objectionable.

  5. I have been hearing of councils that don't want to serve as the chartering org as well. That's something for BSA to resolve though in its reorg plan I would think.

  6. Do you not think if it was a positive situtation and they had an agreement the BSA would be yelling it from the tallest mountain? This announcement could set the tone for other CO's to follow. If it is not an agreement and settlement will others follow and drop scouting too?

  7. My council is similar: we have gotten no word in recharter while our next door neighbor councils are. I was told part is that the new internet rechartering system and getting folks setup is slowing things down as well.

  8. An interesting twist to all of this is that some local councils are sending a message to national BSA that they do not have the manpower to adequately supervise local units under a facility model chartering plan. This is compounded with significant membership drops in many councils due to the pandemic and other factors. Several councils are not filling current vacancies or are laying off staff. Another interesting piece is that several councils are apparently planning on delaying the start of annual re-chartering as long as possible. They are awaiting more information and a clearer pict

  9. Be careful of observer bias here. In our area, the part of the community that doesn't want to wear masks or vaccinate are certainly more vocal. The part of the community that don't want to be around those who don't wear masks or vaccinate is at least equally sizable but will just won't turn up and not say anything. I tend to agree that at the Scouting level we should align with governmental national and local guidance, neither adding nor subtracting anything. Certainly at the Troop level. Even with that I received a lovely nastygram from a parent when I passed on requirements

  10. I expect that the statement will be released via multiple routes. The Facebook page for United Methodist Scouting would be a prime source. Also, I would monitor https://methodistscouter.org/ This announcement will go to the local conferences who will then communicate directly with local congregations who have been told to expect further information and direction. It is worth noting the most recent posting: We cannot tell what the future will hold exactly. We do know there will be The United Methodist Church and there will be a Boy Scouts of America after the bankruptcy.

  11. You've convinced me. I was thinking the same way, but the fact that my home Troop has always been at the UMC for the last coming up on 70 years with no discernable problems kept me thinking ?"new CO."

  12. I have lots of CO / unit leader related questions ... Questions triggered by our own scouting unit. We cleaned up files no one wanted to store in their own garage. We were chatting about unit history. ... etc ... QUESTION #1 ... Establishing CO liability ... This seems like it will not be easy at all for probably up to half the units? Does that sound right? Our unit doesn't have any reported cases from any time ... I believe. ... but if it did ... Reason #1 Lack of historical CO knowledge ... A few of our leaders know our unit had multiple COs. Last 20

  13. A question for our legal team. There have been multiple local news reports of their councils financial contributions to the settlement. The articles are all similarly phrased with a finality tone as to the amount they will contribute. I can appreciate the Debtor trying to push "a final offer" but with Chapter 11 mediation ongoing is this permissible? https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/2021/09/17/boy-scouts-settlement-2021-mid-iowa-council-pay-victims-child-sex-abuse/8377326002/ https://www.spokesman.com/stories/2021/sep/16/inland-boy-scouts-council-contributes-to-national

  14. Some of you may have heard the sound of a thunk this morning. It was probably the noise made by moderators as a couple of us worked diligently to ... moderate. All of the moderators attempt to watch the postings as often as we can to keep this forum functioning with appropriate and useful content. I am surprised how often I see a moderator checking the forum at 2am. Maybe it says something about our insomnia. Unfortunately, we are needing to delete or hide some of the posts. Bottom line they are just not Scout-like. We know that there is a lot of passion around some of the topics. An

  16. Your posts are so well written, it puts the rest of us to shame. Since a scout is kind, It would appear that the moderators have graciously consented to remove some of your better written posts in order to save the rest of us from the pain and humiliation that any comparisons of your posts with the posts of other members of the forum would surely cause. On behalf of myself and other members of the forum, we hope you understand.

  17. Ahhh...I see where the confusion lies... Commas matter! The requirement, as written in the 2020 Scouts BSA Requirements book (the source document) says for requirement 2a: "Cycling merit badge or Ranger Cycling/Mountain Biking elective and 100 miles of cycling" Grammatically speaking, this should be separated into two options, A. Cycling merit badge OR B. Ranger Cycling/Mountain Biking elective and 100 miles of cycling This is exactly the way this is parsed out in Scoutbook, if you can look there and see it under any Scout in their awards section.

  18. Update 9/17/2021: "On Thursday, Judge James Isaacson sentenced Stender to three years in prison and three years of extended supervision after a three hour hearing in Chippewa County court. Stender had previously been found guilty for harboring and aiding a felon for helping Treu hide the truck on the day of the crash." "Authorities say the crash happened while both men were high after huffing aerosol inhalants they had purchased at Walmart. They drove into the girl scout troop, hid the truck and carried on with their day. In handing down his sentencing, Judge James Isaacson said
