  1. "Skip" is a Lawyer so no surprise that he worried about the letter of the law and not the fact that the troop was operating better then most (at least from the article) and that She was in a relationship with the same woman for NINETEEN years, which really is strinking since not 10 minutes before I read this I read an article on CNN about elevated divorce rates in the bible belt... "Skip"'s linken profile http://www.linkedin.com/pub/james-j-%22skip%22-inabinett-jr/30/ba8/980 CNN article on Bible belt divorces http://www.cnn.com/2011/LIVING/08/25/divorce.bible.belt/index.html?h
  2. AllFansome, those are cool but not the compression/wicking underwear we were talking about
  3. Funny you mention this Scoutfish, I discovered the Starter drawers (also at Wal-Mart) recently myself and was intrigued because they were half the price of Under Armor & the other brands, even REI's house brand... They work great! The odd thing I cannot find them on neither Starer or Wal-Marts Website.
  4. I am guessing the reason BSA is taking this position is threefold: 1. Marijuana remains illegal on the federal level, federal law trumps all others! 1a. None of the states or cities which have legalized marijuana have a common standard. 2. As it does not exist in the United States Pharmacopeia There is no published standard of dosage. 3. Unlike other drugs or methods of delivery it is easy to get "second hand medicated" I would also guess that the close relationship BSA has with the larger Christian establishments also does not predispose them to being friendly to Marijuana.
  5. The relevant section... http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/HealthandSafety/GSS/gss04.aspx#d
  6. Guys this is a non issue - BSA does not allow Marijuana at all wether prescription or not. The current Guide to Safe Scouting states: "It is unacceptable for anyone to use or be under the influence of medical marijuana at or during any Scouting activity." Makes it pretty clear...
  7. Reach out to the National Scouting Museum and if they don't want it ask them to put you in touch with the people who run the patch collection that the OA hosted at the 2010 Jamboree. And if they don't want it maybe your state has a Scouting museum like we do in NJ http://njsm.squarespace.com/
  8. Welcome, leading your son is going to be as much fun as it was to be a scout when you were a boy! FIRST - GET a Tiger book Read through it and see what your gettin yourself into! SECOND - Get Trained You must have Youth Protection training just to be able to submit your application to be a leader, and you probably took it online at https://myscouting.scouting.org You can take ALL of the Cub Scout Leader Basic Training online. Take it, don't be afraid to take it again and again. Taking the class in person has the benefit of you being able to ask someone with experience
  9. According to this Webelos and older can do outdoor cooking. http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/BoyScouts/Age-AppropriateGuidelines.aspx Bears and Wolfs are sepcifically required to do their cooking requirements with an adult. So I would imagine as long as they are supervised they can do anything (within reason) I imagine that the Wolf/Bear requiring Adult assistance means Webelos can cook on their own... ?? Adam

    Fake Uniform

I really do prefer my stuff made in america, but lets be honest. Are you only wearing shoes or boots made in america with your uniform? How about your tent... I look at it this way: 1. Scouting was founded in England 2. BSA is part of WOSM So, because we are a GLOBAL brotherhood, I have no problem WHERE it is made assuming 1. It is not made by the sweat of children or the exploit of any fellow human 2. It is made in a manner that impacts the environment as little as possible 3. it is of good quality for the price I pay Now, someone said "There could be many reasons,
  11. One easy and free way to avoif this exploit (and a considerable portion of adware is to use a hosts file that redirects most bad domains... http://someonewhocares.org/hosts/ check it out
  12. Wow, Moose, that's a shame... It seems like it just makes more work for you... We embraced the test out we have a few hundred leaders who have at least 10 years experience so it just makes sense to us to do this.
  13. Missed two huge points to put on the list 1. toilets - be it latrine, flush toilet, chemical toilets... People need to be prepared from ANY deviation, even if the only difference from the bathroom at hom is the bathroom is not heated about 50 degrees 2. drinking water - 1 galon per person per day Both are assumed by everyone to be ubiquitous, we know better!
