  1. Had to do this several years ago when our SM was out of state for more than a month. Confirmed it with council prior to signing.
  2. It is in my council, although there is no guarantee that either patches or t-shirts will be available for those doing late registration or walk in.
  3. I would not be surprised at all to see annual YPT come about as a part of the restructuring plan once the bankruptcy if finalized.
  4. May well be happening in a lot of areas. We are currently looking at any volunteer whose YPT expires prior to April 1, 2023 and working to get them renewed BEFORE recharter packets are turned in. We have been informed that the recharter will not be accepted if there is anyone who might expire before the charters are processed.
  5. According to the article in the Hawaii Tribune-Herald any potential charges look to be misdemeanors. I know that there are times when a RSO might show scouts guns that they would not actually fire on the range, just to make them familiar with them, but I am surprised that there would have been a loaded AK-47 present. Nothing that we have seen so far indicates whether this was under the supervision of a RSO or if the troop was doing this event on their own. As @Mrjeffstated, I am sure there was no ill intent here. That aside however, a child was killed and somewhere along the line something was done that did not comport with range safety procedures.
  6. The article is available to read by creating a free account. The bulk of the information concerns the family filing court papers for pretty much everything related to the investigation, in preparation for a wrongful death suit against the BSA, the Aloha Council, and "those who may be criminally charged". The police department has filed filed an objection to the subpoenas, due in part to the ongoing criminal investigation. There is a court hearing scheduled for Wednesday morning.
  7. The Explorer program is still alive. While not as large as it was when I took part in the late 60's/early 70's, and now is a part of BSA affiliate Learning for Life, it is still around and includes both Explorer Clubs (6 - 8 graders) and Posts (14 - 20 year olds). One of our council's police posts was involved at our 100th anniversary camporee recently. Exploring.org Also still a part of the program: Venturing | Boy Scouts of America (scouting.org) Just like the base Cub and Scouts BSA programs numbers are down across the country, but these programs are far from gone.
  8. @Armymutt You mention Tennessee. Would you by any chance have been at Boxwell for Wood Badge? If so, congratulations from a member of the Beaver Patrol, MT-14 (1972).
  9. So he did the spring course but not the fall course that concluded on the 18th, or last 3 courses including this fall? I am looking at the staff roster from the fall course right now.
  10. You never know! I am very active in my district, working with a Pack and Troop and as an Assistant District Commissioner. Also volunteer as a Day Camp Director and Cub Rangemaster, am very active in OA and spend a great deal of time at our council camp.
  11. If your choice is to move to another unit and you do not want to take on a leadership role with the new unit I would suggest contacting your District Commissioner. Pretty much every district could use more commissioners, and that would allow you to maintain active involvement with the OA. (although your BSA registration is still good for the remainder of the charter year - here in the CFC being Dec. 31)
  12. Not sure if it is being pushed more for the propective revenues or due to the fact that I was told by one of the higher up in my council that the bankruptcy court told BSA it cannot show negative balance for the event.
  13. We are looking at doing exactly this... We typically have up to 9 adults present, but only 1 is not either the SM or an ASM. Several have indicated that they are will in switch to committee at recharter.
  14. One of many question I would have based on this report would be whether the Aloha Council provided a NCAP trained and certified Range Master for the event, or did the troop reserve a site at the council camp and bring their own guns. I know that in the case of my council we can set up a shooting activity but only under the direction of trained and certified personnel, usually a member of the council shooting sport staff.
  15. I am lucky that I have our Cubmaster's (female CM) daughter, our treasurer's (female) son, and our Committee Chair's son all in my Bear Den. Always have 4 registered leaders present, two of whom are female.
  16. How long does the average council camp keep copies of summer camp records? Based on the OP's statement this took place the summer before COVID, so summer of 2019, more than 3 years ago.
  17. Proof read, proof read, and then proof read again!!! 😄
  18. If your council is anything like most, the Scout Shop is a National Council shop and probably struggling to find enough people to work. Our shop is also an hour drive from me, but everyone who works there is very friendly and I have never seen anyone not be able to be helped in a prompt timeframe.
  19. Hello neighbor! (sort of - same council, different district; we may even know each other if you are active in OA)
  20. Saw this on Thursday. Not much information released yet, although it appears that a spokesperson from national stated that there was an accidental discharge of a firearm. Child killed in shooting accident at Hawaii Boy Scout Camp | News, Sports, Jobs - Maui News
  21. The only person who can hold more than one REGISTERED position in a unit is the COR who can also serve as committee chair. SM/ASM cannot hold any other REGISTERED position. Many people consider things like secretary, treasurer, advancement chair to be registered positions -- they are not, they are functional roles. When chartering a committee has to have a Committee Chair and at least 21 Committee Members; what roles those committee members take on is of no concern outside the unit. I know of several ASMs who also handle advancement for their units as that is a functional role, not a registered position.
  22. I don't think it had anything to do with uniform issues, but on the day that I saw the scout the OP was upset with the event schedule included an ArrowPride luncheon. My thought when seeing him was that he would be taking part in that event. I did see members of his contingent several times during the week, as we were assigned to the same dining hall for meals. As far as I remember they were ALL in full uniform at dinner. I even ended up at the same table in the dining hall with that group for lunch midway through the week, and spoke with him briefly. No one in his group seemed to have any problem with him, so I saw no reason why I should. It made no sense for me to get upset with how someone I did not know and only spoke to once chose to dress, just like it made no sense for me to be upset with the countless people, youth and adults, who had position patches on their right sleeve instead of the left, or temp patches on their left pocket instead of rank. Far more important issues in the world and in scouting to worry about.
  23. Enjoyed reading the article, as this was my original council (15 years after the statue was dedicated).
  24. I have heard a bugler or three who could have been arrested for murdering musical notes!! 😋
  25. Based on his descriptions I would venture to say that VFC stands for Volunteer Fire Company.
