  1. I read someones comment that they brought a magnifying glass and said, yeah I do too, it's part of my compass, oooo nevermind lol I have always worn glasses so "last years model" ends up in back packs, glove compartments, my wifes purse...easier and prolly cheaper then getting a "large print" compass That said why not consider a GPS with adjustable text size? Not old school orienteering, but then who likes being old?
  2. If you cannot find someone who attended NEI why not donate one to the Patch Archive the OA had on display at Jamboree! If your interested I can ask our Lodge Chief for the information. Adam
  3. Eagle92 said "have they fixed teh trained patch on the female CS leader yet? They had teh tan and green one showing. " yeah it is red now, but since nobody has stirred the pot today, didn't the insignia guide at one point show ALL leaders in the "centennial" unifrom shirt as wearing green numerals & trained patches
  4. Wolf & Bear should be a single course as the program really is identical. I wonder if they simply broke it up to lead you back for a refresher. The reality is the online classes are considerably shorter then their instructor-led counterparts so maybe this was intentional. As much as Tiger has gotten "in line" with the other age levels, it is still very different. Tigers MUST have their adult partner present at all times, Wolf & Bear Cubs, not so...
  5. In our Pack it is a non-isse because we include it in our annual dues. That was how it was before I got here, no one has complained and I suppose if they had a problem we would simply unsubscribe them... But I can remember when I was a boy waiting (very impatiently) for the next issue to arrive, my sons seem to have the same interest in Boys Life (despite it having far less interesting advertisements in the back. I never did build a hovercraft with mom's vacuum nor did I get my x-ray glasses, but I sure did dream about it.
  6. As a District Training Chairman I LOVE the online position speciofic training for a number of reasons. 1. Making it convenient means people who would not have bothered at all get some training! 2. I already have had one leader tell me they have taken the same course a couple times because they have learned more the second time. Repeat training for a quick refresh is going to add great value (to both in person and online students) 3. The training is delivered consistently, every time, to every student. No deviations. No war stories. 4. The training record get in the database
  7. BadenP - I EXPECT that they SHOULD know what is going on. And here is where you know I am crazy, I also expect that they should be communicating this type of info freely and regularly to ALL leaders, volunteers included! BUT last week Mr. Shephards Administrative Assistant pointed me to Ms. Lacobee of Training, who explained to me thay had changed vendors for this training program and they have been VERY upset with how this has been handled, but I should expect to see something online by Friday (or they were termnating the contract with that vendor). Fridays here, and I see a link for Lea
  8. I did not have a chance to check yesterday, but looks like Leader Position specific is not online yet
  9. During my councils "Tradeshow of Scouting" in early June we had Donald D. Shephard, Jr., from National present about Cub Scouts 2010 and he had said June 20th was the date for Online Leader Specific training. When that slipped I was not overly surprised because Jamboree was looming in the not to distant future. Jamboree is over so I figured I would give a call down to his office and see what was going on, he was out of the office, but a woman named Angela answered and kindly told me they expect it to be online this coming Monday, the 16th of August! Just in time for the influx of all
  10. The visitors section could use a useful address or directions... I came down to visit from NJ yesterday and that page was far less useful then the Docent at one of the museums in downtown Fredricksburg, VA Otherwise the site is great!
  11. Patriots Path Council still runs a Cub camp out of Watchung (I went ot both Watchung AND Wheeler as a cub) So the council still uses the property but has offloaded the maintenance costs. Not a bad deal!
