  2. Officially....no. But personally I have seen them on the shirt collar flaps and never said a word. Seems perfectly acceptable to me.

  3. On behalf of National Council, I'm aghast that scouts and scouters would think it okay to point firearm shaped objects (FSOs) at human shaped objects (HSOs).

  4. I've always worn my Eagle Dad (and Eagle Mentor) pins on my uniform. I don't care about the regulations, it just seems like the right thing to do. That said, in Cub Scouts, the Cub leaders all had leather name badges, and we would put our sons' pins on it. https://www.scoutshop.org/leather-name-tag-kit-17451.html

  5. Actually, parent pins shouldn't be worn on the uniform, and there's really nothing to be gained by doing so. Let your child represent him- or herself in the youth uniform. You best represent the Scouts by being properly uniformed yourself, and part of that means remembering that parents' pins are meant for non-uniform wear. Nowadays, there are nice parent ribbons available at the Scout Store on the which you may place your pins, but again, those are not to wear on the uniform. In our troop, when we present our parent pins we remind them that while they are lovely reminders of their child's acc

  6. I've played with it a few times. If I need (or have time for) a better whipping than a common whipping, I prefer going straight to a sailmaker's whipping (ABoK 3446 for you knot nerds). There's a lot more friction holding the whipping on.

  7. That's what I was getting at but I wasn't clear enough. The skills are the same but the process is changing. They are also managing budgets by Venmo instead of cash. I don't think it matters how they do it as long as they do their best to do it on their own and do it safely.

  8. 🙂 Youch! That would be a painful mistake! A few of the funny grubmaster faux pas that I've witnessed include.... * Grubmaster planned a pork chop dinner for his patrol of 7 scouts. Dinner time came and ...ooops! .... looks like there's only 6 pork chops in the package! How did the scouts solve their problem? Well, there's 7 scouts and only 6 pork chops, so obviously, only 6 scouts would eat pork chops. Later, the Scoutmaster found out, and the patrol had a "Scoutmaster conference" about fairness and problem solving... * Grubmaster planned to serve hamburgers for dinner

  10. First @rickmay, congratulations to your daughter! By now you know that rank advancement ain't easy. It takes a good bit of dedication on the part of your daughter, her patrol, and her troop. I accept a few dings on inspection and wear an Eagle parent pin and/or mentor pin on the collar of each of my uniforms. So my saying you can't wear a parent 2nd class pin would be akin to throwing stones from a glass house! But, something to think about: everybody in the troop already knows your proud of your kid. What about the folks at church, work, the gym, the bar? Folks made those pins for y

  12. If there is an increase in the amount or number of National fee(s), I hope it is placated by a reduction in paperwork and "guidelines"... some good with the bad. My $0.02, and Alex I'll take Water Pistols for $10, no make that Power Tools for $20.

  13. Grubmaster is a developing skills job. Budget, quality, taste, and so on. The position shouldn't be shoved from one scout to the next. A couple of helpers makes the responsibility more fun. If the GM gets the money up front, then mom doesn't need to worry about it and can relax in the car while the scouts purchase their food. If the local supermarket is close, she doesn't even need to drive. There is a typical cost per scout that usually works out most of the time. It was $10 fifteen years ago, probably closer to $13 or $14 now. Scouts get good at it. If the adults start dreading pa

  14. Our troop does it this way. Grubmaster for patrol is selected at meeting before campout. They work out the menu. He knows then what to buy. Mom of Grubmaster takes Scout to store and loads up grocery cart, incurring an $80 grocery bill. Mom turns the receipt into the treasurer, with list of scouts in the patrol who partook of the meals prepared with ingredients bought so that their accounts can be debited this amount/and if negative, their parents can get a statement showing how much they owe. Mom gets either a credit to the scout's account or a check back. Generally, sh

  17. Sorry to be late to this. Kids with severe issues, zero control, and lack of partental discipline is not the norm at all. Yeah, as others have said - that's a more challenging age range in general. But, what you describe is unusual - at least in my area. I'd look at other packs before I gave up on Cub Scouts. I'd encourage you to ask around your sons friend circle and see if anyone is in Scouts. There's a decent chance there are some and they might be in a pack nearby. It definitely good for your son to Scout with friends. If that doesn't work, I'd call up the local District Ex