  14. The test out option is approved by National as described here: http://www.scouting.org/Training/TrainingUpdates/Archives/201010.aspx Your council does not want to do the test out but will deviate from a sylabus in violation with BSA's published Trainers Code of Conduct "Trainers agree to present BSA material in accordance with the published policies, literature, and syllabi of the BSA. You have an obligation to present the material the way it was intended regardless of your personal opinions." http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/26-242.pdf the last page
  15. 8 Councils in NJ Driving across NJ takes about an hour on interstate 80 passing through three councils Driving north to South on the Parkway is about 4 hours not sure of how many councils you definitely pass through on this route. My council (Patriots' Path) is probably an hour and change end to end, but the north west portion of the state has fewer highways and lower limits... My District (Fishawack) is an odd shape so east to west in one area is maybe 10 minutes and 30 in another and north south 25 minutes to 30 is about right. 24 towns. http://en.wikiped
  16. Take the opportunity to educate, if he continues to be a problem the safety of eevryone else trumps him being on tips in my opinion... 1. Have him go to the local firehouse to learn the dangers of fires 2. Have him contact the forest fire service to come and do a presentation to your troop 3. Consider a tour of your regional burn center. If your in North Jersey, your welcome at my firehouse and I can put you in touch with the Forest Fire service and the burn center. I do not know of a video showing the rapid spread of wildland fire but here is a frightening video of how fast
  17. I received an envelope containing several copies of Scouting magazine. Odd, as I usually get one copy, but our district rechartes every March so maybe I got a copy for my pack, troop and district registrations... I read it tonight and found out why I was sent multiple copies. I had answered this post and Mary Jacobs used my storey as the opening to her article about Boys Life's Anniversary year. http://digital.scouting.org/scoutingmagazine/current/resources/index.htm it is on page 23. I am humbled, Thank you Mary! p.s. now you know my last name, if you can corrctly pr
  18. "Another interesting tidbit of information recently passed on to me is that the CSE and other key leaders at National have their uniforms custom made by an American tailor/manufacturer because the standard uniform at supply division, just doesn't fit right and is very uncomfortable." BadenP, any chance you got the name of the tailor? I wouldn't mind a uniform that fits across the shoulders correctly
  19. not sure if the "won't" was in regard to my post. But no, my scout shop absolutely does sell any rank except eagle without verification. They might ask for your advancement report , but if you tell them it is a replacement they have no problem. Most who work in the scout shops and understand how boys grow and how they are hard on their uniforms A replacement patch is especially obvious if you are buying a new shirt and everythign else all at once. A Scout is Trustworthy, remind your Scout shop of that if they give you a hard time (and have the number of your Unit Commisioner handy if they
  20. Not sure they would rpelace somethingthat suffered from normal usage and not a defect in it's creation... That said around here boys grow out of uniforms all the time, Our scout shop (with the Exception of Eagle) operates on the Premise that a scout is Trustworthy and will sell the badges.
  21. I saw an English version of the article (and of course cannot find the URL now) but it indicated they were Trans-Atlantic Council units. Makes allot of sense seeing as most of those scouts are sons of our service men & women. I will post the english URL as soon as I find it.
  22. Why not suggest to your scouts that they could invite another troop to send some boys to help guide them, or maybe the OA, or better stiill your NYLT staff, help get them organizaed and maybe see the value in beingtrained as well! Let them learn from boys who have done the job!
  23. Self Esteem does not come from "winning" it comes from earning. Rewarding anyone for something they did not earn sets them up for a harder failure later, disabilities or not... You mention a number of the pboys in this patrol have developmental issues, is this the case with all the Patrols? If so then what makes this one different? If not, then why not seperate the boys so they can interact with "average" boys? It sounds like the ASM in question may be the issue, why not switch the patrol they are assigned to?
  24. Thanks for sharing the update, Moosetracker!
