    Atheism

Great scientists: "I believe in Spinoza's God, Who reveals Himself in the lawful harmony of the world, not in a God Who concerns Himself with the fate and the doings of mankind." "I'm not an atheist and I don't think I can call myself a pantheist. We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many different languages. The child knows someone must have written those books. It does not know how. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangement of the books but doesn't know what it is. That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God". "God does not throw dice". = Albert Einstein= und so wiess
  2. Dang! I thought this was about stove fuel... " I love cooking with wine, sometimes I even put it in the food" ((attrib. to W.C.Fields)) I would eschew the wine. If, without it, the recipe is not well received, add catsup to it, the boys will understand... ;-)(This message has been edited by SSScout)
  3. Congratulations. I'm sure you will long remember the WB experience. And the ..."White Envelope"... 1) I hope you asked the DE about this. Did he know what was in the envelope or was he merely delivering for someone else? 2) In Our Council/District: When the final ticket is accepted, the WBer tells his Troop Guide how he/she wants his/her beads delivered. Ceremony? Where, when, how extravagant? And the TG and WB CD/SM comes and presents the WBer with the beads, necker, woggle, etc. No ceremony desired? Then what? Mail? Hand off at Roundtable? I had my beading done at my home Troop CoH and invited my WB patrol and many other Scout friends to witness. It was, therefore, not only a culmination for me, but an education for many others who did not know of WB. 3) I hope you will contact your WB CD/SM and TG and find out what happened. If the white envelope was your "beading", then you were really short changed. I find it hard to believe that the WB PTB would allow such to happen, knowing the dedication evident in my WB experience. I have to agree with emb021 and wonder who you might have annoyed... 4) Was the DE associated with your WB course? Did he/she attend too? 5) I hope you will politely pursue this and allow yourself the ceremonial recognition you deserve. YiS
  4. Awright! Back in Scouter! I was in withdrawal without my Scouter fix until just now! From friday night til now, everytime I clicked "Scouter", I got the above message. Moderators: what news? Beavah: I pm'ed twice, but no reply. Didst receive?
  5. "A troll is a member of a fearsome humanoid race from Scandinavian folklore, and its predecessor Norse mythology, as in "The Three Billy Goats Gruff [1] (http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/billygoats/)," the well-known Scandinavian folk tale in which a troll living under a bridge torments some billy goats that want to cross. Grendel in the poem Beowulf is a closely similar creature. The word "Troll" is possibly derived from an old norse word meaning magic, cf. Swedish "Trolla", Danish "Trylle" (Perform magic tricks)." "In Swedish children's literature, trolls are not naturally evil, but primitive and misunderstood. Their misdeeds are due to a combination of basic and common human traits, such as envy, pride, greed, navet, ignorance and stupidity." "There is a theory that the trolls are a distant memory of modern man's encounter with Neanderthals. Some also claim that the Neanderthals may well have lived into historical times, and may be remembered as trolls." == on line Dictionary== Troll on, you wide Missouri, troll on !

  7. Dan K has it succinctly about the Religious Award. I would like to point out that when the Bears have their Bear Badge, that should not be a sign to sit down and take Cub nap. There are lots of Arrow Points to earn and places to go and(I hope) lots of stuff to do, Den wise, Pack wise and District and Council wise! Keep them Bears (and Tigers and Wolves) hopping!
  8. In MD, I can vouch for Little Bennett, very Scout friendly, and have visited Cunningham Falls and Cedar Creek. They tend to be crowded early. Ask the Rangers for the least crowded weekends at any State Park. Washington Monument is pretty and more rugged, and right on the AT. Might not be as popular with the public. Go there in person to scout out the facilities if at all possible. And, don't forget CWBSnyder, the Council camp.
  9. The "minimum" is ONE BSA trained and certified (card is up to date) Range Safety Officer on site during range open hours. That's one Archery on the Archery Range, and one BB Shooting Sports on the BB Range. No RSO, no open range. THEREFORE, it is a good thing to have more than one BSA RSO available for potty breaks, reporting to Admin, etc. Get lots of Boy Scout assistants, many worthy adult assistants, who your Chief RSO trains to his satisfaction. BUT,,, no RSO , no open range. Assts. don't fill the bill for BSA purposes. When they take their RSO Training, they should be given the following, updated as appropriate: ■Shooting Sports for Cub Scouting, No. 13-550 In PDF: http://www.stlbsa.org/NR/rdonlyres/42BDA04E-AE7A-40EC-832B-3CB4B7C68E15/0/CubScoutShootingSportsbook.pdf ...among some other places. Your RSOs should take their role very seriously, but still allowing the Cubs to have fun and take pride in a new skill well learned. The discipline of the range allows all to become skillful archers/gunners SAFELY.
  10. My father lost his left arm in an accident long before he even met my mom, so I only knew him with his one, strong right arm. He taught me many things; among them, how to tie my shoes. One handed. Try it some time.

