  1. Question for those who have been to Philmont- How hot does it get? Possible that if the heat is to extreme the drones can’t operate.
  2. Yeah, a 3million dollar compensated unpaid volunteer
  3. I’m sorry but, why would someone fake a article over the BOY SCOUTS? That would probably be their last choice.
  4. When I crossed over a few years ago, we had no OA come. Not a single one. I was a den chief for about two years and never saw any. If someone could describe what they contribute to the ceremony that would be great since I’ve never experienced it.
  5. Isn’t every new PL like that? Not my many 11 year olds wants responsibilities.
  6. I don’t think it would work out well for a small troop like ours. It would be 3 v 6, and 3 in the one Patrol are almost at Eagle.
  7. I’m aware. Atleast in my state, AOL is mostly being used.
  8. Agreed. And as said before, only a few actually pay attention and do all the requirements. Advancement is a issue in our troop as well. All they want to do is play games. The best way we have fixed it is the ASM (we only have one active one), and usually the SPL (me) or the Guide and we sit down one by one with the scouts who have their books. If they don’t have their books, then it’s their missed opportunity. Anyway, we basically guide them along. If needed, we teach them requirement(s) and then they come back after practicing, demonstrate the skills (orally or physically), and then
  9. True, but you sort of need to enjoy your surroundings and living conditions to enjoy what you are volunteering to do.
  10. Some are more street smart than book smart. Scouting requires street smart (a little book smart), while school requires you to be book smart. No reason why someone can not excel in scouting but not school. If their parents don’t think they should advance because of that, then it’s the parents choice and opinion.
  11. My apologizes. Anyway, I personally don’t believe you can “make” someone outdoorsy. Either they are scared of bugs or they’re not. Either they are scared of sleeping in a tent or they’re not. Either they can survive outside without flushing toilets or they can not. Honestly depends on how they were raised and experiences.
  12. Is there no AOL (or Webelo 2s) in an LDS Pack?
  13. I'm glad I don't have this problem in my troop. We have just enough volunteers, and even some parents that will go camping if they need too. Only issue with us is that some parents only speak spanish. Anyway, I personally believe that having a "Parent Camp Out" without any scouts at your CO (if they have a picnic area, grove, etc.) and get them familiar with everything, mostly camping. Maybe some want to get involved but are afraid too. I personally would give them a position (committee, advancement chair, etc) so they feel important and may be more inclined to go camping and attend more
  14. I’ve never put two and two together when the names were changed. That’s a good observation. I had to put effort into my AOL, (4 years ago???) while it was still called Webelo 2s. I like AOL better as a name, but it does degrade the AOL award.
  15. Interesting. As a youth, we always consider free leaders. Why make them pay when they give so much? Most volunteers pay their own dues (45?), and all that when that’s expensive enough. My Troop doesn’t reimburse for gas, but we really should. Our SM refuses to be reimbursed because he doesn’t mind paying.
  16. Your summer camp(s) that you attend don’t allow two free leaders for x amount of scouts? I know if atleast 15 summer camps that I’ve looked into around a few states allow two free leaders then around $120+ for extra.
  17. Personally, as a current youth, don’t believe that I would learn communication skills by earning 8-10 of 21 merit badges for eagle from people I know. Yes it’s done outside a meeting, but it’s with a familiar face.
  18. I would contact your council, as councils may vary and may do case by case. (My assumption, there might be something National has set.)
  19. We tried doing 3 merit badges within a year for one year. Then we never did it again.
  20. I agree as well. Others may had of pictured it as he moved right next to scout bunks.
  21. I'm aware that BSA doesn't allow youth to work with tools. I was just shocked that GSA allows it. I have already finished my Eagle project.
  22. Haha. Those type of parents will get their child(ren) no place in life.
  23. Apologies for the title, I summed it up. I didn’t mean to convey it like this, but I mean’t those who earn eagle but dont use the knowledge they learned (didn’t practice, pay attention...) or had to learn again.
  24. It could’ve been that the producers or writers want them to act like they know nothing which leads them to “mock” BSA.