  12. Thanks Eagle92 I was BSA lifeguard back when I worked at Camp Frenche and all my friends who worked at the pools in town over the summer were amazed that I was taught to handle boating and lakes and everything. If they are not going to differentiate it why bother offering their own program any longer? Seems like a waste of resources when they could just use ARC, whats next BSA CPR certifications? Without the "natural water" and boating and stronger skills they require how does it support the Scouting Program? I am really bummed to hear about this
  13. I see several people posting that BSA Lifeguard is the same as ARC Lifeguard. I don't know much about the other certs but what stood out in the past was BSA lifeguard seemed to be the only one that addressed row boats and canoes, is that still the case? If it really offers nothing different then a more universal certification what makes the BSA lifeguard worth pursuing? Thanks, Adam
  14. I think you answered your own question, lead by example! It's not just a matter of uniform. A Hat is a safety precaution, it protects from the sun and rain, and it help keeps your head warm. A Hat, as you stated, is a quick differentiator of your cubs (and their leaders) A Hat, is good advertisment, you wear your hat, the boys wear theirs, some start wearing their hats outside of meetings and bam MORE CUBS!
  15. are those snaps in place of buttons?
  16. Ask them who they want serving their food, someone clean and groomed or disheveld and unkempt... They will understand what people see when they see a wrinkled, untucked, jeans wearing scout. Respect needs to start with themselves and with their fellow scouts and it will only grow from there! Towards other people, towards their belongings...
  17. Mt. Allamuchy Scout Reservation Staff patch - made friends with people I still hang out with 20 years later, learned important things about camping, friendship and leadership. I got to help people learn to swim (WATERFRONT FOR THE WIN!!!) and now my sons camp there
  18. Creases may not be required but... Isn't anyone else disgusted with how most kids dress, the complete lake of personal pride & self esteem. mbrown is showing some initiative in looking his best, I think that is absolutely commendable! Like Scoutfish, I did quick job with a cool iron. It does not "finish" as smooth as cotton or other cloths but it comes out presentable. That said, I probably will not wear a supplex uniform to a Court of Honor, the boys work hard on their rank and awards, the lest I could do is look sharp and be squared away. dg - no creases aren't required, (
  19. I have heard of similar rules. A good friend of mine since we were camp staff 20+ years ago wanted to be a leader for his daughters Girl Scout unit and they told him "women only" This was Northern NJ in the past 2 years or so...
  20. Eagle92 said "Good news is that #1 you are not alone in wearing the wrong colors #2 national did say at one time that CS leaders Could wear the tan and greens, got a copy of that pdf somewhere plus that is what they told every one for 9 mopnths ( also got the pdf with national saying the CS leaders would wear red on tan numbers, but htta is a different story), and #3 national did say that elements of the ODL uniform are interchangable with the CUs, so Scouts and Boy Scout Leaders could still wear red numbers and loops on the CUs " well now I know why both stores told me that, I guess thi
  21. Same storey from my councils scout shop AND from the National Scout shop one council over. Color of the num, erals and trained strip depends on the shirt worn not the type of unit... epaulets denote your unit type not patch colors... And every person in both shops agreed. I'll trust the folks in gold epaulets that I spoke to in person!
  22. Does that mean he can have 6 required and 6 optional merit badges on his sleeve? I really which they were not so ambiguous... I believe the intent is 6 in total, but why would they seperate it unless they meant to allow 6 of each?
  23. Moosetracker - Our IOLS class is still a 3 day weekend, your council really delivers it in one day? In fact we have a council created class called Woodsman's Thong also a weekend long class because we had such demand for advanced outdoor training from the leaders. I am also confused with EDGE replacing the Patrol Method. BP said "The Patrol is the unit of Scouting always, whether for work or for play, for discipline or for duty. An invaluable step in character training is to put responsibility on to the individual. This is immediately gained in appointing a Patrol Leader to responsi
  24. Why not have your local Civilian Air Patrol sponsor a Post or a Crew?
  25. I forgot to mention the training is at http://olc.scouting.org the fast starts have been updated but the Leader specific Basic Training is not yet online, I heard June 20th as the date for that. And yes I agree with someones earlier comment about online training being initiated by National for a "numbers" reason, BUT I will do everything I can to ensure this actually does turn out better for us in the long run. But I also think it is important to note that the times are changing, this training will probably be a good fit for the generation it targets. And the imaginings that out