  12. What he said. Anything but "visitor". Thank you for the clarification.
  13. It was not an emergency. There were no lives saved. There was no rubble to clear away. This was planned (?weeks? months?) ahead. The tents/ cabins/cots would have been empty otherwise. The city saw the conference as good PR, economy raising for the caterers and hospitality folks involved. A "good faith" donation. Accept the money and buy a new sewage pump for Heritage. Repaint the Ranger's house.
  14. I promise to be more specific in the near future. However, I have been made aware of a situation and would welcome PMs from folks that have experienced any problems in registering to attend the 2010 Jamboree, either as Staff or as an Attender.
  15. In order to use Coleman Mantles, do you need Coleman Fireplaces? (TeeHeeHee...) or... Is Coleman related to Mickey? Seriously tho, why are they called "mantle"?? Anyone know?
  16. Polyurathane. Light spray coat. Let me know how it works out, I did it with a wool ball cap once with mixed results. A stiff wool hat should do well.
  17. "504 Gateway Failure" with a short letter/number list, several everytime til now. Good to be home.
  18. multiple entries (This message has been edited by SSScout)
  19. Blood Drives? Fund raising for the attainment of the project? There are small, meaningful projects and there are large meaningful projects. Finding the site, obtaining the cooperation of the town, finding a sculptor/architect/builder willing to work cheap, Scouts doing landscaping (?maybe?), charretting the design. I have a hard time with the big list of contributors. Give more, get a bigger mention? http://www.strengthforservice.org/index.php?p=About+the+Compiler is a notable project that (1)didn't build anything or clear any trails and (2) needed fundraising and (3) may/maynot "benefit Scouting", but it sure has "Scouting" all over it.

  21. "The work is done by whoever shows up." After reading the thread above, here is my observation/interpretation: 1) The COR is selected by the CO, thru the IH. 2) The COR serves as the representative of the charter organization to the Scout District AND the Scout Council. He/she must be a "member" of those ruling boards, otherwise she/he would not have a vote on them. 2A) This does not mean the COR is a member of the Executive Board, however that may be constituted. But they might. See the above slogan. 3) To see the effect of the attendance or absence of the COR at those meetings, I refer you to the drama of Chicago Area Council and Camp Owasippee (sp?), detailed in these pages, a few years ago. 4) The COR is not, strictly speaking, a "unit" leader. But they could wear other sleeve dots at other times. He/she would appear to be a CO leader, and as such, should be eager to be involved in the life of the CO and the Scout Units it sponsors. We all know of "hands off" COs; we all know the problems this creates and we all know that Scout Unit is richly blessed that has folks that sign their names to the Charter papers and then take their assumed and assigned roles seriously. 5) It matters not whether one wears a Scout uniform; but what one does for or against Scouting. "Show me what a man does with his hands that I might know his heart" (Amish slogan). 5) HOW do we get our CORs to take their roles seriously? I have no idea how many COs the NCAC has, but there are no fewer than 80 COs in my home District and there are 20 Districts in the NCAC. I know for a fact that my home COR is NEVER notified about any Council meetings, tho he is on the listserve. Only once a year? How is a person supposed to react? 6) If the Council is corporately made up of it's COs, and the CORs are the voting members of the Council, and only a handfull of CORs show up at any meeting (District or Council), what else can we expect but that the decisions made will be limited by the imagination (or avarice or ego or...) of those in attendance? We always hope and pray that the Scout ideals held by the folks that do the jobs are the same as the Scout ideals we ourselves hold. Sometimes, they are not, sad to say, as witness many of the folks that write here seeking advice and sympathy for their particular problem. I would hope that we can encourage our CORs to "show up" and therefore do the work.
  22. Whatta Eagle project! It's in Utah! http://www.roadsideamerica.com/blog/100-years-1-big-boy-scout/ And the real deal from the Davis County Clipper: http://www.clippertoday.com/view/full_story/5783366/article-Scout-project-monument-to-be-set-in-place-Monday? I've got almost 5 feet of snow in my back yard!
  23. " In democracy, it's your vote that counts. In feudalism, it's the Count that votes." ==Mogens Jallberg== Methinks the PC had best regain it's authority or declare it lost.
  24. We would get a dad to cut some "cookies" from a log, sand the disk smooth, and woodburn the names, etc. into the disk, a coat of poly, then attach a short arrow and/or a big AoL Web patch (available at Scoutshop) to it. Made a handsome award, we thought. Woodburning set available at local hobby shop or WMart or Sears... No need for brass engraving, mail waiting, more close to home... Congrats to your Webelos.
